People set their expectations too high.
The source material was always a goofy, absurd, damn-near-moronic amalgam of shounen cliches. The movie version likewise looks goofy, absurd, and damn-near-moronic. Seems like a success to me.
the movie doesn't look goofy or absurd
it looks like a regular old crappy action movie from the 90's or 80's
only much worse because it's operating under the name of a beloved (you cannot argue against that, look at what japan was like during year of the monkey) series
giving it a bad name to those who aren't familiar with it
while angering those who were fans by removing vital characters
(no krillin=no super saiyan)
completely changing the story
(goku in high school??)
and adding original, crappy characters when toriyama has already created an army of characters for the series
"i'm gonna remake the shining! but this time it's gonna be about ice hockey and lets get rid of that dorky little kid with all the fingers"
