How long had he waited to hear that? Anna expressed it with so much love and sincerity that it melted him to the core. She didn't fear him; not his markings, his eyes of fire, or his true nature as a beast, a dragon.

"I love you too, A'mael. So much." His eyes searched hers and he felt himself being pulled in. "Your child-like curiosity and infinent knowledge of all that you've seen. I love your eyes, your hair of silk, and the beautiful way you blush. Every thing about you Anna, your delicate features and petite elven frame." He softly stroked her cheek. "You are my world, all fit into your perfect soul."

Sleep called to him as well as to Anna. The two would have to say goodnight. Both had had a long day and a night full of stories that foretold many more nights to come. "I believe this must be goodnight for us both."

Anna knew she was still in a stage of shyness, and that she couldn't just yet express herself in words the way Pyralis could, but the blush he favored so came once more and spoke her gratitude for what he had the mind to say.

She hugged him ever so tightly before saying, "Thank you, my A'mael. You're right... we're both tired. But the sooner we sleep, the sooner tomorrow will come." Anna's face turned up to him with a big smile. "Good night, Pyralis. I love you."

It took everything she had to give him a final squeeze and let go. How she looked forward to the day when they might drift off to sleep together and not have to be separated like this every night. Some of her dreams of late had been dark, but could be handled. She just wished she had a warm Pyralis to make her sleep calmer.

"Good night sweet Anna." How nice it would be to fall asleep with her beside him, but that was not to be just yet. They still had to part each night for the time being.

With her gone, Pyralis glanced once more at the map, and then proceeded to shut off his lamp and get into his bed. Sleep easily took him. Dreams of his love saw him through the night.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Morning's light seeped into the room due to curtains already drawn back by a man already awake. Pyralis went over his findings once more in his head. Satisfied, he strolled out of his room to talk with the headmaster.

In the same manner as last time, Pyralis went to his bed. Though this time around, Anna did not appear and the dragon went straight to his bed. The light was never even flicked on and off to dreamland he went. Unfortunately, tonight was more of a land of nightmares that the good dreams of his love. A darkness made of more than the night settled over the room.

Screaming. Blood. Tears. Where was he? Smoke. Sobbing. Wait. Where was Anna? Where was his love? Pyralis ran through his dream searching for her. Everything in his being said she needed him. She was in danger and he had to help her. Desperately he sought her mind with his own. Blackness. Nothingness. The mind link was gone. He was in the dark and his love had abandoned him. Growing frantic, Pyralis shifted to a dragon and flew across the burning land. He would find her no matter what...and there she was.

His love, his world, was there on the ground. No, she wasn't just on the ground, she was feeding the ground with her blood. Anna was covered in her own blood and writhing in pain. The dragon felt his world shatter. His heart felt like it was dying within him. Quick as lightning, he was in human form and holding his dying love to his chest. "Pyralis," She coughed up blood and had to pause and continue in the manner several more times. "I, you...you monster." Her eyes. His loves eyes had turned hard. This couldn't be his Anna. "Why? I gave you everything. Look what you've become, a hideous beast." No, she wouldn't say this to him. It was then that he noticed his hands. They were still tipped with claws. The man was fading and the beast was taking over.

The burning earth around him...it was his fault. He had created this chaos. The death of the land was his own fault, but more importantly. This dying woman in his arms. "Anna, please, I'm so sorry." "You've killed us all....you've...killed...me, you're...A'mael." He felt it all as her last breath left her ravaged body. All he could do was let out an anguished cry to the sky. His cry was heard through the land as that of a broken man, someone giving into the beast that would consume all.

Outside of his dreams, Pyralis was writhing in his sheets with a pained look on his face. The cry in the dream never made it to this world, but the face was enough to convey what he was experiencing in his mind. This continued for some time until a darkness left the room and red eyes snapped open. Anna.

Pyralis was out of the room the next instant.

---------------------

Annabelle came padding up to his door in her pajamas, smelling of her lavender bath. She was looking forward to a change in scenery... anything to get her mind off of Verdi. The scenario had a bad habit so far of replaying in her mind right before she fell asleep, robbing her of real peace. But, Pyralis was there, and would chase away her fears as best he could.

Just as she would chase his away, she reminded herself. Pyralis' nightmare still rang through her head sometimes; her own words, the terror he had conveyed at her words and death, his fear of becoming the beast... There were times when he referred to himself as a beast that made Anna think of that nightmare. Why Pyralis could not love himself as she did she did not know, but Anna would make sure he knew just how much she loved him, beast or not.

She sighed and knocked lightly, and whispered his name, not wanting to simply walk in for fear he wasn't decent.
As she waited, her newly bound Winnie the Pooh was lovingly held close, like a dear friend.

Pyralis, clad only in loose-fitting cotton pajama pants, opened the door. His silver hair spilled around his shoulders and his scarred chest was just the same as ever.

He had already known it was Anna and smile spread over his face seeing the book she held close to her. "Good evening my love. You smell lovely." He noted this as she walked into the room. Shutting the door behind her, he pulled her over to the bed with him, and settled them under the warm covers. Extra blankets had been thrown on the bed just for her; the man was far from needing them.

Anna's mind was still preoccupied and spinning far too much to be of any use for reading. The book was more like a teddy bear or blanket... just comfort. The real comfort however was being enveloped in blankets and warm, warm arms after such a chilly day.

As they began releasing the tensions of their day through relaxation, Anna had to look over her dear Pyralis. So full of scars, but so handsome. And his hair, all wild out of it's leather strap. In the dark, his markings could be faintly seen. What made them like that? she wondered, thinking of the first night they kissed. They'd glowed then, too. And then Verdi came into her mind, and all pleasant thoughts had to be forced.
"Right now," she whispered in an effort to regain them, "You look so handsome."

He sensed her sudden shift in thoughts and growled playfully in response to her comment, hoping to help. "Come now, I'm hardly dressed." Pyralis grinned and nipped at her ear, then kissed it softly. They both seemed to have a basic understanding of just how far they would go for the time being. It had been established via mental link. He would never push that point and just now his attempts were only to steal her thoughts to matters far from Verdi's death. "You, dear Anna, are looking beautiful tonight." The only light in the room at the moment came from two lamps on either side of the bed. It cast both the man and woman in a warm glow.

Anna blushed and laughed as he nipped and kissed her ear. He truly was a dragon under all that fine muscle and skin, and his gentleness was so unlike anything she would expect from the race. Pyralis was always proving himself a wonder to the elf.

"I thank you, but must stand by what I said before." Light elven fingers swept through his hair as she lounged at his side, smiling gently as it seemed she always had. Everything was calm... even the light.
"Do your scars ever hurt?" she asked, moving her book to her lap so that she was no longer sitting on the poor thing. It had been through enough, even if Pyralis had it so expertly rebound.

He sighed and wrapped his arms around her, resting one hand on hers so that they both lay on the book. "No, but there is a phantom pain at times when I remember." He was old, far too old for his appearance. Anna was older as well. It came with the territory of being immortal.

Pyralis had seen much and many memories contained spilled blood. It wasn't frequently, but those memories would surface. When the did he could see it all again. Every scar that was etched into his skin came with a story and there wasn't a single detail that had faded over time. His thumb absent mindedly rubbed the top of her hand, thinking. "There have been a lot of battles." He didn't think that this would be the best topic, but whatever she wanted to talk about he would comply with. Her was was his command; her curiosity always supprised him.

Her eyes became gentle and sad for him as she listened to his voice. It was colored with something she believed to be weariness, something her own voice took on at times when the world seemed to stretch on forever. Which truly, it did.

"No doubt, love. I have told you of the one I had been in, but I have seen many terrible things as well regardless... most of my battles have been of the heart." Many beaus, many difficult situations. Pyralis was a calm and a storm in that respect, but at least Anna knew they would weather the rest of this out together.

Anna took her free hand to the side of his face, and began gently stroking. "Tell me if there is something that bothers you. Something that weighs down your heart."
He had been there for her, and how Anna wished she could comfort him...

She had told him of her own battles. He was also sure there were many of her own battles that he did not know of. For now, there wasn't a particular battle that burdened his mind. "There is nothing right now, but if there ever is, I'll come to you right away." Pyralis gave her a quick squeeze. "You tame the beast in me, there will never come a time that I won't need you." That was the most prominent way that Anna helped him on a regular basis. Sure, he was a gentleman before her, but she kept his anger in check. No one had really tested his temper yet, but it would be far more dangerous without her around him.

"Mm..." Anna was content with that answer. It was the trust they shared and were still developing that told her his mind was at ease. That alone was good for setting her own at rest.
"You always say 'beast' as if it is something to be ashamed of," she said, snuggling further down into the sheets. She still kept their hands together upon the book. Something about that made her smile, and close her eyes in an effort to begin that fight into sleep.

"Not ashamed of, just something to be wary off. That's all." He snuggled down into the sheets with her, keeping his arms around her. "Just drift away into your dreams, Anna, and I will meet you there." Pyralis kissed the top of her head and then closed his own eyes.

It took only a few moments for the couple to drift off into dreamland. Finally, their sleep was truly restful as they lay there in each others' arms.
