i love halloween. who can resist begging for free candy, dressing up as someone other than yourself, and going to a good party? it's supposed to be a night of fun for children and adults alike. but for me, it's always been bittersweet. i feel like i come up with great costume ideas, but i've never been able to pull any of them off. always because my mother didn't agree with them. when i was younger, she refused to buy any costumes from the store, so every costume i had was hand-made.
and i most definitely could not dress as someone outside my race. once i begged her to go as rainbow brite (she was my idol), but i had to settle for indigo because she was the only black character. one year my cousin wanted to go as she-ra, so i decided to go as jem. my mom said i could go as jem's friend shayna (black character), while my cousin could still be she-ra because she was half-white. i always thought it was unfair that i could never dress how i wanted on the one night it was acceptable to look like a totally different person. and i think in some way it gave me some identity issues. the sad thing is that she still tries to stop me from choosing my own character!
have you ever been in a situation like this? and if you guys celebrate, who are you dressing as for halloween?

I think that perhaps your mother may have been trying to protect you from that "I wanna be white!" thing that befalls some little black children. At the same time, now that you're an adult (presumably), or at least old enough to make your own Halloween costume decisions, she should really understand that it's okay now. xd
With movies like "White Chicks" and characters like the one in "Tropic Thunder" ("I'm the dude playin' the dude disguised as another dude!"), these days more than ever adults should understand that it can be fun to dress up as something you're not for one day. That's what Halloween is all about! heart
I have noticed that with the popularity of Hanna Montana, the whole "you can't dress up as some race that you're not" thing has relaxed a little; I have seen children of all ethnicities dressed like her. xp

Passion_Dragon I think that perhaps your mother may have been trying to protect you from that "I wanna be white!" thing that befalls some little black children. nah, i still had my 'i wanna be white' moments. got hit in the back of the head for every one of them. xp Passion_Dragon I have noticed that with the popularity of Hanna Montana, the whole "you can't dress up as some race that you're not" thing has relaxed a little; I have seen children of all ethnicities dressed like her. xp really? hannah montana? really?? well it's good that people have relaxed about it, hopefully it'll make their kids a bit happier. but still, i wouldn't dress as hannah montana just out of good taste.
