He groaned and plopped back onto the pillows. "Anna, you can't keep me from..."

Pyralis didn't finish his thought. She could be right. Closing his eyes, he let himself remember last night. The terror, he didn't want to close his eyes. There was that cackle...that familiar cackle. His eyes opened once more. "You may be on to something my love. If so, the question is...why and how?"

"No no, not from me, from that spirit."

Anna laid upon her stomach, propped up on her elbows so she could look at him. "Why is easy enough: to frighten you away from your work. To make your thoughts obsessed with my well-being, and to make you live in fear and regret of ever leaving home. Though, how... well, we did encounter that one spirit. Perhaps it is a lesser being who simply took an order and gave you a horrific vision. I don't know that much about them, so I can only pull at straws."

"I know I can't keep you from doing your work. But you can't keep me from worrying terribly."
How many more times she would have to heal gashes and soothe nightmares, she wasn't sure of, and honestly didn't want to know.

"It's worth thinking on. We'll both have to keep it in mind." It helped to think this through with her. She was extremely intelligent and they worked well together.

"Well, my A'mael, it is morning. I believe we have work to get done. Work that leaves you not worrying about me." Grinning, he sat up and gave her a goodmorning kiss. Just laying there was a nice notion, but not a practical one. They both had work to look over and do. It was their job afterall.

"Mm... I love you." Anna was content for the moment, just looking at her Pyralis in the morning light. She seemed to have to pull herself from a spell just to get out of bed.

"Well, you set off and get dressed then, unless you'd like a bit of coffee and waffle without eating me out of house and home." Anna grinned at him as she made her way over to the kitchen area. It was very small, but was enough to hold a toaster, a few cabinets, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker.

Sighing, Pyralis got up as well, but he shook his head. "I should get dressed and get started. I have several files I need to get started on."

He really hated to turn down more time with her, but it had to be. "I will see you later today." Wrapping her up in a warm hug, he breathed in her scent. "Stay warm, my dear Anna." Forcing himself to pull away, he flashed her a smile and then dissapeared to get ready for what the day would hold.

"Oh, I will," she said, still sleepy, but awake enough to give him a big hug back. "Have a good day. Have a wonderful day."

She waved goodbye to him with one hand while the other put a waffle into her toaster.

After eating, bathing, and dressing, Annabelle was once again ready to seize the day. The night had certainly been eventful, leaving her a little tired, but it was nothing she couldn't handle.
And so, Anna set out for her office, smiling and humming a tune from when she was a child.

Anna came back to her room, simply beaming with anticipation. Within her closet, there was a pale green dress with flowing sleeves, a dress that she had specifically made for her before coming to the Grove. She had been informed that she would need formal wear before taking this position upon herself, and so set out for the perfect dress.
Oh, how she hoped Pyralis would find her lovely in it, though he would probably think her beautiful if she wore a sack.

But before she could don the dress, Anna first set to fixing her hair in intricate braids, and all by her self. There was no one to help her, so she would just have to make due with what she was able to do herself. Which, after all those years of living, was decent enough for a grand ball at the Grove Academy.

After she set her hair, in went her earrings and on went the frail crown of elven craftsmanship, one resembling a butterfly upon her brow. It was lovely against the pale brown of her hair, though how she wished she had fair eyes. Having brown eyes was quite odd for an elf, and though she was absolutely positive she was pure in elven blood, there was no explanation for it. She was simply a genetic anomaly.

After a good deal of primping, Anna appeared absolutely breathtaking. Only a slight bit of makeup had been used, just enough mascara to give her eyelashes a full, but still natural look. A bit of eyeshadow accentuated the colors in her dress, but did not look overpowering or odd. Annabelle was ready to finally but on her dress.

It was a heavy bit of material, but she was able to set herself to rights within it. The large sleeves were a bit of a task to roll up to her wrists, but once she had looked herself in the mirror, Anna was quite pleased.

Now, she though, only Pyralis need be pleased with her, and she would feel truly beautiful, as she always did around him when he said not a word in regards to her appearance.

Dashing and truely a gentleman in his ensamble, Pyralis strode up the hallway with an air of confidence. His satin suit was a perfect fit, hinting at the well-muscled form that lay underneath. As for his long white hair, it was contained by a leather thong at the nape of his neck. The only part he was slightly worried over was the sword strapped at his side. It was in its elegent sheath made for show, but the beautifully crafted sword it held was one Anna hadn't been too fond of.

Taking a deep breath he knocked on the door, waiting for her to answer on such a formal occasion.

Anna hadn't even slipped on her shoes yet. The elf anxiously pulled out her satin flats from the closet, as she had no heels. Those were utter nonsense, she thought. Pain all night, swollen feet, and all for what, to be taller? No.
"One moment!" she called out. With a small sound of triumph, she placed the little shoes upon her feet, and very carefully walked to the door.

Upon opening it, she was breathless.

"Oh, look at you..." she said, stepping back into her room for a better view of him. "Pyralis, you're a dream!"
They even looked like they were going together, with the same style of ethereal dress in soft, detailed fabrics. A prince was her immediate thought, though she wondered how he held her to be.

He smiled at her compliment, but he shook his head. The man was dazzled by the beauty of his love, his angel. "Anna..." There were no words to describe her beauty. Red eyes smoldered with a passion. Controling himself, he gave her a passionate, but measured kiss. Pulling back, he shook his head again. "I would keep you to myself, A'mael, but it would be an utter crime of selfishness to keep your beauty from the other ball attendants."

Recovering himself, he offered his arm. "My lady?"

Anna blushed from his kiss. Lucky for her that he was one to temper his emotions or she would have quite a handful to deal with. Gently she pulled away to set things to right in her room before they would leave.
"Well, I certainly didn't frustrate myself to pieces over my hair just to stay at home," she laughed.

After fetching her small bag and shoulder wrap, Anna took his arm, ready for the ball.

"Yes, let us go. I'm sure we're being missed right now."
Smiling as if nothing else in the world could please her more, Anna and Pyralis left for the ball.

----

It had been a physically numbing journey back to the room.

Because Anna had not wanted anyone to see her unwrapped and covered in a dark stain, she had taken a route right through the snow and trees of the grounds. Had Pyralis been there, he would have scolded her terribly for her conscious self-neglect. He would have wrapped her himself, or carried her, or some such nonsense. But, he had not been there. She had made that journey alone in the fashion that she saw fit, and it was enough to get her back again to this place of some comfort.

The door was opened, and with her numb fingers, Anna flicked up the light switch, sending everything into illumination. How strange everything looked then to her then as she stood in the doorway. How separate she felt from the rest of the world, even from this bit that was her own. But, wasn’t that the way this world was supposed to feel? Her, an elf, in a human’s world? Anna felt so lost, that even the short journey to the bathroom was done as if through a mist.

Once inside, she turned and locked the door. It was time to begin the process of returning back to life... or something like it. First, her shoes came off. They were not stained, just wet with snow. She could keep those, she reasoned. Next off came her jewelry, which she set carefully upon the counter by her sink. It was all still bright, and even more so with the droplets of melting snow catching the luminescence from her bathroom lights. Did she look as lovely, she wondered, with the snow clinging to her hair?

Impossible. What a stupid, vain thought.

During this steady dismantling of her Ball image, her eyes never met the image of herself in the mirror. Had Anna the strength, she probably would have shattered it upon a foolhardy impulse just to avoid it or escape knowing it was there anyhow.

Finally, her hand reached behind her, and began unzippering and unbuttoning the back of her dress. It had been beautiful, she thought as bit by bit the back opened. When Pyralis had seen her, he had kissed her with a passion, and when they danced, the fabric had been just right for spinning. They had a dream-like night, both looking at the other with such love. What did he think of her now, she wondered, as the heavy fabric slipped from her frame and down to the tiles. Anna’s eyes looked down blankly at the rust tainting the light green, and grimaced. Was he ashamed of her? Was his mother suddenly in doubt that he had fallen for the right person? Arondis had given her blessing... was it still valid?

Too many doubts.

Once she was bare, Anna ran the shower. There was still blood upon her self where the fabric had been too saturated. It was sickening to wash it all away, but cleansing. Anna could feel a part of herself coming back with the knowledge that at least her self wasn’t covered in blood.

After everything was done in terms of self-maintenance and she was in her pajamas, Anna took up her dress and placed it in a bag. There was no point in keeping it, or trying to salvage it. No, it would just be like a constant ghost, a constant reminder of her failure. For in her mind, she had failed in a much greater way than all the others. She had been given the final chance to save a student, and she had not been able to. Verdi, regardless of the weak heartbeat that held so much promise, had died in her arms.

In her heart, Anna knew there was nothing to be done, but still, she found herself taking the bag with her dress, and going to the library. She would follow the dragon’s way, and solve her one problem, at least, with flame.
