Guild Affiliation/Guild War

Here you will find out the elusive mysteries of the voluntary acts known to Guild Captains as 'Affiliation/Alliance' and 'Guild War'. There is no one way to do either of these actions, but this sticky will teach you what the terms mean and give you some advice on how to set up your own Affiliation/War.

What is a Guild Affiliation/Alliance?

A Guild Affiliation/Guild Alliance is a term that means that two or more guilds have an agreement. They will advertise for each other, usually with a link on the front of their guild and maybe a sticky inside. Any user that is a member of one guild in the alliance is usually automatically accepted in the other guilds, or at least has a better chance of getting in.

Why should I do this? What can I do with an Affiliation/Alliance?

For starters, it's free advertising with very few catches! You'll build up a network of friends that you can set up Affiliation-wide events with, such as contests, roleplay scenarios, and charities. The limit is your imagination and the willingness of the rest of your network to participate.

Another good reason is that if your guild participates in a Guild War, your affiliates/allies may come to help you!

Can I ally with a Forum Thread?

Yes, in fact some Guilds already do this. Keep in mind that rules apply about advertising GGNs outside of Chatterbox and Registered Guilds, and the same applies to advertising anything but GGNs in Registered Guilds, so it's going to be a stiffer alliance with less you can do in terms of shared advertising. However, shared members and shared ideas/events are still options

Can I break off my Affiliation?

Yes, you're free to dissolve your alliances at any time. Be polite and tell the Guilds involved, so they can take the link to your Guild off of their Guild Front, and be sure to take them off of yours. Do this politely. Do not be a jerk about it. You can be reported for the flaming.

Do not report a Guild that you affiliated with if they are not linking to you. Contact the Guild Owner and ensure that they are aware of the affiliation if they did not set it up. If they refuse to link to you, dissolve your affiliation with them and be done with it quietly, please.

Above all, please remember that Affiliation is a private matter between you and other users. Do not get the GGN Moderators involved unless things get nasty and the TOS is violated.

What is a Guild War?

Apart from being a highly addictive MMORPG, this term means many things, not all of which are entirely legal on Gaia. It almost always is done with Fighting/Military RP Guilds as that's the easiest excuse to start up a large fight. However, School based Guilds can enjoy a Guild War as well (Multi-School Battles are infamous in anime and Harry Potter), and it's a unique experience to give your members that will keep them active and begging for more!

A Guild War can be either of these things:

  • An organized short term or long term event that all of the involved Guilds agree on as a fun way to improve activity. This is legal on Gaia. No one gets upset or hurt.
  • A malicious attack on a Guild without permission from the Guild Owners, flaming the members and 'killing' them. This is an ILLEGAL Guild War, it violates the TOS and the victim guild has the right to ban the members who attack them. If it's done to a public guild, then they have the right to ban from public posting and tell a GGN Moderator about it.
An advertising campaign used to slander another guild or its owner, and steal members. This is ALSO illegal and can lead to banning (see TOS section #4b).

Guild Wars are risky, even the legal version can end badly and upset people. Be very careful how you set up your War and keep it fun for all involved. See the post regarding "How do I..?" for more information.

How do I create an alliance/affiliation?

Good question! It's a different system for everyone. You may want to set up a "Sign Up Here" thread in this forum or in Registered Guilds with details such as the theme of your guild, how many affiliates you'd like, and any specific demands you have of your affiliates. You can do that in the Registered Guilds Forum, in Chatterbox, or here in the Captains' Guild!

Another idea is to look around the Registry and privately contact the Captains of a Guild. Check the front of the Guild first, they may have special demands if you want to affiliate with them, such as a form to fill out or a specific person to contact. Make sure to do exactly as requested, or they'll probably deny your request. It's the same as joining a guild, really, you're an unofficial member. In fact it's considered polite to have at least one member of your crew join the guilds you affiliate with. They do not have to be made crew in the Affiliated Guild, nor should anyone be pressured or demanded to do so as a requirement of affiliation.

After you have your first few affiliates, list their name and a link to their Guild on your Guild Front/Home and/or a sticky inside your Guild. They have the right to refuse to do this for you if you refuse to do it for them.

Tips for a Successful Guild Affiliation

  • Choose Guilds that have something in common with your Guild. For example, if you have an Anime Guild, don't affiliate with a Wrestling Guild, you won't share many members and you won't have much to work together on...
  • Keep records of the Guilds you affiliate with. Keep an eye on their member lists and make sure someone doesn't claim to be a member who isn't. A fast way to do this is to share crew, it's not always a wise idea however, only do it if you are sure you can trust the shared member.
  • Stay friendly with your affiliates! Create join events, talk frequently on messengers about the planned future of your guilds, and just maintain a general friendship. They're your ally, treat them like one!
  • Plan a theme among your affiliates such as a shared name style, a theme to the Guild Front, or a setup of the subforums. It's a cute way to let people know you're all joined together. The side effect, however, is that if someone leaves the affiliation, they will have to change their entire Guild... so only do this if you know the Gulds will be affiliated for a long time!
Help when you are asked! This is a partnership, if someone in your affiliation is having a problem in their guild, help them with it. You will probably need help later on and they'll be happy to help you in return for your earlier assistance.

What NOT to do with a Guild Affiliation

  • Don't steal ideas if you haven't planned to all look alike. Guilds are subject to copyright protection and you can get in trouble for stealing graphics, text, and ideas.
  • Don't expect everyone else to do all the work. If you want to be advertised with their guild, you have to advertise for them as well. If you want a joint contest, you have to participate in setting it up and/or agree to judge it. If you want to have their members in your guild, you have to openly tell your members about their guild and let them go join the other guilds too. It's just not fair otherwise and they will probably disband from your affiliation.
  • Don't set up an affiliation just to get inside information before starting a Guild War. That's rude, will piss off a lot of people, and can possibly get you in trouble with a GGN Moderator.

Can I charge Gaia Gold for affiliating with my guild?

Some guilds are so hugely popular that affiliation with them is a status symbol, and they don't want to have a huge list on their homepage. Affiliation fees are a good way to deter all but the most serious affiliations, people who will actually work to make the affiliation strong. You can ask the gold be donated to your guild, or paid directly to you as the Captain.

Try not to ask for an outrageous amount such as 10000 gold. After all, Affiliation breaks down to just a link on your homepage, sharing of members, and allowance into certain events. Be mindful that in the end, the fee will only work if people pay it. If no one pays your fee, try dropping it down a little.

How do I start a Guild War?

First off, note above in the previous posts the two types of guild wars that are not considered proper to attempt on Gaia. These are primarily used to chase off members of a guild so the Guild Owner is forced to sell it or to claim that winner takes loser's guild. Gaia Moderators reserve the right to interpret that as a scam if you do such things.

Guild Wars should be fun games that all sides agree on, with no cruel consequences. Gaia Moderators may step in if a Guild War becomes a TOS violation.

Tips on Running a Fun and Successful Guild War

  • Check and make sure the other Guild is open for Guild Wars. It's suggested to put a note on your Home Page, especially if you are Public.
  • Talk to everyone involved first. Make sure they want to do this.
  • Decide in advance what happens at the end of the war, don't turn it into a 'to the victor go the spoils' thing.
  • Make sure everyone agrees on if there is a prize/what the prize is for the winners. Don't agree on it if you can't pay it. You cannot use the Guild Account to pay the debt. It does not leave the Guild Account.
  • Keep the war fair. If the war is an actual War, decide ahead of time what rules of roleplay battle will be used, and choose third party users to enforce those rules.
Run the war on neutral territory. Either an extra Guild, or out in the Gaia Forums in Chatterbox.

Remember, these are guidelines, not actual rules. Rules are for you and your opponent to set yourself. Guild Wars are a member-run event and you are ultimately responsible for how it happens and what occurs afterward. No one has to follow these guidelines aside from in keeping the 'War' TOS-friendly, but it will ensure a fun time is had by all involved.

What NOT to do with a Guild War

  • Don't be a jerk and force the War on another Guild. If they refuse to play with you, that's their choice. Continuing to harass them about it can force a moderator's hand and get you banned.
  • Don't take a Guild War personally. If a person declares war on your guild, it doesn't mean they hate you, or they want to destroy your guild. They may just like what they see and want to test their guild against yours.
Don't report a guild for cheating because you don't want to pay them a prize for beating you. Be a good loser and pay up if you made a deal about prizes. Refusal can lead to scam charges.

Can I charge an entry fee for the Guild War?

If you have multiple guilds (4 or more) that you plan to take part in the Guild, it's a pretty good idea to have an entry fee be sent to add to a prize pool (if you all decide there will be a prize). Keep in mind that the prize cannot come from any Guild Account. Set a mule aside to recieve the trades/hold onto the prizes and hand them out.

If there is any scamming that occurs through this, moderators will step in, so please ensure that everyone agrees to the entry fee amount, and if you think you cannot pay the fee, don't enter the War.
