It all depends on what your making. If its something like a shirt or whatnot, then yes, if its your first time, its hard.
But if you are making a small-ish not very complex plushy, then it shouldnt be too hard. My first plushy was a mac and cheese noodle for my friend XD and since its obviously not hard, i had to trouble...
It all depends on "how used" the sewing machine really is. If you like sewing, you should really think about getting a nice, new one. If your gonna use it, why not go for the best you can afford.
Pointers. Look around for patterns on the internet. they shall help you on your way to making your own. X3 Good luck!

My sewing machine is 30 years old, works perfectly and has never been serviced... so I can vouch for second-hand machines (although I'm confident of the history of mine, as it was my grandmother's). Just do your homework so you know what you're looking for!
There are also sewing machines designed for beginners who don't want to spend a lot of money. They don't have all the features of a more expensive machine, but you can always upgrade later if you decide sewing is your thing. If I find a link for one I'll post it here, I think I've seen them for around $100?
Sewing itself isn't hard, especially by machine - once it's threaded, you press a pedal and you're off. Like Jill-kun said, it depends on what you're making!
