I just finished The Rowan by Anne McCaffrey and I just wanted to see what people think of this series. I'm not really sure if I like the first book or not...

The correct answer is "slimy." They are also very large and smelly.

Arachnakid I just finished The Rowan by Anne McCaffrey and I just wanted to see what people think of this series. I'm not really sure if I like the first book or not... Perhaps it suffered from the same dryness people comment on in the Dragonriders of Pern thread?

I absolutely love "the Rowan". It is the first in a series. The second book is "Damia", then "Damia's Children", "(another title I can't remember)", and "(something) and the Hive". I actually think there's a total of five (another one after the Hive.. but I only found up to book three in my library at the time.) I'm hoping they'll come to my book club so I can buy the whole series... there shouldn't be anymore since the author - Andre Norton - died a few years back. Maybe I'll check Ebay for the set (my parents will kill me if I buy anymore books... sweatdrop ). So, no, you're not alone. The Rowan is a fabulous series that I devoured. You should really read Damia... it's even better than the Rowan. I just don't think it was as widely publicised because the Pern series reached more ages and both genders... where as the Rowan series is almost a sort of romance. In fact, a series I'm working on is loosely similar to the Rowan in the combining of mental abilities with technology... but that's about the only connection. I'm also using old world magic and mythology.
