how would it be a blow to religion, we've cloned sheep, how will this be all that much different? Honestly I hope we cannot create life, because knowing us we will make it into a weapon of war. Entire manmade species warring for as long as they exist is something we really don't need right now. Also, we are creating something that life might grow out of... what created the something that we grew out of?

Also I did not vote because this is not a yes or no question, I do not know if he will succeed but that was not an option.

In my opinion, it would be a blow to religion since man has done what only deities -depending on your religious beleifs- have accomplished before, the creation of life where there previously was none. From this point, you only need to combine the knowledge gained from cloning, and eventually we will be able to create beings. Then, It's only left to the imagination of people. A prime example of what one could do with this knowledge would be Jurrasic Park, we possibly could create dinos. Or as you said, create soldiers which seems to be proabably the first thing people would focus on. Also this is somewhat different from cloning because all your doing in cloning is replicating DNA, which in turn creates life itself, not creating a sepreate, individual molecule.
As far as the question, if you were to wager on the outcome of this experiment, would they be a ble to create life now, or are we still too far off?

I never forgot it, I did say "if so". I'm just being optimistic and hoping the experiment is a success, which is quite a rare thing for me. I'm usually the pessimist.

I can agree on that! But nah, thing about my viewpoints is that they usually take the uber-liberal contreversy side, yet I support the death penalty. While your viewpoints take the opposite of that on the spectrum usually. But hell, opposites attract!

I also think religions will take this in stride. This just adds a bit of fuel to the evolution vs creation debate. (if you can call that a debate)
people who believe that humans were created whole, more or less in their present form, probably don't care about a little proto-cell that as a technicality of scientific definition, carries out the necessary functions to meet the definition of life.
Personally,I think this is wicked cool! Kinda scary, but cool none the less. we are one-step closer to consumer end nanotechnology and terraforming mars with artificial bio-forms! WOOT SCIENCE!

Why would a blind cave salamander living many miles down in a cave where there is no light develop cells that are sensitive to light? It just doesn't make sense. Essentially its the concept of the match needs someone to strike it before the flame begins.

Thats cool. A more than reasonable way of meshing the two ideas.
Humans have domesticated plants and animals and have manipulated life and genetics via breeding schemes for ages. I cant think of any religious people who were tripping over this. I see biotech as a logical extension of this idea

I Dun think it would blow the lid off of Religions, but like Twizted Humanitarian said, we already cloned sheep, and there are still religions today.
