Pearls Of light
It had only been a fun game of hide and seek near the forbidden place. They knew they weren't suppose to play there, however, that was part of the fun.
"Malta!" At four years old, she still trailed behind her cousin. "We have to get back before it gets dark." There was a note of fear in that. She was remembering the story of the evil demons that come out at night and drag people to their doom. At least that's what the stories said.
"One more game." Her older cousin announced before looking around at the children that were gathered. "Okay, Maracia, you're it. Now close your eyes and count up. No peeking!"
As the girl began to count, the children scattered, "Find your own hiding place, Elysion." Malta had told her before finding a place up in a tree.
After a while, she, Elysion, wandered away looking for a hiding place. However, the place where she was had unstable ground. With one accidental step, the rocks crumbled away unable to support her light weight and she fell through a hole before being knocked unconscious.
She came to, when it was dark with water falling through the hole. It was a small space, she barely could see. It must be raining, she thought vaguely and wondered where her friends and kin were. Did they forget? What hole was this?
She tried to move, but her leg-the right one- screamed in protest at this that caused her to yelp and whine at the pain. Becoming more aware, she felt around and felt a bone of sorts.
An unmarked grave? An animal trap? She couldn't tell because it was so dark. Her eyes drifted up trying to see the entrance of where she fell, a near perfect circle above, smaller rocks still tumbling below.
If she called would anyone hear her?
She called out for help until her voice was hoarse and her nose was runny and stuffy. The storm, went on.
She was lucky, she thought now, trying not to give into panic, the water wasn't much. Maybe she could...
Trying to move her leg again, she only found that she was trapped. It had landed on the right leg and was far too heavy for her to push it off. Far too painful.
Maybe she should give up?
She didn't know when, but she had fallen asleep-amazing thing that was- shivering cold. She needed to get home to her Mama and Pa. They had something important to tell her. They said so before she went out to play after the studies.
She should've never went out to play.
That's what she dreamed of. She dreamed of home. Safe, warm, and happy.
She was rather unhappy when she awoke and found it just that, a dream. Not only that she was hungry. Only looking up told her it was morning but she felt sleepy still, it was tugging at the edges of her consciousness. Maybe in a little while after she napped she would think of something to do.
Just a short nap.
Elysion wasn't sure when she started coughing. In fact, she wasn't sure about much. To be honest, she had been hungry enough to eat mud (which despite most people would think it was actually good for the body for some things) which in turn had a worm in it. Normally she would've rather had it cooked, but it didn't matter right now.
She had called out again to see if anyone was close enough to hear her.
No one did.
Again she tried pushing the rock from her leg. Maybe the water had loosen the dirt from around it. Either way she tried very hard to push it aside enough that she could get her leg out. This wasn't an hour deal, but had taken all day to achieve.
Either way it had been an improvement.
By know, it was getting dark again, but she hadn't cared, if she could endure the pain, she could crawl up the sides-so she believed- and get out.
That was, of course if she didn't fall and break the other leg.
Either way, she tried scaling the sides of the slippery wet walls of mud that only gave way when she tried to climb out and fell back in-she had screamed in pain on landing on the broken leg.
In the end, she gave up again. No matter how many times she would try to crawl up, she would only fall back down. She wasn't even sure she had it in her to call out any more. She gave up on counting what day it was(the third day) and only laid there now sick as anything with a hunger to match.
Why hadn't she just stayed home?
Again, as the fever set she could vaguely hear someone out there. She could hear the sound of feet moving along. Someone was talking.
They would pass by this hole. She thought trying to muster up her lacking energy, and they wouldn't even know she was there.
But it was taking far too much energy to even stay awake, let alone call out. If this was the will of the Great Mother, as her Aunt Upendi would say, than what right did she have to stop these plans?
Far too out of her mind, she heard voices saying something. What was it? 'Someone's down there.'?
She didn't even know any more since she had, indeed passed out.
