Ekundayo was so scared that she trembled in fright, her shaking body making tiny ripples that did war with those from the wildebeasts' hooves. She made small whimpering sounds, pathetic and weak -- she was trapped in the middle of the stream. Dayo wasn't quick enough to dodge her sure death if she tried to flee.

She had to rest her hopes on Mivu. She was sure that he wouldn't let her down! "Miivuuuu!" Ekundayo squealed loudly once more, her head thrown back as her cries reached the epitome of panic and urgency. He would try and rescue her, Ekundao was positive. But, could her older brother finder her amidst the stampeding herd? The little cub tried her hardest to broadcast her location loud enough for him to hear.

Lucky for Ekundayo, her brother did hear. She was overjoyed to see him, her heart leaping with hope. He'd come to save her! Oh -- they'd be fine! Ekundayo allowed her body to go limp as Mivu grabbed her. She melted herself with him, edging in as close as she could get to her brother's shielding body. Dayo stopped shivering, closed her eyes, and just waited for it all to end.

Even after it was over, Ekundayo couldn't move. She was frozen in place with fear; a near-death experience does not bode so well with such a young life. But Mivu provided the warmth and comfort she needed, so she leaned into him and didn't say a word.

Mivu slowly glanced up and around them, warily eyeing the entire perimeter, or as far as he could see. The wildebeest were no where to be seen. They were safe again. He had felt his sister shiver when he had first swung to protect her; the water was suddenly very chilly.

"C'mon, squirt, let's get you out of the water," he said affectionately. His strong teeth gently grabbed the tough skin on the back of her neck and began to pull her to shore. It didn't take long. As shaky as his limbs were--his shoulder was bruised, after all, and the adrenaline was gone from his veins--he easily carried Dayo onto dry land and shook himself off, nudging her to do the same.

He began to roughly lick her neck and help dry her faster. She didn't have much fat on her (why girls were proud of that fact, he'd never know), which meant she didn't have much warmth that would emit from her own body. Once they got back home, he'd make sure she was warm.

This was the soft side of Mivu, the side that only Dayo ever saw. And he would keep it that way. No one else needed to know he was such a softie inside. Despicable.

The sweet and eager-to-please little girl that was Dayo found it difficult to move, so consumed by fear and shock was she. Mivu provided fantastic support, both physically and mentally. Dayo's body began to stop shivering, thought the chilly water didn't make things any better.

Thanks to Mivu, though, the little female wouldn't be in the water much longer. She was small enough that it made things easy for Mivu to grab the scruff of her neck and haul her to shore. Dayo remained silent, her mind slow to recover from the shock of her near-death experience. She shivered now from the cold, rather than from fright. Water clung to her fur, and a cool breeze wove its way around the two cubs.

As Mivu began to lick Dayo's neck, aiding her in becoming dry and warm, the little girl leaned into her brother. She was comforted by the contact, so she shifted her body a little closer to her big brother.

Dayo, somehow, knew that Mivu would only act this way when they were alone. She felt extremely privileged to be able to see her brother at his best, and she also felt slightly proud of herself, that he was acting this way because of her. The way it had come about wasn't necessarily the best, but, Dayo was happy to see such a sweet side from Mivu.

"I'm sorry, Mivu," she said suddenly, her voice quiet and small. She couldn't look up and meet her brother's gaze, knowing that the stampede, and her near-demise, was entirely her fault.

Mivu continued to use his tongue to dry his sister, leaving her neck and moving up to her head, roughly taking off the water droplets, yet as gently as he knew how. She didn't move very much, but he didn't really expect her to.

The experience they had just shared was quite a scary one, and he was surprised that he had so calmly and coolly taken control.

He marked that as a strength.

Mivu bumped his forehead affectionately on hers, nuzzling her a little, when she softly apologized. In truth, she hadn't know what would happen if her voice had been as loud as it had. She didn't understand. And that wasn't her fault. It was his, because he hadn't thought to tell her sooner, or before they even started swimming towards the beasts. He was the one who hunted a lot with his parents (he liked the adventure and the adrenaline rush, to be honest). He was the one who knew how the animals behaved.

"It wasn't your fault," he tried to reassure her. "At least you weren't hurt."

Dayo felt herself beginning to calm down, the shock wearing away and the fear ebbing. She didn't want to stop being so close to Mivu, though. Who knew when he'd next act so soft and gentle? Ekundayo relished these rare moments with her brother, where he showed his more sensitive side. She leaned into his touch, her head moving as she slowly nuzzled her chest and shoulder.

Ekundayo was thankful that Mivu had proven himself calm and collected under pressure. Without his quick and steady actions, she most likely would be squished somewhere in the stream. Ekundayo felt like she owed her big brother, but she felt so small and incapable of repaying her debt. "I... I don't know how to make us even," she said in a small voice, turning her eyes upwards to meet his.

But she dropped her gaze quickly. The little female inspected her paws, reaching down to nose out an offending piece of muck, retrieved from the stream bed. Ekundayo was certainly not one who lusted for adventure and adrenaline. She wouldn't have a problem hunting, once she was older. But, not yet. She was too small, for one thing. For the time being, Dayo much preferred quiet and calm, to the rush of a hunt.

She was more than happy to leave that to her parents, and Mivu.

It was strange for Mivu to be so gentle for such a long time. Not that he didn't want to, but it was a strange feeling. And Dayo deserved it. She had been through something incredibly scary; he wouldn't doubt if she became simply terrified of wildebeest now. He would.
Actually, no, he wouldn't. But if he did, he wouldn't tell anyone.

He rolled his eyes at her little statement and gave her a look. One that said "are you honestly thinking about that at a time like this?" Honestly. The last thing on his mind right now was how she was going to pay him back, to make them "even" again in her eyes.

Please.
Mivu was just glad she was okay. And hopefully she wouldn't be too scarred from this.

"I think you're as dry as we can get you," he finally said with a sigh. "Let's go home. It's getting late outside anyway." He nosed her up and with a gentle, quick nuzzle, he began to lead her back the way they came.

Mivu didn't even have to tell her not to mention this to anyone. They would probably just say that they were playing in the stream, and it was fine. Nothing bad happened. Or, if they wanted to dramatize it a bit, they could say that Dayo slipped and went underwater for a second or too, and it scared her.

But he didn't even have to mention to her not to tell anyone about him being all.."nice" and stuff. He hated having his reputation to be tarnished.

He walked slowly with her towards home, and made sure she was alright and all settled in the den before he lay down beside her for their afternoon nap. After all, their little adventure had very much worn them out. And Dayo needed her sleep; she was so little. He had a tender smile on his face as his eyes closed, his body between her and the entrance of the cave.
