Ok a little while ago I made this comment in a subject about make up:
Quote:
I hate seeing those young girls dressed up like tarts, I get the need to act mature, but surely parents don't let their kids go out in belt like skirts & bra like tops & faces covered in some cheap crap that passes for make up...I can't just be me that thinks that these mini prostitutes can't be in for a good life!
but lately I have been thinking as I look around and see these young girls.
I find it scary as well a disgusting the influence that the media has on young girls...I mean look at Bratz & Barbies who's key line generally involve things to do with 'lets go get the boys' these toys are designed for pre-teens & I find this outrageous!!!!!!
Also a while ago I was doing working experience in a school with kids of 12 & they werefilling out a form about what they for in a boyfriend (flooking for answers like friendship)& they were writing things like sex & other rediculuse things like this!!!
Please offer your opinions
Prostitute is a bit of a strong phrase but as for the other things, I completely agree.
But it isn't a matter of faux "feminism" and "empowerment" to young girls. Really, it's sexualizing girls with this idea that they have a high self esteem by dressing in such a way that eccentuates the sexuality that they really don't have yet. It's very strange to me how anyone can wonder at the fact that violence against women and sexual assault is ever going to go away when women and girls are constantly bombarded by this media idealized version of themselves.
It really makes me sick to go to my little sister's dance shows at her school and see twelve year old girls in these outfits hat are obviously meant to make people see tham as sexual beings. I wonder at the fact that I was never like that and then realize it's because I wasn't raised to consider anyone with a bit more fame my better. I was also raised by a strong female figure in my mother and grandmother and beyond the media the only people who have more influence on you from an early age are your parents.
Your parents can't stop you from reading entertainment magazines and such but they can raise you to look at them differently. They can teach you to have a mind of your own; to look at things objectively. The emphasis needs to be put on the love of not learning but being educated above learning. When you learn to like being informed and intelligent you learn to love learning and then you're getting somewhere. It's just unfortunate how many shitty parents there are and how many parents were never taught to think for themselves and refer to the media for everything including parenting skills. How can a girl help feeling down about herself when she reads about "Britney Spears amazing body" and looks at herself and panics at not having it; she doesn't know any better.
A strong female parental figure is imperative for any child's development. There is no greater type of man then a feminist man.
Went on a rant there, sorry about that
