Victorian Era is the norm with steampunk, I know, but I am in a Da Vincian mode and National Novel Writing Month is coming up in less than two weeks. (Oh my god is it that soon? I have so much to do and so little time!). Anyway, as it is a pretty fast thing - I pretty much base what I write on what I am 'feeling' around that time, and right now I am feeling Da Vinci and Nicolas Flamel with a nice taste of Machiavelli. Anyway, I have decided to do an Italian Renaissance story... steampunk!style. Talk about an anachronism, eh? Anyway, this is a quasi-fantasy, quasi-alt!history sci-fi kind of story; there is alchemy, there is technology beyond that of the Renaissance people (largely based off of Da Vinci's ideas and, of course, all steam & gear based), and there is a hint of religious overtones as well - as there are a few characters who follow Martin Luther's ideals in his daring escapade to break away from the oppressive Catholic Church. There shall be Shakespeare, Don Quixote, and other such fun things as well by the way.
Anyway, I am looking at 1605 or so; anybody know any good steampunk or similar genre stories that take place in the Renaissance, preferably the Italian one? I would like a point of reference and something to inspire me. Anything you know of would be lovely ^^ ~!

I was very skeptical when I read the title of the thread, but after reading your ideas they actually sound very interesting. Sadly I really can't think of anything in the 1600s.
What's odd though is that you made me think fo Merlin in Disney's "The Sword in the Stone" blaugh

Frankly, I think your best bet is to just improvise with what you do know.
If you were me, I'd make a lot of occult and paranormal things; i.e, that is in a sense what Nicholas Flamel was about. You can make allusions to magic, etc.

I do not know any steampunk renaissance stories. Heck, I barely even know many renaissance stories. Only one I can think of and that was "The Prince of Foxes".

He is best known for collecting books on alchemy, which though has some supernatural overtones, is largely a scientific endeavor with simply misguided principles.

The Sword and the Stone was pretty cool, but that's irrelevant. I am now juggling this with a Heian or Tokugawa Japanese steampunk idea; I always have this problem every year, although I suppose I'll eventually write both. Anyway, I think if I do the Renaissance story next month I will just base it off of what I know and Da Vinci's drawings; and if I do Japan... well, I took a semester in Japanese History, so I know quite a bit there - but they are both so tempting *le sigh*.
Anyway, thanks for the opinions. And if anybody finds anything of the Renaissance nature, let me know (and, for that matter, Heian or Tokugawa Japan, the latter is much more likely - but a Tale of Genji gone steampunk would be damn hot... oh, damn, I just got another idea, somebody hit me with a wrench).

Funny you should say NaNoWriMo...
Joining this guild has inspired me to make the capital city of the country in my novel a Steampunk'd city, including Victorian fashion styles. This makes Ci Ankar a strange construction in the midst of a primarily medieval world, but I'm enjoying it. My villain comes from there and my protagonist will go there at some point, and I'm pretty sure my narrator lives there to "this day" (this day as written by the narrator). And this is the first time in my (long) history of NaNo-writing attempts that I'm ahead!
Ohman, Ophiucha... Tale of Genji gone Steampunk is bada**. I want your brain if it always comes up with such awesome ideas. biggrin

Have you ever seen 'Hudson Hawk'? the story its self takes place in 1992, but rather the invention, Da Vinci's Gold machine is clockwork punk, but it works just the same
