I heard this from a consumer reporter on a local talk show radio and decided to research it so i knew the facts.

Viacom, which owns many television stations like Comedy Central, MTV and Cartoon Network is suing Google, which owns Youtube.

Because You Tube allows users to upload copyrighted material.

In July there was a ruling in the courts which gave Viacom access to records of what people watch on YouTube and who they are! Consumer advocates such as Clark Howard, who i listen to, warned of the potential privacy violations, particularly if Viacom uses the information to track down and sue people who watch copyrighted video clips on the site.

I am confused, can they really do that? Sue us for just watching it?
It's not like we were warned it was illeagle.

Source.

Viacom is just upset that they didn't think of YouTube.

it's stupid. The fuss is mostly because the internet is so easily accessible, depriving them of zomg!profits. If you apply the same lawsuit (and potential outcome) to youtube then what's to stop them from saying the same of sharing music on cd's or vhs? Vhs is already getting obscure it's just easier to burn copies of a movie on dvd for a friend.

I think the problem lies in the mass scope of youtube, you aren't just sharing something with a friend or two but potenitally millions of people.
