First, please don't make this a huge debate, no flaming, etc. This is a simple question, and I just want your opinions, and hopefully, scriptures to go along with them. Thank you.
I know that God's word says that we should give 10% of our earnings to Him. But, do we have to give it to the church? Couldn't we give it to a charity instead (e.g., cancer research, child sponsoring, homeless, etc.)? Please state your reasons.

Darn good question!
I asked the same one, and people thought I was crazy. I believe that as long as we are able to at least pitch in a little bit, we should help people who are in need if we possibly can.
If your church happens to help people like that, then it makes sense that we tithe to the church :]
That's just what I think.

I prize charity along with loyalty and friendship and I do what I can what I won't do is give money to any church youth program...sure if a church is dedicating funds to a charity I will donate directly so ya I would think giveing to a charity would be the same as donating to a church

Thanks for the responses. I would like some more input on this. I've also recently been wondering something else: Which should be done first: giving your 10% or paying off a debt? I know the bible says about forgiving someone before worshiping or something to that effect, but does the same principle apply to finances?
