"Your very welcome! Take good care of it, OK? It's not just a regular flower."
Mehndi, being a fair bit taller than Tanee, reached around the smaller girl's shoulders to put her arm on the Tabula's back and steer her back towards the entrance, where Aquinas would be waiting (hopefully). "Oh, nothing's going to wither now! Well, I mean, we might have to do something for practice, but I promise we'll put it all right in the end. Oh! Lemons are nice. Would you like a lemon too?" Mehndi flicked her wrist and a large lemon appeared in her hand which she immediately tried to force into Tanee's.
"So maybe we'll start with... huh. Maybe not. Well, we could do a primer on Rasa types... mmm. I don't know. Or just work on stamina..." Only half-talking to Tanee now, Mehndi continued to chatter on as they reached the large doors Aquinas and Tanee had come through, Aquinas standing, looking very sulky, in front of them.
Aquinas walked forward and gave Tanee a patronizing look. "So. I suppose you had fun, then?"

She took the lemon and carefully tucked the flower around it, listening to Mehndi very intently. "Thank you," she said, but she really meant it this time as she examined the lemon. It smelled nice, and she considered biting it. Were lemons a fruit or a flower? You shouldn't bite flowers, she thought, feeling very considerate as she did so.
"I got a flower, Aquinas," she chirped, holding out the little white bud to show him. "It was dead and then it wasn't and now Mehndi says I can keep it and that I'm gonna take lessons here and isn't Mehndi pretty, look, she has pretty black hair and-"
Tanee seemed to remember that Aquinas probably knew all this. Very sedately, she finished, "And I got a lemon, too. Are lemons a fruit?"

Mehndi nodded dreamily as she handed Aquinas a little square card and giving Tanee's shoulders a small, reassuring squeeze, walked over to the offerings to the gods and rang the bell one more time before disappearing through a tall wooden door to the side.
Aquinas bent down slightly to examine the flower at eye level. He squinted at it. "It's pretty enough, I suppose. Doesn't look like anything very special to me." He straightened up again, brushing imaginary dust off his trousers. "Lessons, is it? I suppose Mehndi got what she wanted then." He glanced at the card Mehndi had given him; it had, printed on it in miniscule lettering, instructions for both him and Tanee. He himself knew only a little magic; things that seemed to be much more banal and practical than that Tanee and Mehndi seemed to be predisposed towards.
Aquinas made a face of mock confusion as he pretended to be thinking very hard. "Lemons? Hmmm. I believe they are a fruit, Tanee. Not one you'd want to go biting into, but a fruit nonetheless. Maybe you could get a palace cook to make you something nice out of your lemon?" He smiled rather roguishly at this; Melisande, he knew, was one of the better palace cooks, among other things.
"I think it's time we were heading back."

"Bye," Tanee called over one shoulder, clearly feeling quite bubbly again now that she was out of the more solemn atmosphere of the Aashraya. "It's a special flower," she said stubbornly. "She said so." As for lessons, well, yeah! Hadn't she said that? But she nodded again. "Mehndi was happy," she related, trying to decide whether she wanted to hold her lemon in her left or right hand.
She giggled with delight at Aquinas's face. "Okay," she agreed easily. Even if now she was just really curious as to what, exactly, a lemon tasted like that she didn't want to just bite into it. Slitting her eyes at the fruit, she nodded enthusiastically. "Let's go home, I wanna tell my flowers! It was really really awesome-ful, there was a guy named Ar'ose and bells and this flower! And more flowers! And offerings! I'm really really sorry you missed it."
It had been just that cool.

Aquinas could not help but look skeptical at this. "Well, if you say so." His expression darkened slightly again as Tanee detailed her day. "Thank you very much for reminding me," he sniffed at her. He really wasn't so bothered anymore. But he still did not appreciate being left out of anything.
