Alright, so my little brother is begging me to teach him Japanese (he's 7 y.o.), and my family is encouraging about it, but I can't seem to figure out anything that works. sweatdrop But they say it's better to learn at a younger age. I have almost no money for books or DVDs, so any cheaper material, websites, ideas, anything would be a big help.

So far the one thing I've had success on is counting, he can count at least to ten really easily, otherwise he knows a few words like 'ichigo', and 'konnichiwa'.

Thank you guys ^^

Ahaha teaching young kids is always fun. =]
greetings and commands are always good. Then go onto food, or animals. Explore what they like and teach them those words.
Sometimes breaking into the language randomly or using it in every situations will let them pick it up.

Don't teach them the grammar and all those theories. They won't understand a single thing XD

Aww man. If you do have money at some point, there's My Japanese Coach for the Nintendo DS. It just came out recently. Just letting you know. Sorry I'm not much help.

I totally agree with Gemi-san. Teach the very basics and don't worry about grammar.

Also, look up Japanese for Children in Google. Some pretty decent sites come up. Check this one out: http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/ It looks very well put together.

I wish you the best! Keep it all simple and make a game out of. Also, learn rock paper scissors in Japanese! My Japanese students played that game ALL the time just to decide who goes first or what color to make something. Make learning Japanese a fun and daily learning opportunity.

Teaching a child at the age of 7 really won't require a lot of material-- just speak Japanese to him.

I study linguistics in college and have an interest in language acquisition (on a level of applied linguistics).

At the age of 7, pure exposure will teach him just fine.

The cut off for exposure based learning comes in at around 11 years of age.

You won't even have to explain grammar to him-- just speak to him in Japanese and correct his mistakes.

Use plenty of pictures and verbal speaking. Also teach him simple phrases so that he will learn to say things. It wouldn't be bad to teach him some kanji with pictures and possibly Hiragana.

when i talk to my little brother, i start off with the basics, like: "konnichiwa"! genki desu ka? daijoobu ka? nani wo shiterun desu ka?

or if he does something good, i'd say: ii desu ne! sugoi! yatta!
but if he gives up on something, or have a test in school, id say: ganbatte ne. benkyooshimasu!

or if i want to ask if he's hungry, i say: onakawa suiteimasu ka?

basically, if you tell them simple words every day, they'll understand it more. then you can teach them more in sentence and grammar. and correct their grammar when they talk.
