I have a deer half fursuit that I wear to the cons near here. Up until now, I've worn medeival armor with him, as shown in the picture below. But AWA is coming up in September, and I thought I'd give him a steampunk flair. He's a courier by trade, so leather satchel, of course, and maybe a pouchbelt. I'm definately going to trick out the boots. I'm thinking of adding steeltoes and chains.

Anyone have any advice or ideas for him? Things I should try?

When in doubt, add gears. Perhaps a pair of Purveyor's Pantaloons (patent to postman Paul Prescott) would do the trick? Gears around the knees, pistons along the back of the calves or over the front of the thighs, great for getting places when the airship's in the shop. And how sturdy are the antlers? It might not suit the character 100%, but the thought of a monocle hanging by a brass chain from an antler tickles my funny bone something fierce. Nice suit to begin with, by the way.

I would switch out the Rennie boots for a pair of knee-high combat boots, or wear long trousers with steel-toe shoes... and trade out the leather jerkin for a shirt, braces, and vest like this:

the pattern is Simplicity #5037, it's out of print but you can still order it from the Simplicity.com site. #2895 is still in stores, it lacks the hat and braces but has a similar vest & shirt, along with a frock coat which might also be a good look-- though you'd have to do some hardcore tailoring to fit a suit collar around the fursuit's neck. You could even enlarge the cap pattern in the first outfit, wear it over the head, and cut holes for your antlers. biggrin

(Sorry for rambling about sewing patterns-- Your costume is well-made, so I'm assuming you sew, or know someone who does.)

I agree with the previous poster about adding a monocle- your suit's head has spectacular eyes, and a monocle would really bring that out. It would be pretty simple-- they sell brass rings of all sizes at craft stores, just atttatch a length of chain to the side and stitch the ring to one eye, loosely enough so you can remove it to go back to the medieval look smile Or, make a pair of HUGE goggles.

Since your character's a courier, maybe add a rocket-pack? A holster and a ray gun? The possibilities are endless! biggrin

Update : Going good so far. Bought myself two satchels, a scarf, and a hat that looks quite dandy. Chopped the sleeves off the doublet, they were bothering me. After watching The Postman, I was inspired to go the postal courier route. Gonna really pimp it, too... gonna write a bunch of letters and give them out to people at the con, maybe use yellowed paper and wax seals and everything. So hey, if you're at AWA and see the deer, stop me and ask if I've got any mail for you.

Afraid I don't have pictures just yet. Would like some advice... I saw these kickin' cerulean blue pinstriped pants... would bring out the eye color in the mask... but do you think that'd be too many colors, what with the brown and green and beige?

Thank you both immensely for your help so far, and the patterns were very inspiring.

Picture update.
User Image
^ My leather doublet sans sleeves, an army green bag that I probably won't be using, and two hats. Also, my cat Kaylee.
User Image
^ A leather satchel, two belts, and my sword.
User Image
^ One of the hats modified to fit my deer's head. It's a bit sloppy, and I can't get the hat tilted how I want it.

^ From the side. Shows the awkwardness of the modification. Also, my kitten Reynolds.

^ A collection of stickers and other detail pieces bought from Michaels, to be affixed to various parts of the costume.

Update with photo. I've added an insignia to the hat now.
