Ilphdar Eilslyl i read in a book once that aperantly an alchimist was said to have summoned a demon in the form of a big black dog to wonder all over the world. but who know, and yes i do know that an alchimist isnt a wizard or anything like that but that what the book said 3nodding anyways also i remeber me grandpa in mexico said that he was once confronted with a black dog with red eyes going home late. dont remeber the whole storie but people said he saw the devil and that was in mexico ps sorry for me bad spelling Thank you for the stories. I think I've heard the one about the Alchimist summoning one before too. This is also the first story I've been given from Mexico so thanks again. It's another dot on my map of black dogs. biggrin

I have never seen a black dog, but in a similar vein I'm curious if anyone has ever seen white dogs, my friend has described them as tall and lanky looking, not of this world. I have tried to help her find any information about such a thing but have come up pretty empty handed.
Edit: I thought I'd also mention they can be unnaturally tall or smaller, I don't know - my friend may just have a great imagination but it would be interesting if anyone else has seem similar.

In short Yes. There are reports of White Dogs that are silimar to Black Dogs, I came across them while researching. I can not find the information at the moment though.

In short Yes. There are reports of White Dogs that are silimar to Black Dogs, I came across them while researching. I can not find the information at the moment though. Actually I managed to beat some information out of Google and came up with the Cwn Annwn, white dogs with red ears of mythology associated with the wild hunt, can't seem to turn up much information besides that though. My friend never mentioned them having any red, so I'm reluctant to say it's the same. Still it's interesting non-the-less. Edit: Also found - In England, they are often called the Gabriel Hounds or Ratchets, and sometimes the Yell Hounds. Edit 2: Gally-Trot: An apparition in the form of a white shaggy dog who runs after people who run away from it. Edit 3: White dogs seem to also be referred to as fairy dogs.

Don't know about White Dogs, but I've read quite a lot about Black Dogs. I've always taken them to simply be spirits, not demons, thought I really have no way of knowing. And about them being death omens, that's not always true. I've heard stories about Black Dogs protecting people. For example, there's a folk tale about a woman who was walking back home in the middle of the night, from a party or something. She encountered a huge black dog with red eyes, which just walked with her for a while. Eventually they came upon a bunch of ragged, violent looking men (probably drunk), who then approached the woman, but the Black Dog scared them off. Once she was in sight of her house, it just disappeared. It kinda seems that it was protecting her, for whatever reason. I've also heard stories of Black Dogs guiding lost travelers home. I don't know, but they don't seem all bad to me.

For as many stories of Black Dogs being omens of death there's also stories of them being protectors of lone travellers. It's really made studying them tricky, I'm not sure if I'm dealing with Black Dogs or just Ghost Dogs. For example two very different stories about my local Black Dog say someone saw him (a high ranking officer in the army) and died but at the same time a local to the area said he use to see the same dog quite a lot and nothing ever happened to him (I have this story on a DVD). I think this might be one of the reason I love them so. biggrin (Sorry for late reply was ill for the last couple of weeks)
