living at home at all could be complicated, a lot of people are ready to be out by 18
I don't thing they're really ready. I mean, most people are definitely grown up enough physically, but it's rare to see a really mature 18-year-old.
It's harder over here, where getting a decently (and I just mean enough-to-live-with) paying job is nearly impossible without some sort of college education. There aren't many options for a kid who's just out of high school, and even less if you want a decent paycheck.
And if they dropped out they have only 3 choices: trash collector (and that's nasty over here cuz they actually have to get off the truck and get the trash to put it in the back), policeman (which has LOUSY payment and that's why not many people are interested) or Construction worker (which is filled with underpayed immigrants with no social security, and thus the kids who accept the jobs have to resign to more or less the same payment...).
So most kids wait a bit longer to leave their home.
