Jan had been playing since ten that morning, only pausing for a short snack at noon. It was two now, and her music was generating the interest it was supposed to. The music store she'd long been a patron of, Funkin' Records, was having a big sale to try and generate some revenue. When they'd asked Jan to come by and play some tunes to get walker-by to take a peek, she'd naturally agreed. She was a very good player and singer, and it was working. Although she had her guitar case open, which had quickly begun to fill with bills, she was giving most of it to the shop as a donation. They'd often given her free records, discounts on amps, all sorts of goodies.

It was a nice place, old, out-of-the-way, and filled with almost anything music-wise you could think of. It was Jan's second-favorite store, the first being the neighborhood garden shop by her flat.

Some of the music was familiar songs, but most of it was all original. Jan's low voice crooned into the microphone, her lyrics pouring forth with a quiet insistance, not pushy, just wanting.

"When it rains it pours
it pours on us, baby
I would give you everything
If I knew what that was..."

When women walking by gave her startled looks at her lyrics, she just met their gazes with her serious brown eyes.

"I see you in the moonlight, those stars in your eyes
Your lips like the ocean
the whole world in your thighs..."

Leaving the bakery from a late lunch, a rather satisfied young woman strolled out the front doors with more chocolate covered donuts than healthy for any one person. Lily took a deep breath, treasuring the aroma of the boxed donuts, then set out to walk the streets and gradually make her way home.

As she rounded the corner, however, a deep, lilting voice called her attention. Sharp blue eyes flickered to the stores across the street, a humble shop with a sign reading "Funkin' Records" nestled neatly at the end. While there wasn't a gigantic crowd, there certainly was a consistent number of traffic giving particular attention to the voice outside the door. Curiosity piqued, Lily darted across the street and stared at the shop. A myriad of records and instruments were readily displayed through the windows, fliers lined alongside the door with announcements of musical gatherings of all sorts.

Turning her attention to the singer, Lily found herself rather liking the sound of the woman's voice. While the woman herself appeared to have a strange collection of what she assumed were tattoos, the look in her eyes and the sound of her voice were so earnest that people couldn't help but stop to listen.

Like the crowd around her, Lily was enthralled by the siren's voice. Unlike the crowd around her, however, she also had a different take on it. She politely waited for the song to finish before unabashedly making comment with perfect seriousness, "Pretty large thighs for the world to fit about."

She obviously missed the metaphor.

Jan was delighted. Her slow grin was charming, and her brown eyes flicked briefly down, then up Lily's body to center on her face. It was about time for a lunch break, and she turned off the microphone, slipping off her guitar and tilting her head to the side. Today was a simple, warm day. A mocha colored tank-top, navy blue bandana tied around her neck, and dark-blue, well-worn jeans. Sandles on her feet, a hairtie holding back what it could, and a few braided bracelets and anklets rounded out the outfit.

"'How 'bout ya gift me one o' yer donuts, an' I explain et to ya?" A perfectly friendly offer. The tall, lean girl gestured to the nearby fountain, which had several benches to sit on about it.

"Why have one when you can have two?" Goodness knows she had donuts to spare. Besides, it was always better to have sugar lovers around. The more chocolate that was eaten, the more it was demanded, and thusly the more it would be made and more widely accessible. It was made of pure win all the way around.

Lily walked beside the singer, only now realizing that the woman was actually taller than herself. Being a bit taller than the average female, Lily had gotten used to seeing which side of the head someone's hair was artfully split around. By this siren, however, she could actually pass with wearing heels.

Picking a bench least likely to be used as target practice by the local birds, Lily lavishly procured the box and pulled back the lid, holding the box up as offering towards the tall woman.

Wow. It was nice to find a girl not completely dwarfed by Jan's own height. The blonde's manner was easy, smooth as she took a seat, calmly choosing a donut and cleanly biting a piece off. Swallowing, she spoke, speaking voice not quite as low and husky as her singing tone.

"'M Jan." An introduction. She gestured fluidly to the record shop, nodding slightly. "'M helpin' th'shop out with a sale. They're good people." Polishing off her first donut she then turned to the song, her smile thoughtful. "Et's my pers'nal world, y'see. 'Er body, love, et's everythin', even though et's 'ard as 'ell on us."

This was all said rather casually, somewhat confirming the girl as gay.

It was refreshing to watch a complete stranger bite with confidence into a food given by someone they didn't know. Any city dweller would have kept their eyes straight, the kind to bump shoulders and not even blink or look back. Cold. Here, however, it felt instantly more comfortable in atmosphere. Chewing on her own donut (regardless of having recently eaten), it just made the day seem that much more pleasant.

"Sounds like you've known them for a while." Lily smiled, looking over at the shop. It appeared it would be worth checking out at the least. She looked back over when the woman started describing the song, avidly listening. Body, love, everything?

"Not worried about mixing personal world against wide world, I take it?" She briefly paused, trying to decipher the layers, "Of course, that's probably what makes it the hard part."

After another moment, she added, "Ah, and I'm Lily. Pleased to meet you, Jan."

Jan's charming smile grew, and her dark eyes brightened playfully. "Oh, naw, miss. I didn' know 'er when I sang tha'. Not yet, anyway." Stretching, she let her laugh free. "A pleasure t'meetcha, Lily." She shook her head.

"'M naw 'fraid of much anymore, though tha's not always a good thing, ya hear?"

It wasn't that Jan was particularly trusting, it was more that she had a great intuition, and also frequented the area and recognized the donut box as coming from a bakery she loved. She was a smart girl, too.

"Probably means you're not reckless enough." Lily gave a serious nod, but quickly converted to a wry smirk. She wasn't one to talk about getting out of a box, afterall. Briefly wondering where the accent came from, Lily gave a mental shrug and turned her focus elsewhere.

Ignorant of Jan's knowledge of the area, Lily eyeballed the line of shops, "Think there are any shops that sell music boxes? I've actually been interested in getting one recently. That Funkin' Records seems to have quite a mix, anyways."

Thoughts collided, and she made a quick mental U-turn, "Oh wait! Before I forget, do you happen to have any CDs of your own music? Goodness knows you're talented enough."

"I'm really naw, yer righ'. I do some odd things, but I've gotten so used t'em tha' they're naw reckless anymore."

"Th' type tha' y'open up 'n a lil' ballerina starts spinnin'? Sure, 'bout a mile away 'r so. 'ere's th' address." Jan pulled out a small pad of paper and scribbled something down, tearing the sheet off and handing it to the other blonde. "Th'owner, Lyrus, blue-'aired fellow, es a pers'nal frien'. He'll give ya a good deal." It was a junk shop, but it had a lot of treasures. Especially for pretty women. Lyrus was a bit of a playboy.

When it came to her own music, Jan was a tad reserved, and smiled slightly, head tilting down so her pale hair shaded her eyes. "Ah, naw, I don'. I play fer fun, mainly, so. I do live shows, 'n such."

"You could always do something spur of the moment that you normally would be afraid of doing? Like," She looked around for quick inspiration, "Dance in the fountain?" Lily gave a short laugh at the imagery, figuring it probably wasn't even legal.

"Not a ballerina per se, but something of the sort. Hoping for something a bit more elegant with a nature theme carved about it." Watching Jan pull out paper and pen, Lily chuckled and shook her head, "Music guru and directionally adept. Not bad. I'll be sure to check it out." For the longest of time, Lily had thought the sun rose in the North. Direction wasn't really her forte. She blamed it on reading too much fiction when she was younger.

"Well, at least you avoid the commercialization." Lily slightly wrinkled her nose at the thought, "But you should at least record a CD for yourself, just to say that you did it. Wouldn't even have to show it off, just add it to your personal collection. And let me borrow it for an hour." Computers were wonderous tools for making copies of things. If they ever met again, Lily determined that she would drag the poor woman down to a studio just to get a record of a song, "Live shows are probably more personal too, huh? What's it like?"

"Tha's th' thing, Miss Lily, I'm naw 'fraid t'do somethin' like that et all. Naw 'friad o' much." She'd done it, in fact, when she was younger and it was hotter out. A quick grin. "Wha' I need es emotional exci'ment."

A pause as Jan mulled over Lily's words, and she shrugged, an easy smile on her face, almost sheepish. "I dunno 'bout recordin' anythin'... Yea, I gen'rally pick someone out t'sing ta, 'n tha' makes et a better performance."

Blowing hair out of her eyes, the girl took her second donut from the box. "Well, I bes' be gettin' back to my strummin' 'n caterwallin', eh? Et was awful nice meetin' ya." Getting to her feet, she stored the donut between her teeth and tossed the shorter blonde a wink before strolling across the small square and into the music shop.

Perhaps they'd cross paths again one day.

"Watch out for sea men." Lily called out after her, not bothering to think the reference was likely lost. Closing the lid to the donut box and tucking it neatly under arm, she dusted herself off and stood. Holding the paper at hand, blue eyes located the street she was on. Foot steps turned away as she followed the map to see what treasures she could find.
