I have heard this a lot, what are profiles and what are they good for?

Well, profiles are just records of your character, something to keep them based upon. It is like the skeletal structure of your body, it helps to hold your character up and keep them together as you play them.

One thing that people do think incorrectly about is a trouble spot for many people. Just because something is written in a profile does not mean that it is written in stone. Characters grow up, get older, learn and change. Just because your character has a deadly fear of heights written in their profile does not mean that they will always be hindered by this fear. They may at some point in their lives get over this fear, just to find a new one.
If your character gets seriously burned to the point that they laid near death for many days, they probably would become fearful of fire. Even if before they never feared fire, they would probably change.

The hardest part of a profile is learning where you can grow and when. A profile is just a reference of where they are. If you have a long term character in a long term role play, let them grow! Let your character develop that personality of theirs! They will experience things and learn. They will get wisdom and figure things out.

I would suggest updating a profile from time to time, but at the same time, I would never alter where your character has been in the past. Make a new addition to the old profile, or even make a new profile altogether. Mark the differences and changes and archive the old profile for your reference.

Now to approach another question I often hear: Why do I want to post this for my enemies to see? They will destroy me if they find out my weaknesses!

To cover this, if a player you are fighting against just seems to 'know' your weaknesses, they are god-modding and are not playing right. They are doing what is called meta-gaming, or playing with information their character has no right to know about. This problem should never happen, but I know it does from time to time.
Also, don't make characters that are like superman, with only a single weakness. If you say you can't be hurt by anything but this one item, even I would be throwing it your way on first contact. Why you might ask? Unless everyone else has characters made the same way, it is cheep and also god-modding. Then when you complain, I would just say I was defending myself against an over-powering foe that shouldn't have been there. (The most proper way to deal with this however would be to talk to either the moderator, or the person in charge of that role play. Get in contact with them. Let them know. Most people don't like over powered characters anyway, they tend to ruin good stories.)
(If all else, you can also contact the character's controller. They might have other unknown weaknesses not stated in their profiles, even though it should be. Maybe they are a true powerhouse character, yet constantly afraid of using their powers for fear of hurting others? Maybe it causes them pain to use their uber-powers? Maybe if they push themselves too long they will fall unconscious and be weak for anyone to attack them? You don't know untill you ask. Most of this information should be in the profile, but sometimes there just isn't enough room in that small profile area. Also, the leader of that role play should also be aware of these weaknesses as well.)

Last but not least with the profiles, there are other reasons for having them public. It works as a double checking system between you and other players. If you are open about your character, and suddenly start acting out of character, other players might notice and let you know. If they read your profile before hand, they can tell you that your not acting in profile, or you are using abilities and powers not stated in the profile. Sometimes you can get confused on your characters, or you just loose a character for a short time.
Profiles can help you stay within character. They can help you get into that character's thoughts and personality. If they are shy and timid, you are more likely to keep your character in that role if you write it down. Months from now, you might start becoming overly brash and bold, and someone might notice and let you know. Unless you character grew out of their shyness, they should start backing down once again and returning to normal.

Having the profiles open to all also helps you role play leader, as they can best come up with a story to challenge and help your character grow. They can also place your character into situations and events that will best match your skills, making an asset into the group, not a hindrance.
Also, sometimes, a character you make is just not appropriate for a role play. If the leader of the role play can see you character, they can probably tell you that right away.
It doesn't matter how well the character is made, if they use magic in a world that magic doesn't exist in, they wont work in that role play. The role play leader might want to add in magic to allow your character, or they might tell you magic isn't allowed. Either way, it gives them AND you the best chances to join into a role play and have the most fun out of it.
