A while ago I had a woman read my palm to see if I had some psychic abilities because my friend was supposed to help me with chakra training. (I think thats what it was called. I can't quite remember) What she told me was that in a previous life I was killed in battle. This meant that when I started opening my mind I could "remember" that occurence and go crazy. Since I didn't (and still really don't) believe in reincarnation I dismissed this. Recently, my friend and I were discussing the fact that we both have Celtic ancestry which can be traced further back to having Nordic origins (vikings). If I would take some time I could trace my heritage back through a large number of warriors.

Would it be possible for me to "remember" these things that my ancestors had done? Could that be the explanation for past life regressions? Are the memories of our ancestors somewhere within us?

I have somewhat mixed feelings on the idea of past lives. On the one hand, I see it as an extension of some Western ideas that I don't particularly agree with and on the other, I see it as a potentially valid phenomena though not in the way that most people would like to consider it as.

Because I understand the universe as a vast network of interrelations, everything is ancestral or related to you, so the idea of past lives becomes either redundant or meaningless. It also becomes somewhat meaningless because I don't see existence as punctuated by beginnings OR endings, but simply constant transformations which form a continuum. In short, there's no real distinguishing a 'current' life from a 'past' life as you're never the same 'you' that you were even a millisecond ago. The memories of our ancestors are ever within us. It's written in everything we're made of, from our DNA to every other molecule in our bodies. We're all composed of that initial star stuff that exploded and made the universe.

You can 'remember' anything you want to, really. Doesn't matter how directly related you were to it or not; at some point you're connected to everything else in the universe anyway. What matters more is to explore things that have personal meaning to you and if exploring your more recent human familial heritage interests you, just go for it!

Existence may not be punctuated by beginnings or ends but our perception of it is. I too understand that all things are in some way connected but human understanding of the universe is quite finite. I suppose what I am trying to say is that according to your view (at least in my thinking) bloodline would play an important part in remembering things that happened long ago. It gives our mind a way to tie itself back to the past.
