Although it's a detour from a larger project I'm working on (I've hit a few snags and also wanted the opportunity to familiarize myself with the materials a bit), I thought I'd share my first steampunk creation with y'all and hopefully get some tips and feedback.
Behold, Capitain Nemo's Thumbdrive:

(please let me know if the images are stretching the page; I'd be happy to link offsite instead, if that's nessicary.)

Materials:
1 2G Sony thumbdrive
1 cheap clock (torn apart for the gear)
1 strip of brass (1/4" wide, approx 1/32" thick)
1 strip of aluminum (3/4" wide, very thin - maybe 1/64")
3 brass colored paper fasteners (4 if you count the one I killed)
black nailpolish
gold nailpolish
embroidery floss

The black portion of the thumbdrive is meant to look like cast-iron, although it turned out a little too shiny. If anyone knows how to improve the texture/finish, please let me know.
The rest, I think, is fairly self explanatory.
I was thinking of trying to dress up the back a little bit with a manufacturer's label (IE:
Quote:
PATENTED
Sony & Sons inc.
est. 1829

with some nice victorian flourishes and such). I've tried at a label a few times, and will definately have to try a few times more before I get one of sufficient quality. The label will be (if there is one) approximately 1/2"x3/8" and naturally, writing that small and making it look like an old fashioned type face is just a wee bit challenging, although my last few tries have gotten a little better.

It looks lovely! Very impressive, and lots of detail for such a tiny thing!

For a cast iron look, I've seen craft paint that mimics a cast-iron finish. I remember seeing it at Target, I think?

Thanks. I'll definately have to look into that paint. I wonder if I'd have to remove the nailpolish before I used it, though. I guess I should worry about just finding the stuff first.

I got two free thumb drives from my school orientation. I think I will experiment and steampunk the one, and if that works out, both. Very nice job.
