Watching Her While She Sleeps
It is definitely true that a person, or any being for that matter, is at it's most precious state when it is asleep. The same would always hold true for my darling. The way her body gently rose and fell with each breath reminds me of the peaceful ripple of an ocean's surface. Her perfectly etched face was forever at peace; her eyes closed and mouth smiling, seemingly lost in a dream. Dark curls cascaded over her relaxed shoulders, framing my darling's angelic face.
I was sent to kill her, her of all people, and I found that I couldn't. She, the one person I could never kill, is the one I had to.
She just had to go and get herself into trouble. My poor, dear darling. But she knows too much. It mattered not that she found out on accident, just that she found out no more. My poor innocent childhood sweetheart. She just had to get in the way of the Salient's plans.
I could of course spare her and live on the run, for the Salient would hunt me down for not completing the task for which I was hired. But who wants to live their life running from their past? I have too much of a free spirit to live that way. But if I kill her, I shall be dooming myself to a life of despair.
I love her too much. I suppose that could be considered a good or bad thing depending on how you see it. Years ago we parted, never to see each other again, but my love for her never left me alone.
And now I'm here, mere feet away from her and I'm here to kill her. It's funny the way things unfold with time. I grew up with this girl, we were so perfectly in love, but then we split after senior high to go live our seperate lives; her as a medicinal journalist, and I, a contract killer. But now I grow tired of this line of work, I am merely twenty-three and already ready for a different adventure.
I've made my decision. It's the only way.
“Goodnight my darling.” I murmur.

All it would take was a single bullet and a life would be forever ended. The Salient's death wouldn't come as a surprise to many. There were many who hated him and when I came upon him that night he expected me to give a good report. But instead I raised my gun, took aim, and nothing.
It would only take that one bullet to slice through his heart of ice, shattering it, freeing me to be on my way and live a normal life. But I again, for the second time that night, find myself unable to kill.
“Go ahead,” he said,”We both know why you're here.”
I release the gun from my hand and is drops to the floor seemingly in slow motion. Heading towards the door, I turned back for a moment and looked into his calculating eyes,”Your life is worth nothing to me.”

“Hey, darling, go ahead to bed I'll be up in a minute to tuck you in.”
“Okay daddy.” she says giving me a swift kiss on the cheek.
It's been nearly six years since I almost took my loves life and I have not heard one word from the Salient. Maybe he's decided I'm not worth his time. No matter, I've put my past entirely behind me, locked it away, never to repeat it.
I smile and climb the stairs. I nod to my darling as she prepares for bed in our room and continue to my daughter's room. I find her already asleep.
“Goodnight my darling.” I whisper, planting a kiss on her cheek and tucking a curly chocolate lock behind her ear.
