I'm not a former percussionist, but when I was taught by our percussion section leader how to play snare he always told me to relax, so be relaxed when playing

practice like theres no tomorrow
focus on learning how to listen to the rythym and beats of a song
listen to your ipod or w/e you have and find the tempo of the song and play along with it
also practice the basics such as paradidles and diddles and double sroke rolls

yeah go ahead and play on rock band just remeber to use wrist and not arm...simple yet alot of people forget it 'case its so basic. dont try and force things and dont death grip the sticks. keep a loose grip and stay relaxed (helps you play really fast)

oh and your middle and ring finger helps you play dubble beat.

Medieval crayon
my brother told me i should get good at rock band drums first, but i highly doubt that would work.

If you mean the game "Rock Band", yes that works. Thats actually how I got into drumming (by playing on Expert all the time) and I think I've gotten very good at real drums and anyone else could, even off the drumset. It helps with rhythms a lot. There was actually a rhythm in one of our songs last year that I couldn't get worked out and then there was something similar in a Rock Band song and I figured out how to play it! There's also those drum rhythms and fils practices on Rock Band 2 and that helped a lot in game.

i agree that rockband does help ( i play it every night to work on my speed) and i suggest starting out on medium because easy is actualy harder than medium rofl and being that i'm a bass drummer during marching season (bass drums at my school have harder parts than the snares) practice, practice, practice. at times i'll be sitting in class bored and not knowingly start beating out a cadence from marching season on my desk lol (then the teacher yells at me lol)
