 Hoshiko was practicing her Mad Ninja Skills. This, in and of itself, was rather routine for her. She had her big clear grassy place with her big rock, which was good for napping on if you got tired from practicing epic ninjutsus, but Hoshi wasn't napping - she was training.
First, she practiced walking-without-making-a-sound. She was good at that - she could make it across the whole clearing without leaving a footprint or rustling too many blades of grass. Maybe she could get her father to teach her some more sometime. Then she practiced backflips, which she was sort of clumsy at but could do okay.
And then she climbed up on the rock and tried to turn into sand. She was never sure if she was doing it right because she'd never been properly instructed in the subject, but if her father could do it, who was to say she couldn't? She closed her eyes and focused.
Sand. Sand. I am one with the sand.
She wasn't sure if anything was happening or not.

Xanul was bored.
He was debating about popping into his parent's house to see how things were going, but he suspected that they might be busy cleaning up after Kitsumi or chasing after her. That, and he really didn't want to deal with his mother asking him if he liked Orta right now.
He just didn't feel like denying it right now. Phoenix's words about girlfriends had shocked him, and well, he didn't know how to face his friend anymore.
Blowing out a sigh, he left Aroha and Yun Die with a mumbled "I'm going" through a portal, knowing full well he was being followed with worried eyes, and a cryptic message, most likely.
He reappeared in a field, not too far away from the female. Downcast, Xanul didn't notice the other.

Hoshiko, having her eyes closed and her mind intently focused on being one with the sand, did not notice that someone else had suddenly appeared in the clearing. So she sat on the rock, oblivious, repeating her mantra over and over in her head.
She did not think it was working.
I am one with the sand. I am one with the sand. I AM ONE WITH THE SAND. IAMONEWITHTHESAND--
"I AM ONE WITH THE SAND!" She yelled.
She snapped her eyes open.
Had she really just said that out loud? Apparently so. She scanned the clearing, finally spotting the intruder. WHAT? HOW DARE HE? She leapt off the rock, landed in front of him, and got uncomfortable close to his face.
"WHO ARE YOU? ARE YOU FROM A RIVAL NINJA CLAN? WHY ARE YOU WATCHING ME? ANSWERS, NOW!

Her sudden outburst shocked him, and Xanul jumped, literally, golden eyes widened as he whirled around to look for the source, eyes darting here and there wildly.
It wasn't long till the female had jumped in front of him and leaned in to him, prompting a slight blush from the half-Nobody. "Um...what? Ninja?" The only thing he knew about ninjas was Yuffie. "I'm a wizard! I didn't mean to intrude!" He exclaimed, clearly flustered.

"Oh," said Hoshiko, sitting back on her haunches. Well, that changed everything. Obviously.
"This is my secret training spot," she declared. "If you're not a rival ninja, and you're not spying on me and trying to steal my family's 'jutsu..."
She trailed off and paced around him a few times, inspecting. No concealed weapons, no weird extra features... She came back around front and poked curiously at his shoulder.
"Then why are you here?"

Steal her family's wha? He cocked an eyebrow curiously but chose not to ask for now. Probably just a ninja thing. It was like how wizard stuff were difficult for others to understand.
"I...well...I kinda hang about here to practice magic." Sometimes. He added mentally. Most of the time he would actually just sit about and mull over stuff, and back when he was still taking care of Verix, he would be teaching her magic, or avoiding her attacks.
He wondered how his niece was doing.

"Well, I've never seen you here," Hoshiko replied defensively. She looked around the clearing and decided that it was big enough for the both of them. "I guess I can share," she added, and began to stroll off.
A moment later she was back.
"What kind of magic?" she asked, genuinely interested.

He shrugged. "Well, I'm not always here, and neither are you." He had been busy visiting family members of late.
...That and he liked to hide up in the trees.
He watched her walk off, and was about to create another portal when she returned. "Magic?" He echoed, turning to look at her. "Well...uhm, we use a wand," at this, he waved his willow wand in his paw, "and well, there are different genres....Charms, Defense Against Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Potions, and more."

"Oh," said Hoshiko, pretending to understand. She watched him wave the stick around, pondered this for a bit, and decided that maybe she'd understand a bit better after a demonstration.
"Can you show me?" she asked, and busied herself trying to blow a lock of hair away from her nose.

It was after the words came out of his mouth that Xanul realized that he shouldn't be so specific; most didn't understand magic terms. Josh had told him to speak English when he had babbled on and on about spells.
Really, was it that uncommon in the realm nowadays?
"Welll..." He blinked. "What would you like to see? A simple charm maybe?"

Hoshiko, who despite all pretending really still had no idea what he was talking about, nodded eagerly. "Sure!" she said happily. "Anything you wanna do, I'm game!"
She fixed her eyes on him, uncertain of what she was looking for. How would he do it? What would happen? How would she know if he'd done anything? What if he hurt himself? What if he hurt her?

"Anything?" He repeated dubiously. With so many spells, it was hard to choose one, and he was often indecisive. Something safe probably, he mused. Xanul never hurt a fly with his magic (Lune was an exception), only Lace, and the worse he had done to her was just to Stun her.
"Avis!" A flock of bird shot out at the tip of his wand, and he was careful to point it up to the sky.

"Oh!" exclaimed Hoshiko, hopping backwards in surprise. She watched the birds flap off. They were real birds! He had just made real birds appear!
Her tails beat the ground enthusiastically. She bounced a little. "That was amazing! What else can you do?"

He flicked his tail, giving a smile at her surprise. Most non-magical people were amazed by the "tricks" wizards and witches of his kind could do. "Um..." He blinked. "Mostly producing water, summoning stuff and Patronuses." The first was used to help clean the house, the second as well, and the third to convey messages. Of course, he could just pop over, but lately, he had been busy at home with his own family.
