Jen's story
November 24, three bodies found in a back ally drained of blood. Only wound found was three puncture wounds on victim's wrist. Nothing was missing from the victim's property and not a single drop of blood spilt on the ground.
"Disgusting." Detective Berson looked away. "What kind of person would do this?" The newbie asked. He looked up and Berson shook his head. "No person did this." He watched as she emerged from the shadows. Mirror sunglasses shielded the eyes that weren't meant to see the sun, but from her red brown hair he knew who it was. "So what do you think it was, Jen? Vampire?" "Vampires have two fangs not three." She pointed out while he reminded him self not to be drawn in by her voice. Even if they fought for humans Moderators were Night Beings and he would never trust a Night Being. "V-vampires aren't real." The newbie was distracted by her voice, and the foolish kid was starting to annoy Berson. "What happened to your old partner Detective?" She wandered over the bodies then turned when she realized he hadn't answered. "He was killed on the job last week." Berson finally said. "I'm sorry." She reached out to pat his arm but let her hand drop instead. Even she knew the last thing Berson wanted was to be comforted by one of her kind. "I'm glad you are safe though." Berson nodded. The Moderators had come to respect him and he knew they had his back if he would let them. "What is it?" "I'll have to run it by Tai, there are quite a few tri-fangs." She stared at the newbie and Berson felt himself flush with anger. "I'd better leave before he is to far under my spell. Good day Detective." Then she was gone.

"W-who was that? Another detective?" Newbie glanced up at his scowling superior. "She was an angel of death. Welcome to the night squad Newbie." "Night squad?! So it does exist? And vampires are real!" "Don't get so hyper Newbie, most vamps would tear your heart out. They aren't the sexy women you see in horror flicks." "And the girl who was just here?" Berson had to breath slowly, reigning in his anger. He forced him self to remember that Newbie didn't know. "Jenifer is.... Jen is a Moderator." "Moderator?" "A vampire judge." Newbie's eyes widened in wonder. "I know it seems like a fairy tale but it isn't." "But-" "Listen and listen good kid, even the most civil night being will attack you if it gets hungry." As proof Berson pulled down his collar to reveal the delicate scars. "Night beings can't be trusted, that's why we have the night squad. Now if you'll excuse me I need some coffee." With that Berson left the stunned new guy.

Jen watched the world from atop a steep roof. The sun beat maliciously against her as it set. Finally the cool darkness swept around her and she could remove her sunglasses and see the world clearly. It was then that she realized where she was, in front of HIS favorite cafe. As if called by a secret wish, he drove into the narrow parking lot and then went into the tiny shop. "Sam." Jen closed her eyes against the flood of memories. She stepped off the roof and landed gently at the cafe's open door. "Hello Detective, the usual?" The perky little waitress asked, obviously happy he was alone. "Yeah, and add some thing sweet." The waitress nodded happily then turned to find Jen behind her. "Oh... Hey Jenifer." Jen snickered as the little brat's voice went flat. "I'd like some chocolate cake." Jen requested before sitting across from Berson. "Hey." A part of her wanted to cry as he stared at her with suspicion. "Why are you here?" "I can eat anywhere I want." "You don't eat." He growled. Jen looked down at the table. "...I couldn't stay away..." She could feel his guard drop as she admitted to her weakness. "Ah Jenifer this is wrong. I can't- we shouldn't- you're not even human." It took a moment for Jen to realize the water forming on the table was actually her tears. Berson reached across the table, wanting to wipe away her tears, instead he let his hand fall to the table. "I'm sorry." "We found out what's been attacking people and the other's are tracking it." Jen informed him in a cold voice, a mask of erie calmness falling over her tear stained face. "This thing is to big for humans so stay out of it." "I can't do that." "Well try, because if you interfere in a moderators work you will get hurt." Jen paid for the cake as it arrived and left it for Berson to eat. "Damn it Jen." He absently touched the scar she gave him. As a newbie to the night squad he had rushed into what he thought was a vampire cult, and instead found his girlfriend with a wine glass filled with blood. He'd shot it out of her hand and, starving she'd attacked him. Ever since they stopped dating. He looked up at the waitress, who was smiling again since Jen left. "Can I help you?" Her voice was sweet, but after a conversation with Jen it seemed course. "Detective I was thinking that... maybe-" "BERSON!" Newbie burst into the cafe, his cheeks flushed from running. "You gatta come see this!" Berson dropped the money on the table and was out the door before Newbie was finished. "What is it." "A big snake thing and two chicks are decking it out, the girl from this morning and a girl with blue hair." "Jen and Alice, it'd do you good to remember their names." "Right!" Berson knew the image would be forever burned into his eyes, the image of Jen dying.

Jen never lost. Berson could not, would not, comprehend what he saw, Jen's lifeless body hanging from the mouth of an eighty foot snake with three fangs. It munched happily on it's meal as Alice was stuck fighting it's little minions. "Jen?.... JEN!!!!!!!!!!!!" He wanted to save her but couldn't move couldn't think. "No,no,no,no,no,no." The snake's screech pulling him back to reality. The creature had dropped Jen and was twisting in pain as black goo poured from its eye. "Get the girl Berson and I'll keep it back!" Newbie called as he shot again, taking out the other eye. In pain the snake burrowed away and it's minions were killed off by Alice. She was at Jen's side before Berson could take a step. "Thanks." Alice's voice dripped with sarcasm. "You just had to scare him off, do you know how hard it will be to catch that guy again?" She tapped Jen's body with the toe of her boot. "Get up it's gone." Jen sat up slowly, shaking her head. "I hate being bait." Berson could see the pale skin of her stomach through a cut in her blouse. "How.... it's fang went straight through your stomach." Newbie gawked at her. "She can regenerate most of her organs, as long as they aren't burned." Berson explained, feeling like an idiot for not remembering that fact. He dropped to the ground and pulled a bewildered Jen into his arms. "I thought you were dead." Without another word he kissed her, deeply, passionately. "OY!" Alice pulled him away like a pice of garbage, and in her eyes that's probably all he was. "Keep your hands to yourself detective." She helped Jen up and pulled her away. "So.... you and Jen are...?"Newbie asked. "Not together." "I might be new but I'm not an idiot." "Could you date a woman that drank blood?!" "Sure, as long as she brushed her teeth before we kissed." Then Berson punched him, hard.

"Ah Christmas, such a romantic time of year... So why am I stuck playing old maid with a computer nerd while Jen's got a date!" "Because you have a suckish personality and will never get a date." Tai ducked as Alice tossed something at him. "No throwing daggers in the house!" Lynn scolded.
Nick had to admit that inviting your bosses vampiric ex-girlfriend to a company party wasn't the smartest idea. Of course he'd never been the brightest crayon in the box. When Jen appeared he could feel his jaw drop. Red silk hugged her body and a slit ran up the side, reveling her leg with each step. "Take a picture it last longer." "Ah! Sorry your just.... wow. I think I understand Berson's problem." Jen laughed and the sound was like music to his ears. "S-shall we dance?"
Berson hated parties, of course that was because he hated crowds. He was about to leave when he spotted a splash of scarlet against the dull dance floor. Jen's head fell back as she laughed, spinning in the arms of another man. "Newbie?" Nick looked up and his eyes locked with Berson. The rage he found there was sickening. "I think Berson wants me dead." "Hmm?" Jen's gaze mesmerized him. "Let's make it so much worse." She snuggled closer and kissed him. Berson clenched his fists in anger and considered the many ways to destroy Nick.
