This portion, Deuteronomy 6:4-9, is one of the more quintessential prayers to the Jewish people. It codifies the oneness of our people, our nation, our culture, and our God, HASHEM. This prayer also includes Deuteronomy 11:13-21 and Numbers 15:37-41 to reinforce the main part of Deuteronomy 6:4-9

For your convenience I will translate and transliterate the passage for all to learn from.

For added convenience someone added the whole thing on a youtube video. However it's in a different dialect than I am used to so some S's will become Ts and some of the vowels will change, other than that, same prayer.

Please not that this will contain the name of God. If you print this please show the text proper respect.

Bold capitalized text should be said in a loud voice, italics in a quiet voice, normal text in a normal voice.

SHEMA! YISRAEL! ADONAI ELOHEINU! ADONAI ECHAD!
HEAR! ALL ISRAEL! THE LORD IS OUR GOD! THE LORD IS ONE

baruch shem k'vod malkhuto l'olam va'ed
Blessed be the name of his glorious kingdom forever and ever.

Ook'tavtam al muzuzot baneekha uvisharekha.

And you shall love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words that I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them to your children and you shall speak of them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be bound before your eyes. You shall place them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

V'hayah im Shamo'a tish'm'u el mitzvotai asher anokhi m'tzaveh et'khem hayom l'ahavah et Adonai Eloheikhem ul'av'do b'khol l'vav'khem uv'khol naf'sh'khem. And it shall come to pass if you surely listen to the commandments that I command you today to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul That I will give rain to your land, the early and late rains, that you may gather your grain, your wine and your oil. I will give grass in your fields for your cattle and you will eat and you will be satisfied. Beware, lest your heart be deceived and you turn and serve other gods and worship them. The anger of the Lord will blaze against you and he will close the heavens and there will not be rain and the earth will not give you its fullest and you will perish quickly from the good land that the lord gives you. So you shall put these, my words, on your heart and on your soul; you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be bound before your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, and you shall speak them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall place them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. In order to prolong your days and the days of your children on the land that the Lord promised your fathers that he would give them, as long as the days that the heavens are over the earth.

Vayo'mer Adonai el moshe lei'mor, Dabeir el b'nei Yisrael vamar'ta aleihem v'sau lahem tzitzit al kanfei vig'deihem l'dorotam v'natnu al tzitzit hakaf p'til t'kheilet V'hayah lakhem l'tziztit ur'item oto uzkhartem et hol mitzvot Adonai va'asitem otam v'lo taturu acharei l'vav'khem v'achari einekhem asher atem zonim achareihem. Ani Adonai Eloheikhem

And the Lord spoke to Moses saying, Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, they should make themselves fringes on the corners of their clothing throughout their generations, and give the fringes of each corner a thread of blue. They shall be tzitzit for you, and when you look at them, you will remember all the Lord's commandments and do them and not follow after your heart and after your eyes which may lead you astray. In order to remember and do all My commandments and be holy for your God.

I am the Lord, your God
Who lead you from the land of Egypt to be your God
I am the Lord, your God.

Thanks Neuf! Just a random bit to add, it's a mitzvah to recite it at least twice a day, which is normally done upon waking and going to sleep.

Another tidbit of Historical information:

After the Holocaust, many Jewish children from all over Europe were displaced if they survived or didn't go to concentration camps. It turns out that the surviving rabbis would go into the churches and buildings were people were taking care of the children and would sing the Shema. As the rabbis did this, children who were Jewish would run to the rabbis and have a chance at getting reacquainted with any family (if living) or move to Israel.

Pretty neat story, eh?
