So there was the New York Times, then the Wall Street journal. Of course wiki threw in it's six paragraphs too. Hell, it was prolly one of us that edited that in the first place. Also, who could forget (esp. since it was so recent!) that wonderful week long series from threadbangers? Here's when it really started to sink in for me though:

So fellow shipmates, what does everyone think? Would you appreciate a world where getting this look wasn't so damn expensive and time consuming? Would you miss the DIY creativeness, the uniqueness and the ENDLESS HOURS AT EVERY THRIFT STORE IN YOUR TOWN?!!! *pants* dramallama Whew, so, anyways, weigh in!

I would miss the DIY aspect. I think it's the one factor that still seperate steampunk culture from goth and emo and all that. To be steampunk you have to be at least somewhat creative, because you can't just walk to the nearest mall and buy a pair of ten dollar brass goggles with gears and a compass installed. Also if it went mainstream the importance of literature in the subculture would fade, and the general IQ of the people involved would drop a few notches.
In my opinion subcultures should remain small and underground, otherwise they lose that which makes them special. They become too easy, and too fleeting when everyone can access them intantaniously.

If goggles that cool were that cheap, I know personally I'd be snapping them up to cut them to bits and work into clothing. That said, as "punk" literature has declined into almost nothing and original "goth" works restricted to mediums such as morbidoutlook.com, I don't want to see that happen.

Another interesting point, that I gleaned from the IQ mention- does being interested in this genre come with a predisposition towards a higher intellect?

As one of the "outcasts" in high school and college, I feel rather gypped that it's becoming "popular" to do the very thing I was labeled an "outcast" for. Seriously, after enduring the teasing and labeling, now my tormentors can claim all my hard work for themselves as if they own it. Which they don't. They never will.

**GRRRRR**

I do enjoy some of the by-products, tho. Like more movies with the steam punk influences or more acceptance of Victorian style clothes in every-day wear. But it's just so frustrating when the popular crowd, who can't even think for themselves, plagiarize my ideas.

Maybe all the hard-core sub-culture founders should get together and create a bunk-fad so the popular culture can steal that and leave us alone. >_<

If steam went mainstream it would lose its edge. Like when i first cut off all my hair two years ago. it was liek "OMG! HER HAIR IS SHORT!" then... every one else cut theirs off and i no longer had that cool short factor.
So i dyed my hair a bright burgundy. now everyones hair is burgundy.

So the same would hapen to steam like it did the punk style in the 80's it will become popular then become just anouther trend/fad and everyone will be like " OMIGE! I so started steampunk!" la dah de dah.

and yes teh DIY creative coolness will be lost to all good steamy hell and you will see rows of cheaply priced goggles that will break in 6 wears. blouses and corsets that rip and tear. Top hats that flop over after one rain.

no more edge. no more diffrence. no more creativity.

I really hope steampunk will never get mainstream. even though I have to agree with ScarletFrost That having more steamy aspects in movies videogames etc is nice. And inspiring.
An I have to disagree with Ambrose Closer about steampunk being only for the higher intellect. Well actually not. It's like steampunkers have an other way of thinking, more creative, out of the box (i don't know what to call it) But after running it through my brass plated head a few more times I have to conclude it is most often people with a higher than average intellect. Maybe because average is actually really low and without creativity. You have to be smart and creative to step into a subculture that is all about unique personalities and DIY.
I hope never to find brass goggles or look-a-like steamy inventions on sale in the local mall.

I feel like steampunk is a a secret that we were just lucky enough to stumble upon. If it were mainstream, it wouldn't be special and "ours" anymore. It would be boring if every one walked around in steampunk. And I know there aren't rules to what is and isn't steampunk but the masses would butcher it. The mainstream does the opposite of what things call for. Like in Lolita, intead of it looking elegant, bandwagon followers turn it into frill-monster cosplay. So the equal opposite would be true of steampunk. The mainstream would put nonsensical rules to what they call steampunk and then our poor lil' style would be raped by words like "poser." People would be all elitists. Either DIYers would start thinking they were steamier, or people who could afford fancy brands would think they were. The comradery in steampunk would be gone.

(I could go on forever.)

Why are they playing Voltaire... stare

Edit: Oh God, why are they talking to Voltaire.

Edit Edit: Oh Good they interviewed a leather crafter who I know and think is a p***k... I also think he has a** implants.
