Quinn yawned, and stumbled down a random street. His mom had stop bothering to care where he went, and he found himself wandering around aimlessly most days, now. He wasn't even sure where he was, but he was confident he'd find his way home. His stomach rumbled.

"Aww, I didn't bring any chocolate bars." Quinn rummaged through his pockets, searching for any scraps of food. He didn't have any. His pockets were also distressingly empty of money. "I guess I'm gonna have to find some more money soon...I wouldn't want Mama to get hungry." He pronounced Mama with an accent on the second 'ma', so it didn't sound American. He ran a hand through his hair and decided to actually pay attention to his surroundings. He was still unsure where he was, but one small building caught his eye.

"Oo, pretty flowers!" He saw many vibrantly colored flowers of different kinds around the shop, and ran up to touch them. He sniffed a few, and picked one, tucking it into his belt. Something small in the back of his mind attempted to convince him to enter the building. Something large in the front of his mind wasn't sure about that.

"I wonder if I should go inside," Quinn wondered aloud- most of his wondering was done aloud- "Or if I should just try to find my way home." He glanced around longingly at the flowers, and was hit with a strong wave of emotion. He wanted to meet who could grow such beautiful flowers. And also, he was hungry. Maybe they were old. Old people gave food for complements.

He pushed open the door slowly, and glanced around inside. He sniffed in the scent of all the flowers. "Hello?" He called out, not bothering to check his immediate vicinity for people, "Anyone here?"

"Yes, there are people here, and yes, you should probably find your way home," an icy voice snapped from behind the counter. Persy glared the boy down, her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed. "If you lived around here, you would know that I don't take kindly to my flowers being picked." She eyed the stray bloom on his belt loop with a scowl.

It took her a moment to realize that there was a divine connection to the boy, but once she did, her expression only darkened, and she muttered to herself in some old language, and regardless of what she said, it certainly didn't sound pretty. "Boy, have you been introduced to the Game?" she asked, still very cross. It would seem that her language wasn't nearly as flowery as her surroundings, or her hair for that matter.

Quinn frowned, but then his expression turned more to fright. "Uh, I'm sorry Ma'am! I didn't mean to- I'm sorry I- I'll just- Game?" He perked up immediately at the mention of a game. "I'm sorry, no, I haven't." He hesitated, halfway in and halfway out of the doorway. "Should I have been?"

Quinn was a bit afraid. The lady looked nice, but sounded un-nice. And she wasn't old enough to get food for complements. "And would you happen to have any food? Er, that is, if it isn't a bother- I wouldn't want to- Now what about a game?" He hung his head exasperatedly.

Persy offered little more than an exasperated sigh, shaking her head. "This isn't a restaurant, it's a flower shop, and either way, I don't feed thieves." It was obvious that, once again, there was a child who didn't have the slightest clue why they were so strange. Didn't word spread around these days? Wasn't Anubis doing his job?

"The Game affects certain people in the City," Persy explained, "Or did you think you were just naturally born with all those colors?"

"I'm not a- I didn't mean- I know that- Augh!" Persy made him nervous. He decided to revert into his cuteness little boy mode, and his eyes watered a bit, before he rubbed them away. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do anything wrong." He sniffled again, and wiped at his eyes some more. "I'll be sure not to do so in the future, and if you want, I'll even stand guard outside and make sure no one touches your flowers!" He turned his head to the ground.

"No, I didn't think I was just naturally born with them. But I don't know what Game you're talking about. Is that why I have feathers in my hair? I guess that could be a reason." He thought about this. "Does that mean I'm like, a rook? Like on a chessboard? That's my favorite piece."

Persy couldn't help it--she just stared. The kid wanted to guard the place? Was he serious? Her expression changed to confusion, though after a moment, she shook her head and decided that it just wasn't work thinking about.

"...Sure, you can be the rook, if you'd like to think of it that way," Persy responded, trying to get back on topic. "What matters is the person playing chess. Your god. You and your god have a connection, and if you two play well enough, you win the Game. And winning the Game is winning the world." She smiled: this was when their expressions always got interesting.

"Winning the world? That sounds neat." He paused for a moment. "It does sound like a lot of responsibility, though." He thought for a moment, then grinned. "I like winning games! What do I have to do?"

"Wait. I have a God? Is that why I've got feathers and wierd hair?" He illustrated this by pulling a strand of hair in front of his face and staring at it. "Who's my god?" He slipped into inquisitive mode- question after question after question. This happened alot when he was nervous or interested. In this case, both.

"To win, you fight. You eliminate all the others just like you. It's simple, really--be the last one standing," Persy said with an offhand gesture, glad that, even if the kid was strange, he at least caught on to the idea fairly quickly.

"And as for your god..." She paused, looking him over with a furrowed brow, but couldn't seem to come to a conclusion one way or the other. "...One moment."

She turned on her heels and quickly paced to the back door, entering the hall and shutting the door behind her, leaving behind nothing but the sound of footsteps, and then, eerie silence. Moments later, her footsteps returned, and she emerged from the strange hall, this time holding a necklace of pure gold, the clasp appearing to be the head of a feathered snake and the charm a pair of opal feathers that shimmered rainbows in the light.

"Your god, should you enter the Game," she said, holding the necklace out, "is Quetzalcoatl".

He squirmed uncomfortably as she left, and decided to take the time to take the flowers out of his belt and hide them innocuously in another bouquet around. He made sure the colors matched nicely, but she managed to catch him anyway. He sighed, and left the flower in the bouquet, turning back to her to hit her with a barrage of questions.

"But fighting isn't cool. I can, but...We should have peace!" He thought about this for a moment. "Winning IS cool, though. We'll see. I'll join!" he reached out and snatched the necklace from her, slipping it around his neck.

"Queet- Keat- Quetz-" He got a pained expression on his face, "Mr. Q? Alright!" He fidgeted with the necklace. "So. How do I know what to do?"

"Your god will let you know," Persy explained, unwrapping her fingers from the necklace once he had a firm grasp of it in his hand. "He should be meeting with you soon, now that you've accepted your role in the Game."

"I can give you one free question of outside information, but other than that, from this point forward, you have to barter. Is there anything else you need to know?"

"Hm," He thought for a moment, then came to his conclusion, "Who is the easiest player for me to eliminate? Meaning, who should I look for first to defeat?" He looked at her, hopefully.

Shrewd question, child.

"AAAAAAHHH! WHAT WAS THAT?"

Your god. Quetzalcoatl.

"Oh."

Persy paused, then began to shake her head, laughing. "A good question, kid, but an answer you probably won't want to hear. The thing is, you're currently at the bottom of the totem pole. Until you meet with your god and handle your powers, you won't be defeating anything, much less another prophet."

She crossed her arms as she felt the mezo-American god enter her presence, her body stiffening. "So nice for you to join us," she said to the air, expecting more subservience from the divinity while he was in her sanctuary.

Why yes, I apologize. Thank you for showing my...prodigy here what is going on. I suppose you wouldn't mind if I took him, now?

"Hey, Wait!" Quinn protested, "She didn't answer my question, so I'm going to ask another one. Hmm..." He thought about it for a moment, "Who should I look for first? Like, in general. As a friend, or anything. Who should I find first? Not necessarily to defeat. Or, If that one's too hard, what can I do to make you like me?" He got a sense this lady was important, and he wanted to do something for her. "Anything you need done?"

Persy frowned again, and somewhere in the back of the shop leaves rustled in discontent. "I did answer your question, just not to your expectations. As for allies, you'll have to find them on your own, and you certainly can't ally with me--I'm neutral." She bit back a huff of indignation -- to be accused of not doing her job, the nerve! -- and went back to her place behind the counter.

"And if you want any chance of me liking you, then you'll kindly leave now, and only come back for something important, like a trade." Her expression darkened and she crossed her arms, a throwback to her attitudes with the first few players of the Game.

"Uhm, uh, okay! I'm sorry I was a bother. Thank you very much!" He nodded vigorously, and turned towards the door. He opened it and stepped out, taking a deep breath like it was the first one he had taken since he entered.

"That was wierd. And she didn't seem to like me much."

She doesn't seem to be a pleasant person in general.

"Oh, well. So, I guess we just start doing whatever?"

Onward!

"Hooray!"
