Hey me and a friend of mine have been thinking about starting up a scanlation group of sorts. Not the normal manga scanlation kind but rather we plan to do stuff such as children's books, commercials, guides, song lyrics, and other simpler stuff. As of right now we are at an intermediate level so we don't plan on doing anything like manga since it is much more advanced, although we can understand it for the most part we're not at the level yet to actually do a full translation. Although we will do simpler manga if untranslated or poorly translated versions are found.
Anyway now that you know what we're planning on setting up I'd like to know if anyone is actually interested in starting a group such as this with us. We do plan on starting on gaia and will expand from here. If you have any questions about the group or what we plan on doing feel free to ask or PM me. I am also interested in if anyone doesn't want to join but would actually like to have a group like this around for whatever reason (We do plan on taking random requests). It may seem like I'm trying to advertise and sorry if I am but I'm just trying to see if there is a general interest for this kind of thing.

Isn't posting scanlations of copyrighted/licensed material against the TOS?
You might have to check with that. It's entirely possible that I'm thinking about another site :S. You should be alright for song lyrics and interviews, etc, it's just stories you may run into trouble with, especially if the pages are scanned.
However, there are a lot of song lyrics translation sites out there. But it would be nice to see some translations for songs of lesser-known bands.
Other than that it sounds like a cool idea, if you will be posting the original text as well as the translated version. I've actually been looking to get my hands on some Japanese childrens' books to help practice with recognising the script, but I don't know where to start. It could be helpful for others looking for something similar.
There's also a lot of Japanese TV shows I'd love to be translated purely for entertainment purposes smile .

I was thinking about doing something that for a while with the magazine Famitsu because there's some decent stories in the issues that don't get translated anywhere else, or at least I haven't seen them translated though.
Songs are harder for me to translate and take more time because of the lack of context (i.e. lack of nouns sometimes). But, it sounds like a cool idea and I'll need something to keep fresh on my skills when I leave Japan and come back in a few years.
