Ok, So I am going through depression, only seeing a psychiatrist every few months and a counselor I can't talk to. I am on medication that isn't working, and my psychiatrist was told, I just really don't know what to do, I had to get my meds changed by my family doctor because I couldn't see the shrink. I don't even know why I am depressed, and the shrink just keeps telling me things that I already do, I need help and I'm not getting it, I really don't know what to do , could someone please help?

I don't know what your psychiatrist has told you, so I apologize if I happen to repeat stuff they've said. Something that works for me, if I don't know why I'm feeling the way I am, I think back to what I was thinking of, or what happened around me right before I got depressed. Because finding out what causes it, can sometime be the only thing that works, 'cause then you can change it, or stay away from it. Although I think realistically, that's really hard to do. Do you have any close friends to just talk to? Maybe if you just start talking, you'll find out something that you didn't know and maybe it relates to your depression right now. When you feel really depressed, you could try writing. You don't have to make a story or anything, maybe just exactly how you feel then and maybe it'll help.

I would talk to your psychiatrist, or whoever is giving you your medication, and ask if you can try something else. One medication isn't going to work for every single person who has depression or other mental illnesses. My ex's mother was depressed and suicidal and was on a variety of medications to try to keep her well. More than once when she was admitted to a hospital or psychiatric facility, she had her medications changed to try and find something that would work the best for her.
Do you mind if I ask why you can't talk to your counselor?
Fiaroka had a suggestion that could help - if you can't talk to your counselor, for whatever the reason, you can try to find someone else to talk to. School counselor, another trusted adult, a close friend, etc.
You can also try to find an outlet for your depression and your feelings - write in a journal, write poetry, listen to music, draw, paint, and so on. Maybe through trying to explore your feelings, you may get to the root of what's causing your depression.
Lastly, if you don't like your psychatrist/counselor, or if you think they're not helping, ask your parents to take you to someone else. It's hard to feel like you're getting help and feel like things are getting better if you can't connect with the person who's supposed to be helping you.

Fiaroka, I have been depressed since I was a kid, suicidal since grade 8, and I've been going over everything, and none of it has caused me to feel this way. Nikolita, the thing with where I live in Canada is that I only have the option of the one Psychiatrist, because we are to poor to offord a private one. It really sucks, also I just can't conect to my councelor, but I am going to try to change to soemone else. The place I live doesn't have many options for councelors, and since I am only 17 I am stuck with the child psychiatrists, this current one is east indian(as is the other) and he told me that it doesn't matter what med. I am on that it should work, and that I shouldn't be depressed. So I stopped seeing him. I was raised being told not to 'put you s**t on others' so I have a hard time talking to my friends, and don't have a close adult either. Over the years I have tried all those suggestions for an outlet, and none of them has really worked, they work for my anger. It's just really hard because neither me nor my mother can figure out why I am this way, and the psychiatrists here don't do counceling, they just dish out meds.

In addition to the PM's I sent you, I'm copying over my post from WWO in case anyone else wants to see it: Quote: Medication can be a big help. smile I have a close friend IRL who has anxiety and depression issues that were really bad a few years ago. Thankfully she's better now. Anyways, she found the right anti-depression medication, and the right anti-anxiety medication (which she only took when she needed it, once she was able to control her attacks better), and she's much better now. It's just finding the right one that works for you. This is an article on anti-depressants: http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities/depression/treatment/antidepressants/index.aspAside from describing what anti-depressants are and how they work, it also describes the various types of anti-depressants and lists some brand names, which you might be able to give to your doctor/psychiatrist the next time you see them. If you can't think of a reason for your depression, maybe it's a chemical imbalance? And if you're ever wanting to talk to someone, you can always come and post here. That's one of the reasons why this guild is here. heart We might not always be around to reply immediately, but you can vent to get off your chest, or you can post an issue in a thread, whatever. If it's an emergency, I can give you my MSN if you want to PM me and you can try finding me there.

Thanks, I do think it is a chemical imbalance, my mother went through the same thing, anyway hopefully soon things will be better, I'm going to try to see my doctor to get my meds changed because they are making me worse off than before. Which sucks. But thank you for the help
