I am sure some of you have heard me refer to something called a character journal. This is a tool I created (though I am sure others have too) that can help you get deeper into your character's mindset. It can really help your character to grow and seem even more real!
Basically, the short of this is, a character journal is exactly what it sounds like. It is a journal that your character would keep, if they kept one. Now I don't write a journal myself, but I still think it is a good idea for a character to keep one.
When writing a character journal, the setup is up to you. Set it up however you want it to be, or how you character would. If you character is a preppy girl, she would probably throw pink and flowers all over the place. They would talk about boys and maybe have personal comments on some of the people that are with in the role play. Maybe they secretly love the rogueish boy that was sent to juvy two times. Maybe they really love that nerd they pick on all the time, but will never show it for popularity sake?
A magic user would probably keep track of how spells are cast, what new spells that they are thinking of, and maybe catalog events along the journy.
A healer might keep a dry sounding personal record of recent herbs they found and what illnesses they have treated. They might have some personal thoughts on life and death, and how to mend the next broken arm. They might be trying to mix a new curative to prevent infection.
Either way, you can find out a lot about you character by maintaining one of these. It also can help keep yourself and everyone else on the same page as to what happened and when, with a little personality thrown in. You don't need every detail that has happened, just what your character would mark down as important. Private thoughts and such are good for character development as well.

oh! i should totally try that. Usually i'm pretty good at mapping out my characters by acting as them(talking to self) before they ever hit page, but that's a really great idea for me to get my character outside myself.
by the way, talking to them(yourself) is an exelent way to get to know your characters. It especially helps when nobody's around.

*Cough* Crazy *cough*
Alright, not really. I usually play it all through my head... allot. I have the scenes run through my head of things that have happened, and possible things to come within the role play. I've been doing that with one character. Poor Kia. He has such strong personality, yet asks for so much trouble! He seems to just beg for it!
I find the journals can help me get into character, as well as can help me place their personal thoughts that just didn't make it into the role play. It can place the role play into your character's perspective, which can be interesting for other role players to see.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone but when I developed my current character, I'm using her in the guild that I will post below, I gave her a very detailed back story. That way when I write as her I can think back to her story and ask myself would she say or do this? Also I kind of created a special place for her in my head so i guess you could say that she kind of takes over when I write for her. Here is the url to the RP guild i am currently an active member in. ~ElvenFolk~
