Well, today has been rather interesting. Well, slightly more interesting than normal. Of course, the day started normally enough. Mengde and Kuzunohara were their usual troublesome selves, Flitch was reading in my study, Varlen was out restocking on his magic supples, Letinas was sulking in the basement, Lewin was doing some housework, while I was shifting between working on my book and telling Kuzu and Mengde to stop whatever trouble they happened to be getting into at the moment. All in all, a dull day.

Until Varlen got home.

He had his usual supplies and equipment, of course. But... he also had a feather. I know he's up to something, especially since he gave it to me as a gift. I've known Varlen for YEARS, and he NEVER gives gifts. And it wasn't like today was anything special. When I asked, he merely shrugged and said some crazy lady gave it to him. He then went on to tell me that she said it was a phoenix child, and required care to grow. Uh-huh. Right. Either Varlen's getting a bit soft in the head, or there's something else he's not telling me. Raising another kid? I love the thought, but I'm surprised Varlen brought home a potential kid. He's always whining about the children I already have, anyways.

So why bring home another? I'm surprised he didn't stuff it down a sewer drain. Ah well. It IS a pretty feather, and there's certainly something magical about it. Can't say what, though. Magic never was my strong point. So for now I'm keeping it on my desk, out of Mengde's and Kuzu's reach. I don't trust those two with anything this special. Kuzu's too reckless, and Mengde... well, he just doesn't understand. I'd trust Flitch with it if he were a little older, but he's still just a little toddler. He seemed to be quite interested in it, though. I let him take a look at it. He kept saying how pretty it was, so I might entrust the feather to him later on. After all, he's still pretty damn responsible for a kid his age. But we'll see...

hello, little journal. This is Flitch. I'm gonna write in here for the time being. This is gonna be the record for the pretty feather Varlen got. Anvion's letting me keep it and watch it. She says it's because I did a good job helping out at the library the other day, and I get to watch the feather, since I'm responsible. And that's a good thing, she says. It's a hard word to write, though. Anvion's helping me write in here too, since I still can't spell some big words. She also says that writing in a journal like this will help me spell better. That's good, because I wanna spell right and write a cool book when I get big. That'd be neat. Then I can read it to my friends. Maybe I can learn to draw so I can make pretty pictures, too.

But now Anvion's telling me to talk about the feather. It's pretty. All green with pretty gray designs on it. And it's magic. I can tell. Even Anvion agrees that this is magic. It feels nice when you touch it and... when it's really quiet, I can hear the feather make music. It's really quiet, so I can only hear it when there's no sound, but the feather is a magic music feather.

I gave it a name, too. Since it makes music, I looked up the names of famous musicians. I at first wanted to call it Mozart, since Mozart was really REALLY good with music, but I decided on Soliari. It said that Soliari was a composer, but he didn't like Mozart. I wonder why? Maybe Mozart did something bad to him. I'll ask Anvion or read about it later. But anyways, Soliari was a pretty name, lots prettier than Mozart. It sounds like a happy sun over a bunch of pretty clouds and mountains. Anvion says that Soliari's a good name. Even Varlen said that it was a good name. Well, I think he liked it. He only nodded when I told him. Varlen's kind of grumpy. But he has cool things in his room. Lots of magic things. He won't let me touch anything, though. He won't even let me in the room, most of the time. But I'm careful, not like Kuzu or Mengde. Lewin might break something, too. but Varlen doesn't like Lewin anyways. They always fight. Lewin says that Anvion and Varlen should marry. Would that make Varlen like the daddy? I've never had a daddy. I had a mommy, but she disappeared. I miss her. Anvion's my new mommy, though. She's a good mommy. I know that if Soliari grows up (and Varlen says it might), Anvion will be a good mommy to him... or her.

Flitch again. Anvion says I've been doing a good job of watching over Soliari, so I get to keep writing in here. I'm happy. My writing isn't that good yet, anyways. But I know that if I work on it a lot, my writing will get better! And when Soliari gets bigger, I'm gonna teach him to write. And read. Reading is really important. I've already taught my friends Ani and Gil how to read. It's fun helping people learn how to read. Anvion says it's because I'm smart and good-natured. I wonder what good-natured means. It sounds like nice. Oh well.

Anywyas, Soliari hasn't been doing too much, except for the singing. And the singing's a little louder now. Anvion says she can hear it a bit from time to time, and so does Varlen. It's weird. Varlen seems kind of interested in the feather. He even comes to my room to see how I've been taking care of it. He's kind of scary, but he gave me a smile when he said I was doing a good job keeping an eye on Soliari. It was weird. I've never seen Varlen smile before. But he looks a lot less scary when he smiles. Maybe I should tell him to smile more.

But... back to Soliari. Not much, like I said. I hope Soliari gets bigger soon. It'd be good having a brother or sister to play with. Kuzu's bothers me, and Mengde's too focused on his army. it gets boring playing army all the time. But I'm not saying Mengde's mean. Mengde's nice. But I dunno... he's older than me, but acts younger. Much younger. Anvion says it's because Mengde's a Porcelain and thinks different than us. I dunno why. Maybe Porcelain are all weird like him? I dunno. I'll ask Anvion some more later. And I'll ask her if there's anything to do with Soliari. It's hard trying to write stuff about a little feather...

Well, this entry's going to be short, since there's been nothing special with the feather and Anvion says I should ramble about the family less. Anyways, Soliari's been pretty much unchanged since my previous etry. It still sits on my desk and sings. I've been asking Varlen what to do with it, but he just shrugs now. And Anvion's been busy writing some book, so she can't help me out much on Soliari, either. Hmm. Oh well.

I've been taking Soliari out and arount he house lately. It seems to like bright places, and it really liked it when I played the piano a bit. I'm no good at it, but Soliari seemed to like it. It sang louder, at the least. I've been reading to Soliari, too. It gets quiet when I read, but I think it's because it's listening. I wonder if Soliairi likes what I read it...

Oh dear. Flitch hasn't updated the journal in a while, I'm afraid. I always forget that despite his intelligence, he's still just four years old and can have the attention span of any regular kid. Oh well. I'm not too bothered. He's done quite a good job taking care of Soliari. He talks to it every day, reads to it, brushes it... it's really amazing how mature he's been about it. But I suppose I'll take over the writing again. Anywyas, there's been little change in the feather. It sings almost non-stop, which is all well and good, but it's starting to drive Varlen nuts. He's not much for singing.

However, I'm surprised at the amount of interest he's placed in Soliari. Usually he just ignores all the kids, unless they bother him too much. But... he keeps popping in and out to see how Flitch is doing with Soliari. It's kind of cute, really. I think he's doing it because he brought Soliari home and is just softening up way more than he'll admit. ^.^ Now if only he'd... waaaaaaaitaminute. I'm not writing THAT down. Lewin would rejoice if I did and harass Varlen all that much more. Scratch that.

Short update. Been busy, since I just got two new kids- Amaris and Walter. They're good kids, but a huge handful. Ugh. Double diaper duty. The other boys are helping out immensely. Flitch has been keeping a good eye on Soliari, but says that there's nothing new with him.

Again with the slow updates. Sheesh. Oh well. I've been busy. We all moved to a larger house now that I can AFFORD it (especially since I can demand money from Varlen, heh heh heh), and lo and behold, Soliari's grown! He's quite a lovely little boy, I must admit, too. He's so quiet, though. Never utters more than two or three words at a time. He's kinda skittish, too, but I think it's because he's well... not a feather anymore. He's just now getting used to interacting with everyone and everything.

He's TERRIFIED of Letinas. When I had to help him move all his stuff over to the basement in the new house, Soliari screamed when he first set eyes on the vampire before running upstairs and shutting himself up in his room. I have NO clue what set him off like that. Letinas really isn't all that scary. 'course, I've known him for about 10-15 years now. But Soliari doesn't know him. Hell, Letinas almost never leaves the basement. Maybe that's why. Ah well. No matter what the cause was, he was in his room all last night and today. s**t. He's still in there, most like. Weird kid. Ah well. I'd best be going up to talk to him, then...

Hello. Soliari here. Anvion and Flitch have been writing in here about me, and now that Anvion's taught me how to write, she says I should continue to write in here about every week or so. That doesn't seem to be too much of a problem. I can do it before I go to bed. Or when I wake up. I'll have to think it over when the best time would be.

Now, what to write about... I'm not sure. Anvion and Flitch say that I used to sing all the time as a feather. Did I? I don't remember all to well. Should I remember? I don't know. I don't know any other Hououzas, so It's so hard to say. Perhaps Anvion (she refuses to let anyone call her 'Mom') can take me out with her someday. Just so long as I can avoid the basement...

There's a monster in the basement. Really. He's got white skin and mismatched eyes and long purple hair. He's so frightening. Anvion says he's safe and won't hurt anyone, but I dunno. He's so creepy. I'm always afraid that he'll come and get me at night. Anvion says it's silly of me to think that, but still... he's so frightening...

And of all of Anvion's kids, I think I like Flitch the best. Anvion says that there's no surprise there- he's just the type almost everyone can get along with. He's really nice. REALLY nice. And smart. I wanna be smart like him. He's still so little, but he seems to know a ton of stuff. He says he learned it all from books. Maybe I should read a lot like him... Hmm...

It seems I've forgotten this. My apologies. However, things have been... strange. Flitch grew. Kuzu has run off. Varlen now has a baby girl to raise, and is rarely seen here. It's odd. So much change, in so little time. Too much than what I'm comfortable with. The only thing that ever seems to resist change is Mengde. He's always so small, so quiet. Yet he talks. He doesn't utter any noises, but... he talks. In my head. It was scary at first, but now it's... comforting. Odd, huh?

Anyways, I've been rreading some. Trying to be smart like Flitch, I guess. But I've been on the piano downstairs more often than not. Like Mengde's silent talking, the music is comforting. Very comforting. I feel I can shut out the world while playing. Anvion seems impressed, but... it's just so natural. She says I should get a job playing when I get older...

Oh dear. Has it already been a month? Well, almost a month. And so much has happened! Varlen has proposed to Anvion. They're to be married, though a date has yet to be settle. How odd, right? But... I'm glad for them. Really. Marriage is supposed to be happy, so I'm happy for them.

Mengde's been spending more and more time with me. Am I his favorite? I thought Flitch was. But Flitch is usually off at the library these days or something. I never follow him. People scare me. He smiles and says I shouldn't be scared, but... people scare me. There are always so many of them! And they're usually so tall and frightening. I don't like them. Yet Flitch always laughs gently and points out that we live in a large house with a large family. That's different though, I think. They're not frightening like pople. Well, except for the monster in the basement. I still lock my door at night to keep him away.

Again, this journal has slipped from my mind. I only found it this morning while cleaning my room. I'm afraid I've let it get a little messy. But that's okay. It's supposedly kind of normal for a kid to have a bit of a messy room, right? Even though our household is far from what you would call normal. After all, we don't have two people of the same race in the house. Well, Anvion and Varlen are both elves, but they're so different from each other it's hard to think of them as the same race. I suppose Walter and Amaris are the same race too, but again... they're so different. We call them 'twins' despite their differences, however. I believe it's from that they're the same age. Oh well. Our house is still odd. But I think it's a good odd.

And yet, despite a big family... I'm beginning to get kind of lonely. I don't know any other Houozuas. Flitch is the only Sin'aeis in the house, but he seems to have a million friends. They're mostly younger than him, but still. Walter and Amaris have each other, and sometimes Flitch takes them to see other Tenjutsu. Mengde used to know other Porcelain, but they've all seemingly vanished. I don't know if he's aware of that or not. He seems to have the mindset of a toddler. Lewin, the cupid,is an adult, so e can leave whenever he wants to see other cupids. Same with that monster Letinas when he wants to see another vampire. Kuzunohara... well, he's run away. I often wonder where he's run off to. Even though he wasn't very nice, I hope he's happy wherever he is. And then there's me.

Perhaps I should go out and look for others like me. But the world is so big... and I'm so small... I don't even know where to begin looking. Maybe I can ask Flitch to come with me. He's a bit smaller than me, but he's a lot braver and smarter. He seems to know everything there is to know about everything. It's amazing. He's always got an answer for everything, so I think it'll be good to have him with me. If we get lost or something, he'll find a way out.

Now I'm starting to get excited. I've never been this excited before. As soon as Flitch gets back from the library I'm gonna ask him. I know there are lots of scary people in the world, but just once I wanna see another Hououzua. So I'm certain I'm not the only one of my kind left, like Mengde is. It's silly, I know. But I just want to know...

Six months. Has it really been that long? I suppose I shouldn't have neglected this, but I have done much, and have even been on Anvion's home continent of Toril. It was a fascinating place, really. Yet at the same time it is perhaps the most frightening place that I know of.

You see, Toril is a land like something out of a fairy tale-- it has castles, and knights, and fine ladies, and elves, dwarves, gnomes, terrible monsters, tales of adventure, and more. Yet the land is so... so... backwards. They have no electricity, none of those comforts that Gaia has to offer, and worst of all, the people seem so intolerant. Where we went, the humans only seemed to like humans, elves, and dwarves. When we went to live with Anvion's family for a few weeks, the elves only liked other elves... And even then they only like certain elves.

Yet most of us managed to get away with being considered as one of the few 'good' races on Toril. I managed to hide my wings easy enough, and Flitch just easily passed off as an elf from the sea. Apparently he looks a lot like them. Mengde was a baby, but we couldn't hide Amaris' wing, so he had to go as he was. Walter cpassed off for a human well enough, too. Varlen, on the other hand, had to use magic to make himself flook like a 'regular' elf. It's really sad if you think about it. Almost all of us had to hide ourselves in order to get by without attracting the rage of the people. That's why I like Gaia better. Here we can just go as who we are, and not get dark looks, or chased through the streets, or have rocks hurled at us. I'm never going back there. NEVER.

And the elves were even worse, if such a thing is possible. Anvion warned us they'd be a little distrustful, but honestly. I've never seen such arrogant and xenophobic people in my life! I'm glad Anvion's nothing like them. They tolerated us all because Anvion has adopted us, but I never saw them smile at us. Not once. And Anvion's parents were worse thant he rest! They didn't smile at her or tell her how proud she was of taking in children. Instead they lectured her about how she was a disappointment and how she should marry some nice elven boy and all that. But she IS getting married to an elf! But she didn't tell them about Varlen. I asked her why, and she said that dark elves like Varlen are one of the most feared and hated races on Toril. So why did she come back with him? I don't get it. All she said was that she missed home.

So in short, Toril was a pretty place, but full of not-so-nice people. If the people were nicer I'd like to go back, but until then I'm quite happy in Gaia.
