THE FISRT LESSON OF ALCHEMY

There are many laws of Alchemy. Like the laws of Nature, the laws of Alchemy are set in stone. All laws are made to govern. The laws of Alchemy do just that. They help to govern those who practice Alchemy to help keep everything safe. When a law if broken or bent, there is much in the aftermath and the outcome may not be that which it once was thought to be. Alchemy is governed by these laws to help prevent. To protect.

Full Metal Alchemist states two laws of Alchemy:

1. For human kind to gain anything, something of equal value must be given in exchange.
2. It is both illegal and impossible to restore human life using Alchemy.

The Law of Conservation of Mass states that:

In an equation, mass is neither created or destroyed. The output is the same amount as the input amount although the form may be changed.

The Laws of Thermodynamics states that:

0. If two systems are in thermal equilibrium (same temperature) with a third system, then they are all in thermal equilibrium with each other.
1. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can be converted from one state to another.
2. Heat flows from regions of higher temperature to regions of lower temperature on its own accord. (Heat will not spontaneously flow from a cold object to a warmer object.)

Hermetics states that:

That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing. And just as all things have come from this One Thing, through the Meditation of One Mind, so do all created things originate from this One Thing, through Transformation.

Although these various laws does not state itself truly as the Laws of Alchemy, it can be looked upon and applied to. And although Full Metal Alchemist is an anime series, I saw it fitting to post it in here. For anyone who watches the series (which I personally have not yet seen...) it tells about the ignorance of man and of the consequences that it brings.

One cannot jump into Alchemy without being knowledgeable of the consequences of ALL actions for in Alchemy, one action, great or small, will and surely can change so much more than is anticipated. Even the wise are careful. The laws of Alchemy need to be remembered to the practicing alchemist for a wrong mistake, even a small one, may cost more than one can bear.

For myself, the laws of Alchemy are taken from various other laws, such as Thermodynamics and the teachings of Hermetics. However, as I continue on in my transformation, I will continue learning more about Alchemy and its various laws.

There are five tenets to Alchemy according to John Reid:

1. That the entire universe is divine in origin. Therefore Wisdom and Guidance must be sought from the source from which all creation flows.
2. That all organisms, no matter how subtle or gross they are, have within them the divine spark of life and are interrelated with each other. It is therefore our task to understand this kinship, so that we may utilize inspired knowledge to aid in our understanding of how to prepare the quintessence of our matter.
3. That all organisms are in a state of constant evolution as they continue their synthesis towards perfection. Upon reaching an understanding of tenet (2) the true work begins, i.e. , the aiding of nature by the art of alchemy to reach its highest point of perfection.
4. That humans are a part of the universe. Therefore, they are divine in origin and they can affect all organisms on all spheres of existence by their actions or inaction.
5. That humans, by understanding the basic laws that govern their beings and conversely the entire universe may learn to recognize the divine spark of vital energy in all organisms, isolate it, purify it, and manipulate it to speed up the processes of evolution.

All in all, these five roads state that: All things in the universe is interconnected. Every living thing possesses energy and life and that we all are made up of the same things but are formed differently. (I personally think that that applies to non living things as well.) Everything that has life evolves to become perfect. (In the state of driving for perfection only can we then realize our own perfection. <--- My personal thoughts.) Cause and effect rule. Regardless of whether we do something or not, it all creates a ripple effect that will reach others and affect them, living or not. What each person or each living thing does or does not do (I see non living things as well, such as rain shaping and carving out huge caverns or sand shaping and weathering away rocks.) affects everything else in a pattern that reveals with time. By learning and driving towards perfection, we may one day be able to grasp what perfection is and overcome it! (Or become it.)

(Most of everything that is stated here is either universal standard -such as the laws of thermodynamics- or my own perceptions and thoughts.)

I obey two rules in dealing with Alchemy:

1. The exchange of one for another although the quantity may differ, the quality is of equal value.
2. The impossibility of perfection allows for imperfection.

The first rule that I obey when dealing with Alchemy is that in order to recieve something, I must trade for something of the same value although I may trade more of a lesser value until it equals the same value as that which I want. Taking money for example. If I want one $100 bill, there are many ways to equal that out. I can exchange five $20 bills, or ten $10 bills for one $100 bill. I can also do $5 or even $1 bills. I can even trade four $20 bills and two $10 bills. The process states that as long as the value is obtained, it doesn't matter what is wanted to be obtained. The quantity of items, material, etc that is traded does not matter as long as the quality is the same. It can be obtained as long as I can equal out the value of that which I want to obtain.

The second rule that I obey when dealing with Alchemy is that in the process of obtaining perfection, I can be flawed for I have not yet obtained perfection. In seeking perfection, I am allowed to be flawed. I can make mistakes. And it's okay because I'm not yet perfect. On the path to obtaining perfection, wisdom, enlightenment, etc I am not yet there so I am able to not be perfect.

In regards to the second law of Alchemy according to the anime series, Full Metal Alchemist, I do believe that one life can be traded for another. A look at various cultures and religions around the world involves sacrifice. Christianity is not absent from it. Just as I believe that in order to obtain what I want, I do not need to possess the equivalent of what I want first; I do believe that in order to save a life, one can be traded in its place.

In Shamanism for example, there are animal sacrifices to keep spirits from feeding off the life of people. It is an exchange and one life is always equivalent to another life. As Hammurabi once said, "An eye for an eye!" biggrin To preventy human life, yes, but to restore...I do not yet know. (That, I am not going to dwell into!)

The first lesson is to learn the laws of Alchemy. Although I personally did not obey any law that I have posted but my own, I do feel that each learning Alchemist must find their own paths. Those are my two guidelines. Anyone can have just one or even fifty guidelines! These are the two that I follow when dealing with Alchemy and the various practices that I will go through to obtain the much sought after Philosopher's Stone. It doesn't mean that I won't follow the rest. It only means that these two laws are the only two that I will constantly need to obey and follow. However many laws and rules that I obey and follow, I do not yet know. It is adventure that I cannot tell what is ahead until I am there! wink

So everyone who wants to practice or is reading this, please keep in mind that everything that I post may or may not apply to each individual for this is my own and is shared as knowledge. My two laws may or may not only apply to me. I do not know the effects of such things on others. I only know the effects that apply to me. Also, when I do start posting up my experimentations, please keep in mind that if you do follow and do your own experiment, I will try to have alternatives for I do want everyone to accomplish what they are wanting to have accomplished in Alchemy dealings. I am going to try the same experiment various times with different ingredients (like making a cake, lol.) to see the results. That way, if such a hard ingredient cannot be obtained, there will be an alternative with just as pleasing results! (Except those that blow up in my face. Don't try those! lol. :p)

I wish everyone the best of luck and as soon as I keep going, I'll post up more! smile

The series, and the movie for that matter (which takes place directly after the series) are absolutely phenomenal and will forever remain my favorite anime.

Very well written, Kris, but you forgot a whole ONE thing, which is really damn impressive:

There is a path that one much follow when PERFORMING alchemy, a path that must always be followed unless there's some grand ability or otherwise motion that allows you to skip one of the three steps, like in Maria's case.

Bare in mind, you MAY stop at the second step, though it's usually frowned upon (it was the signature technique of the "rogue villain" in the series, and the main character did it once as well) as it leads only to death.

I. Assess the item and memorize the components of said item.
II. Deconstruct the item (Keeping in mind what Kris said: Energy and even matter are never lost, only displaced)
III. Reconstruct in to the desired new item.

For example, say you have the following ingredients (this I learned in high school):

Oxygen (65)
Carbon (18 )
Hydrogen (10)
Nitrogen (3)
Calcium (1.5)
Phosphorus (1)
Potassium (0.35)
Sulfur (0.25)
Sodium (0.15)
Chlorine (0.15)
Magnesium (0.05)
Iron (0.0004)
Iodine (0.00004)

With those components, you could create a human being and really piss off God. But, you'd need the exact amount of each component (the numbers in the parenthesis represent how much of each component is in the human body, by weight) or you'll get some ******** up monstrosity. Scientists every day try to replicate human beings.

So, I basically just laid out step one, given I just analyzed the entire human body for you. So, the next step would be to find...well, let's say a human! At that point, you'd use proper methods via transmutation circles to deconstruct that body, and with that same circle you'd pull it back together, letting the transmutation circle act as a table for the puzzle you're now solving as you put the pieces where you want them.

There's a bit more to it than this, but given it's one of Kain's specialties, I don't want to give EVERYTHING away. I figured I'd help Kris a bit in his contribution, though.

This is a rather touchy subject for most. The idea about the circles is border-line spiritual, or magick-related to some, and I view that saying the circles are necessary is a controversial issue. Not to mention the magick thing, but this RP was pretty weird to begin with, so...I mean, I think science can explain some to most of it, but not why the circles? Just as much as it can't explain runes. I think I could say enough about it, but there's no real science to it. Bleh...Anyway, onto other matters.

Not really a matter, but a thought I had. When you create a human body, where does the soul come from? I mean when you really get down to it, I think it possible to make a human. Just a regular human, that's right, from the base components. You see, when a man and woman love each other very much... (trails off) ...And that's how babies are made! So I view it to be no different than providing the ingredients like any other way. What makes it so special aside from the code that's hammered into us, called our genetics? It's apparently possible to simulate. So...I mean really? When and where does the soul come into play? --What's it got to do with your parents? Maybe the soul is something you develop for yourself, by yourself, or from your surrounding and your experiences? Why can't a 'monstrosity' have the same experiences? It's entitled to it. It had no choice in its birth or existence, same as babies...why's it so different? Why less fortunate than the rest?

As far as God goes, we've pretty much blown him off already. If there was ever a reason to worry about his temper, I'd say we're already ********, because we've already tread ALL IN IT. All the stuff that goes on these days--science, and the likes. Most notably pertaining to the subject at hand, Abortions, Adoptions, and Artificial insemination. Aren't we already messing with that balance there? We're creating lives not in the usual way. For that matter, also are we taking them away. Think a little deeper, I'm sure we can find many topics containing millions of examples each of how we've pissed on the stone that God's laws were written on. (with that much piss, I guess it just eroded away the carvings, huh? Set in stone my a**!)

Sorry for that. I was up all night, pretty tired when I wrote this. Probably didn't even finish, but I wanted to throw the point out there--maybe open this discussion for all. With permission, reply, otherwise and either way, I'm open to PM if someone wants to discuss it.

The Creatures of Alchemy: Homunculi and Chimeras

Alchemy, of course, is more or less the work of God in that it's all about creation. Since the dawn of time, in one way or another, man has always performed and tinkered with alchemy, and thus we were given new inventions. Most people tend to associate alchemy with potions, or even further, simply pharmaceuticals; combining potions or concoctions to create brand new ones. People also tend to associate alchemy with transmutation circles, which more or less begins to reference it as a black magic. But, needless to say, it's obvious alchemy's been used to create some amazing medicines, and other valuable tools in the world.

Then, there are the alchemists that can't handle simply doing God's work, but must spit in His face while they're at it. This is in reference to the creation of two beings that can only come to be through man's own sick intentions, through the art of alchemy: The Chimera, and the Homunculus.

The Chimera

When most people think of a chimera, their minds are drawn more towards the mythological beast composed of a lion's head, a goat's body and a serpent's tail. There are endless variations of the creature, and in the end each of them could essentially be correct. A Chimera is nothing more, and nothing less, than several creatures fused together in to one new creature. The creation of such creatures has been identified to need transmutation circles and a great deal of practice and wisdom. Chimeras are highly frowned upon, given they destroy God's work and turn it in to man, and beyond that the creature usually ends up suffering a great deal of pain given they were formed improperly, if there even were a proper way. True alchemists always put it on themselves to put the lives of these creatures to an end, not for anyone's sake but that creature's and the pain they suffer.

The Homunculus

And so it was said that God created Man in His likeness. And so it was said Man created the Homunculi in their image. And so it was said alchemists became Gods in their own sense. Though, unlike Chimeras, the Homunculi come with a whole set of rules and restrictions to them, regardless of ability and wisdom.

-The Homunculus can only be made using the dead.
-The Homunculus will take the form of that dead person.
-The Homunculus will be born with a Ouroboros (*I).
-The Homunculus will take a new personality/soul (*II).
-The Homunculus cannot be made without a personal item of the dead being's nearby, and the Homunculus will be rendered powerless when near this item (*III).
-The Homunculus can function without this, but in order to function properly and to it's full extent, the Homunculus must feed on life and souls to maintain itself.
-The Homunculus cannot use alchemy.

*I: The Ouroboros is a tattoo, or marking, engraved in to the flesh of the Homunculus that identifies it as such. The creator or the Homunculus can also control the Homunculus using this alchemic symbol.

*II: Though the soul will be new, it will have the old soul's memories. The Homunculus will not understand them, nor the dreams they will be cursed with, but if their will is strong enough, a Homunculus can rid itself of it's old personality completely, or just the opposite, in can become who it once was.

*III: The item can be anything from the bones of the person to a personal trinket. Either way, this is the item they will be born from, and thus the item that will end them. The item is usually kept on the creator.

The reasons for someone creating a Homunculus can vary, but most commonly people wish to bring their loved ones back from death, or wish to create an army. Sadly, what they create, at least in love's case, is never what they want. In the case of an army: The Homunculus does indeed have free will, and mistreating it can lead to one wrong move being your downfall. Most Homunculus are also born with specific powers, usually dealing with exactly what they were created for. For example, Fullmetal Alchemist featured the following Homunculi created by Dante:

I. Lust; able to extend fingers which were as sharp as a blade. Her Ouroboros was on her chest.
II. Gluttony; could eat anything given acidic saliva. His Ouroboros was on his tongue.
III. Envy; could shapeshift and had super-human strength. His Ouroboros was on his lower back.
IV. Pride; he could see all possible outcomes of every action, and in the end, read someone's movements before they would happen. His Ouroboros was on his left eye.
V. Sloth; she could become water. Her Ouroboros was under her left shoulder.
VI. Greed; he could fiddle with the amount of carbon in his body to harden it in to an impenetrable material, most likely diamond. His Ouroboros was on his hand.
VII. Wrath; could use alchemy given his right arm was that of an alchemist's, as was he left leg. His personal powers were Godly strength and agility. His Ouroboros was on his right foot.

Known Chimeras in FoM:
Tedd; AKA "The Beast." Kain's ultimate creation made from nearly every animal he could get his hands on, along with several different materials aside from animals. In the end, Tedd and it's lost brother, Todd, were created. Tedd was given high intellect and can communicate as it sees fit, and it's powers are nearly endless, though at the same time very limited. Unlike most Chimeras, Tedd feels no pain from it's fusion, given that Kain worked with another lost alchemist and Tedd itself to fully construct the monster.

Known Homunculi in FoM:
I. Maria - (Classified to Kris' liking)
II and III - Mother & Father. Kain used his own parent's heads, which he severed centuries back to bring them to their dooms his own self in order to make things right. Both Mother & Father have had their memories of that past life completely erased. Their powers vary quite a bit, and both are quite grotesque.
