7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x

My attempts:
1) 7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x
8(7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2) = 8 (3/4 + x)
7x + 2 + 4x = 6 + 8x
11x + 2 = 6 + 8x
11x + 2 - 2 = 6 - 2 + 8x
11x = 4 + 8x
11x = 4/11 + 8/11x
Ack! Stuck!

2) 7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x
7/8x + 1/2x - 1/4 = 3/4 + x
11/8x - 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 + 1/4 + x
11/8x = 4 + x
hmm.. tried continueing but no answer apeared.

The answer is: x = 8/3
It makes no sense to me. sad
I'm very lost, and I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Solve for x when:
7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x

First thing we want to keep in mind is that we want to combine like terms. So what we're going to do is subtract x from both sides and add 1/4 to both sides.

7/8x + 1/2x - x = 3/4 + 1/4

Simplify the stuff on the right.

7/8x + 1/2x - x = 4/4

Now we want ALL the terms to have the same denominator. We can do this by multiplying each term by 1. Remember that 1/1 = 2/2 = 4/4 8/8 = 1. You want to match the correct uh, "version" of 1 to the correct term so that the denominators will be the same all across the board - let's try for a denominator of 8.

(1/1)7/8x + (4/4)1/2x - (8/8placeholder)x = (2/2)4/4

So what we get is:

7/8x + 4/8x - 8/8x = 8/8

It's important to remember that you have not actually changed the equation, merely changed how it is expressed. (Translating "goodbye" in English to "sayonara" in Japanese if you will.)

Next we need to combine the x terms so they won't be messy.

7/8x + 4/8x - 8/8x = 3/8x
And all that is equal to 8/8.
So:

3/8x = 8/8

Now we need to get rid of those pesky fractions. This can work by multiplying both sides by the same number. (8/1 in this case.)

(8/1)3/8x = 8/8(8/1)

What this does is cause the denominators to cancel out.

3x = 8

Divide both sides by 3.

x = 8/3

Make sense?

7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x

My attempts:
1) 7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x
8(7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2) = 8 (3/4 + x)
7x + 2 + 4x = 6 + 8x
11x + 2 = 6 + 8x
11x + 2 - 2 = 6 - 2 + 8x
11x = 4 + 8x
11x = 4/11 + 8/11x 11x-8x=4 3x=4 x=4/3
Ack! Stuck!

2) 7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x
7/8x + 1/2x - 1/4 = 3/4 + x
11/8x - 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 + 1/4 + x
11/8x = 4 + x

But really you made it a bit more complex when you started multiplying additional stuff and I think it threw your answer off.

Start off with making everything the same base
7/8x - 1/4 + 1/2x = 3/4 + x = 7/8x - 1/4 + 4/8x = 3/4 + x
11/8x = 1 + x
11/8x - 8/8x = 1
3/8x = 1
x = 8/3

peekadoras answer is better though. I tend to skip steps.
