"What are indigo girls?" Akuti laughed at the little wriggle. It was a small noise, but it was there. "And no - no rainbows. I grew up with a brother and father who had color EVERYWHERE. My brothers new living room is bright orange and yellow and lime green and augh. It hurts my eyes. I go for pastels and not very many of them."

She shuddered a little at just the very memory of the horror. Bea's comments actually made Akuti snort a little bit, and she shook her head.

"No.. No. As far as I knew, I've never worn plaid. Or flannel. It would look horrible on you, too. The shaved heads and 'lumperjack shirts' kind of scare me."

"I'm glad we're in agreement," Beatrix said, "we seem to have the same sort of taste. Flannel is banned from my house. Even in the form of pyjamas. Does this mark as hopelessly femme?"

You didn't get much more feminine than Akuti and Beatrix combined, anyway, even if they were two distinctly different types of feminine.

"So growing up in a household of men didn't make you a tomboy."

"Last I was aware, being gay meant liking girls. You are most definitely a girl," Akuti assured her, and gave Bea's arm a brief pat with her free hand. "If your girls ever trick you into flannel or plaid, I'll be sure to inform you."

Her smile was small, and almost shy at the mention of her family. --Like Bea could see it. Still! It was the point of it. "Ah, no. Quite the opposite actually. Daddy liked to buy me pretty things, although they usually said something along the lines of 'all mommy wanted was a backrub', or 'Play ground pimp'. Iamel was protective. I don't think I had a choice to be anything else but girlie."

She turned towards the other woman as they continued their leisurely pace. This was comfortable. It was nice.

"What about you? Family outside of the girls...? Have you always been in Gaia?"

"No, not at all," said her date. "I come from -- London, on Earth, if you've heard of it. I only came to Gaia with my best friend around two years ago." No need to mention the 'lunatic asylum for ten years' thing; it was not a good second-date statement. She was still trying to figure out what kind of father encouraged his daughter to wear shirts saying Playground Pimp. "I was the eldest of two girls; my mother died when I was quite young. My father was a professor -- I attempted to follow in his footsteps. My real family now is Jack, I suppose."

Patrick was an interesting man, and had been much too immature to be saddled with as many children as he had been. When he had been 'given' Akuti (aka, purchased her without knowing better about purchasing items in Gaia), he had been nineteen years old and a waiter living on mommy and daddys money. Akuti thought nothing of it, although she refused to put Ben in such things.

"Jack?" She wasn't sure if Beatrix had talked about him... "If you've talked about him, my head just entirely blanked."

"Jack is my best friend," said the blonde woman, "I used to think of myself as something of his minder -- his driver, anyway." Why driver was somehow a title, and why it brought the ghost of a rueful smile to Beatrix's lips, was not really apparent. "We're both rogue academics. Who's in your social circle? You seem family-oriented."

"Driver?" Well, there was no hiding her surprise there, however mild it was. This time, she wasn't going to apologize for her words. "I'm impressed. Is he the type to always need minding?"

Questions, questions, everywhere. Still, it was better than saying absolutely nothing, wasn't it? Akuti rather thought so, and she kept up with the talking. Without realizing it, she leaned a bit closer to Bea. Why not? She wouldn't get beating up for it! Yay.

"I don't have a social circle. I don't have any friends."

"He is definitely the type to always need minding," said Beatrix, and there was the same ghost of a smile on her lips. Her arm tightened over Akuti's without seemingly thinking about it very much. "Jack is the type of man trouble goes looking for. In fact, trouble seems to have his address, phone number and schedule handy."

There was a slight pause as they crossed another road. "If you like," the slight blonde woman said after a while, "I'll introduce you. Jack is interesting. I know what it's like to have no social circle. And -- I was rather thinking you're in mine now."

Briskly, to follow this up: "After all, nobody else goes with me to the university concerts; I'm afraid you're a hot commodity." She tilted her head up, and because their proximity had gotten closer, accidentally brushed her cheek across Akuti's arm. She seemed -- or pretended well -- to not notice, or just passed it off as being a tiny Smurfette.

"That would be fun, if he doesn't mind me being thrust upon him." She had gotten rather used to Beas sudden changes in tone, and simply laughed quietly. The tightened arm received a little squeeze in return; Akuti smiled down at the aforementioned 'Smurfette' even though she knew Bea couldn't see it.

Her voice was mild, amused even, "I suppose I could come to like being a 'hot commodity'. University concerts are bound to be fun and even with moments of passive-aggressiveness, so are you. Just - don't be offended that I'm not offering to introduce you to my family. You would run away screaming into the night."

That actually elicited another short laugh from Beatrix. "I understand," she said, "though that's an apt description for -- well, meeting up with my family. My daughters are more than a little -- well, you can guess."

The mezzanine of the university music faculty was also pretty, though of course she could hardly appreciate anything but the layout and the architecture; there was already a sign up detailing the time that the orchestra would begin playing, though she would have to be closer to read it. "Jacoba brings new meaning to tomboy," she said, "and Wisp brings new meaning to both low attention span and lifelong flirtation with diabetes. You'd probably run screaming back into the arms of your own parents."

The faun very nearly beamed when she heard that laughter. She looked around the area as they meandered within, but she didn't attempt to even look at the sign, not yet. When they got closer, of course. At the moment...? Well, she had better things to talk about.

"I wouldn't be too ure of that. I already told you about my dad, I have six brothers to boot. The ones that aren't hyper and loud are grumpy and frequently violent. Kian has three eyes and he's the only brother that actually thinks of other people. Ade blows things up with his science set, and Katura is always throwing around some sort of sports ball and - and, well, Yashi's moved out, so..." She shrugged, "And my sister is a bird-girl with a beak who can't talk very well and..."

Akuti cut herself abruptly and gave a little laugh of her own. She tugged at Bea lightly, "There wouldn't be too much terror on my end, I think. You'd probably be able to cut Iamel down to size with your wit and way of putting things. It would be interesting, to say the least. --This place is lovely."

"I've heard it is," said her companion, as they made their way towards the entrance -- the orchestra were still tuning up, not bothering to hide that. The university kids all dressed in university clothes -- no dress uniforms or orchestra shirts -- and there were already some other people chatting in the tiered seats of the small ampitheater, as Beatrix -- without asking -- shuffled into one of the back rows with Akuti. "Six brothers? And I thought Jack was bad. I'm surprised you didn't grow up an incurable tomboy."

There was a pause as she sat herself down, smoothing out her clothes, and there was a wry smile on her pale face as she said: "My wit?"

"Iamel, Akilah, Kian, Yashima, Ade, Katura," Akuti supplied promptly at Bea's amusement or possible disbelief. "Ade and Katura have twin sisters who live with the other respective parents - they're Daddy's biological kids."

It all sounded rather commonplace to her: multiple children, a single parent, maybe two or three of those children with kids of their own, like herself or Iamel. If Beatrix had only been sixteen with two teenage daughters, it wasn't likely Akuti would bat a lash. Patrick had been only nineteen when he had first received Iamel (and Akuti, Yashima, and maybe one or two others).

"Besides," She said as they headed towards the back, "I think it was my way of trying to be different than them. Being unique in the White household is kind of a big deal and with as shy as I can be... well, being a tomboy would have been a feat."

The younger woman smiled even though she knew Beatrix couldn't see, and sat when they had reached the proper seats. When Iamel had first started dating a dancer, he had gone out of his way to talk and talk and talk about the man and the theatre. According to him, the back was the best.

"Oh yes. Your wit," Akuti grinned again and settled back into her seat with the slightest of contented sighs. "Very dry, a bit sharp. You would either love or loathe him, I think. You're better to talk to, either way. The lack of foul language every other word is refreshing."
