This is a first draft to a story i am making.
I have actually no idea how it goes as i just make it up as it goes
(hence the title)
It is not actually a serius story but simply something i decided to do as training so be as harsh as you want
As long as i can improve myself from it im hapy to hear anything you got to say.
It was late and the three moons were already visible and there were no clouds to cover their light.
The Yellow Vinera was almost golden in colour this night.
The lonley wanderer knew that this was a bad omen. Both the blue Meria and the red Baorin was pale and their secrets well hidden. The wanderer could not help but marvel at the thought of them as there was only one moon in the world he had left.
1
There were almost no people at the tavern and Mirijan took the peace as a welcome change.
She knew that later when the nightshift from the mines got off there would be more than enough people to keep both her and her sister busy. She walked over the wooden floor and up to one of the big windows, her long red dress sweeping against the newley cleaned floor.
Leaning her head against the window her warm breath made little cloud shapes on the chilliy window. She just stood there for a second staring out at the village that was her entire world.
It was a small village that had been built to house the workers at the crystal mine nearby.
Her parents had been some of the first people to move there.
They had helped build it and unless the mine emptied they would stay here until the day they died.
Her father had worked in the mine for a few years when the accident happend. One of the mineshafts had fallen in and several of the workers had died.
There had been some people trapped in the mine and her father had been amongst the ones sent to help them. They had ben working for several hours and they had almost reached the trapped men.
Then the mine caved in again.
Her father had been caught in the slide and it had taken the others several hours to dig him out. When they finally did he was barley alive.
They had carried him back to the house and her mother had taken care of him as well as she could. For a long time his life were hanging by a thread. The damage done by the rockslide was extensive, but he finally started to recover.
Unfortunalty the accident had claimed his leg. He was always joking about it and telling them that it was a small price to pay for being alive. But there was a anger behind the laughter, visible only in short glipses in his eyes. Her mother had told her that they had struggled hard to keep their spirits up.
She knew that they could not survive on her money alone. And with his leg in the shape it was they did not know what he should do to provide for them.
The mining company refused to pay and even with their friends helping them it was hard. Nobody had much money and there were little room in the few houses that had been built.
It was later that year that her sister was born.
Her parents decided that they needed a better life for her than the day to day living that had been all they could manage so far. With the help of their friends they borrowed up enough money to make their new life.
And the Hungry Mink was built.
A name choosen after their firstborn daughter.
A year after the doors to their tavern opened for the first time, Mirijan was born. And now 19 years after her birth she was still here. Her Parents still ran the tavern and she and her sister still lived with them. Though Mirijan was sure that her sister would move soon enough.
She smiled a little to herself as she thought about her sister, how much she actually loved her and how happy Mink was right now.
There was a young man Named Erain that seemed to be very much intrested in Mink.
He seemed to be nice and he certainly was not bad on the eyes. She was happy for her sister no question about that it was just that... there seemed to be nobody for herself.
She didnt know why but she didnt feel that the men here was quite what she wanted.
It certainly wasnt for a lack of suitors.
She had beautiful long black hair and bright blue eyes. She admitted to herself that she might not be as thin as her sister but she had very nice curves. She had inherited her mothers skin, a light brown colour that seemed to bring out the brightness of her eyes.
The thing that botherd her most about her looks was the slightly upwards nose and the big amount of frecles on her face. She looked at the reflection in the window. Quite satisfied with what she saw in it.
And then she looked beyond it out at the night. The dark streets lit only by a few lanterns and beyond it the clear night sky.
It was a magic night, all three moons were visible and Vinera was almost golden in colour.
As bad a omen as it was there was no denying that it was beautiful.
She hoped that the wolves of Therinu woods would not attack the miners coming home. They were always a bit more agressive on a three moon night.
"Mirijan come here a moment" It was her mother calling her from the kitchen.
"Yes mother!" She felt a bit annoyed as she turned away from the window and the wiew of the sky. She wanted to just look at the moons for a while longer. It was something about them that felt strange tonight.
"Well mother what is it?" she asked as she passed behind the counter and into the kitchen.
It was big and clean, as her mother always said it to be one of the most important things to think about in an inn.
Her mother were standing there with her hands behind her back and an odd look in her face.
"I want you to take this to Perry." she said, and handed her daughter a big basket heavy from the food in it. It had a wooden cover on it that was secured with a clasp on the side so the food would not risk falling out.
Mirijan looked at it for a moment.
"Where is he now then?" she asked
"I cant take it to him if hes still at the mine you know, the moons are up."
she shifted the basket from one hand to the other restlessly.
"Dont worry dear, he's at Andaras house and he asked me to get this to him before her next shift." her mother grabbed her shoulders and pushed her out of the door knowing that if she gave her a chance her daughter seemed in the mood to argue and might refuse.
"ANDARA!!
But mother i cant stand being there you know that her father always makes discusting suggestions as soon as he knowns nobody can hear him!" Mirijan turned around to complain at her mother only to get the door in her face.
"LALALAICANTHEARYOU" she could hear her mothers voice through the door.
"I WILL GET YOU FOR THIS!" she yelled back at her, wawing her hand at the door for a few seconds. Until she realised how meningless it was.
She stared angrily at the dorr for a few moments, then gave up a sigh.
`there is no use arguing with that woman` she thought for herself, then she turned around and headed down what probably should be called the main road.
It was not big and there was hardy any light but it was clean and had a few shops.
Muttering angrily to herself she she passed by the warehouses at the end of the road and turned towards the road to Andaras home.
She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she did didnt notice the when someone came out of the shadows. A man man, silent as the shadows he had just left, walked up to her from behind. She didnt notice him at all before she felt his hand on his shoulder.
Startled she quickly turned around swinging the basket as a weapon.
THUNK
It hit him hard over the head and he took a step back, his cheek slightly bruised and a supriced look in his face.
He was a tall man dressed in dark clothes and with long red hair with a slight stubble on his face. He had long bangs hanging in his face and his hair was flowing slightly in the wind. His skin looked a bit darker than the colour of the people from the area.
"Oops! Careful there girl you migh take someones eye out with that." he said, holding a hand to his bruised cheek.
She couldnt help but stare at him for a few seconds, his eyes looked like nothing she had ever seen before. Copper with a red tone to them.
"Who are you?" she demanded to know.
"You dont live in this village so explain your buisness here or i will call for the guard!" she knew strangers were most likley to be trouble, there had been to much troubles with thieves before.
"Relax girl im only passing through, i have traveled a long time and i wanted to rest in a warm bed tonight. That is all i swear." he smiled sweetly at her, his hands making small gestures constantly, almost nervously.
"If rest is truly all you seek here then you might find it in the tavern over there." She pointed in the direction of her home.
"My parents owns it and you can get food and a bath for a small fee."
He looked in the direction she had pointed then turned back to her and gave ger a small bow.
"I thank you milady for the information, i guess the bath was a hint towards my smell..."
She shrugged her shoulders slightly.
"Take it as you wish". She went silent for a second and then continued
"I apologice for hitting you, you startled me and thats not a very good thing to do this late at night. Especially not on a three moon night."
He looked at her curiusly for a second.
"Apology accepted, and i will take that advice to heart and try not to scare any more people today." he turned towards the tavern waving a small goodbye.
"I suppose i might run into you again since i am staying at your familys tavern, if so would be the case i will make sure to make a noice before aproaching you." He laughed and then he was gone.
She looked after him as he left, curius as to where he could be going that took him all the way out here.
She turned towards the houses on the left side and walked past them following the street almost to the end before turning into the alley and through it to the houses slightly behind them.
She did give a thought about the wolves, she knew they lived near the mountains around the area but she felt secure as she knew they had never come into the village.
But even knowing that did not make the abandoned streets feel any less strangley unsecure this night.
She couldnt quite put her finger on why this night was any diffrent than any other night she had walked alone carrying baskets of food.
Food for friends and to some of the old men who had worked late and didnt have the time or energy to cook for themselves anymore.
The unpleasant feeling did not leave her as she turned towards the last street and she felt almost relieved when she reached Andaras house, even though she did not know if the old man would have fallen asleep yet.
As she took the last few steps up the stairs to the front door she stopped for a short moment and took a few deep breaths.
'I can do this, no problem...' She rolled her eyes in annoyance as she realiced she was lying to herself.
She nervously shifted the basket from one hand to the other before she lifted her hand and knocked gently on the door, she didnt want to wake him up if he was asleep.
She shifted the basket again not for a second thinking about wether the food inside it would fall over from doing so. She restlessly put her head to the door listening for the footsteps inside and jerked back when she heard someone quickly aproaching the door.
When Perry opened the door he was blushing red and his shirt was somewhat loose so she could se the massive set of hair on his chest.
He was not the most handsome of men with his stumpy nose and his massive brown hair constantly looking as if a flock of birds had made nests in it, but he had something strange about him and he had a charm that could melt the heart of a harpy.
One could not help but like him.
She smiled sweetly as she greeted him.
"Hi Mirijan how nice of you to bring this here." He looked nervously over his shoulder at something Mirijan could not see.
"Umm do you ehh want to come in? The old man is asleep." Then he added in small whispering voice
"Hes been drinking old woman Bargas homemade brew and when he drinks that even a earthquake couldnt wake him up."
She couldnt help but giggle at him she didnt have to come in to see that Andara had come back early today.
Andara was a sturdy woman of 30 years age, short and round with massive red hair, she had cought the eye of several of the men.
And her outgoing personality made her one of the most popular people in the town. It was no wonder that even the slighty younger Perry had fallen for her. And it was no secret that they had been lovers for a while now.
Mirijan often found it hard to belive that that dirty old man really was Andaras father.
"Hey are ye comin in or not?" Andara had appeared behind Perry dressed only in a big shirt. She leaned agains him and he turned an even brighter red.
"I don mind the company ye know." she said smiling while putting her arms around Perry.
"If yer worried about him being in tha way i can move him for ye ya know?" It was true that she could move him whitout problem since Andara was the strongest woman Mirijan knew.
And she knew a lot of very strong women.
She could not help but laugh at Andaras offer. Perry gave her a angry look that just made her laugh even harder.
He sighed and shrugged his shoulders.
"No respect at all" he looked to the side as if refusing to look at her anymore.
Andara pinched hid side making him give her a angry look that went compleatly ignored as she had already turned her attention towards Mirijan again.
Mirijan , also ignoring Perry, shifted the basket again before answering
Andaras original question.
"No thats okay i want to get home as soon as possible, there is a stranger there and i want to be sure hes not making any trouble." She felt an odd shiver as she thought about the man she had met.
Both Andara and Perry looked suprised at the news. Adara leaned against the doorpost scratching her head as she answerd.
"A stranger? We havent had one of those here in a long time, not since that crystal thief Geirt."
Perry looked a bit worried his eyebrows, nearly indistingble normally, became one as he wrinkled his forehead. A lot of the laughter gone from his eyes.
The last time there had been a stranger here he had tried to hurt some of the female workers. While they were more than capable to look after themselves there could still be trouble.
Andara shook her head so her long hair brushed against her cheeks.
"Cant imagine what he wuld want all the way out here if he aint after the mine, but if he gives ye any trouble let me know and ill give him a good beating ya hear?" It was an offer to be taken seriusly when coming from her.
Mirijan shook her head, thankful for being Andaras friend, that woman would be a terrifying enemy.
"Thank you but i dont think it will be necessery for you to get involved, he didnt seem that dangerus i just want to be sure. " she spoke fast eager to get home again.
"Besides i dont want you to have to leave your... meal." she knew that she had interupted them and didnt feel that she should keep them from their playing.
"Here is some food my mother sent over for you." she handed them the basket.
"It might be a little shaken but im sure its still edible ." she felt a little bit ashamed at the thought of how she had hit the man with it and hoped that nothing had broken inside the basket.
"Thanx sweetie ill make sure ta treasure evry last bit of it. An tomorrow i can return tha basket and have a good reason to come over and make sure yer all alive." Andara gave her a big hug and Perry gave her a pat on the head.
Turning away from them Mirijan waved goodbye to the couple as she went down the stairs again. Before she had even managed to get down the few steps Andara got out on the front door and yelled after her.
"Dun forget to get me if sumting happens alright?" Andara looked as if she would not take no for an answer so Mirijan promised to do so.
They watched her leave and stood there for a moment.
"Shes a good girl aint she?" Adara stood with the basket in one hand and the other wrapped around his back.
"Yes i just hope there wont be any problems with the stranger she was talking about..." He bent down slightly and kissed her on the neck.
"But for now lets get back inside and enjoy the evening" Perry lifted Adara up in his arms and carried her back inside and closed the door behind them.
The walk back was, as it always is, a lot faster than it was going out.
But of course there was no more strangers to hit over the head. There was however a few miners who had gotten of their shifts, she knew evryone and waved a hello at the ones that noticed her.
When she aproached the tavern she listned carefully for any signs of trouble, but the only sounds she could hear was the voices of the men who had already found their way to the beer.
She went around to the kitchen entry and snuck in that way hoping to get a chance to talk to her father before her mother put her to work.
"That sure went fast" her mother said. "Was old man Gareth still awake then?"
Her luck wasnt with her tonight.
She sighed inside and turned to her mother who was standing by the stove.
"No mother, he was not but Adara and Perry was..." she smirked thinking about how embarrased he had seemed.
"Did a man come here? I met a strange man on the way to Andaras house and i told him the way here." she glanced at her mother. hoping she would not put her to work just yet.
Her mother stirred a big cauldron filled with a stew that smelled heavenly.
"Yes he got here shortly after you left, he wanted a meal and a bath before bed so i set up the bathroom for him. He should be done by now so if you could take a bit of food up there id appriciate it." She put a tray of food in Mirijans hands before she even finished the sentance.
"Oh and do you happen to know why he had a bruised cheek? If hes been in a fight in town im not sure if i want to have him here. I dont like troublemakers." She looked questiongly at her daughters cheeks as the quickly turned red at the question.
"He suprised me and i kinda hit him with the food basket" Mirijan almost couldnt look at her mother. She was not normally a very violent girl and she felt stupid about the whole thing.
"Oh well he didnt seem to be thinking about it much so i guess its no real harm done, but perhaps i should have Mink bring him his food instead. Just incase you get startled again." Her mother did a small gesture as if she was going to take the tray from her hands.
"No! I will take it and i will do my best not to hit him again." She was annoyed at her mother for joking about it but could not help to play along.
"Ill be right back."
Walking up the steep wooden stairs she felt less secure about it than she had shown and she was beginning to think that perhaps it would be best to let her sister handle it afterall.
She stopped before the door to the bath and took a deep breath before she knocked on the door.
She could hear his voice from inside the room but could not hear the words but is sounded like he said something about a door so she opened the door and walked in.
The sight that greeted her was something she could never have imagined.
He stood in the middle of the floor naked and dripping wet.
But what shocked her was what he had been hiding under the long coat he had been wearing.
He had a long red tail like the one of a fox.
The only ones with tails that she could think of were demons.
The trey fell to the ground and the bread and meat on it spread across the room.
She opend her mouth to scream but before she could get a sound out he leapt towards her and within a second he was over her holding her towards his wet body with a hand over her mouth.
"Dont scream" he wisperd his voice was dark and his eyes suddenly seemed to have gained a new silver colour.
"If you scream i might have to hurt you or people you care about. I dont want to do that. Do you understand?" His voice was calm even though she could feel his heart beat fast against her body. She was petrified but she somehow thought that he meant what he said about not wanting to hurt her.
At least she hoped so.
"Do you understand?" he repeated his question.
"Nod if yo do."
She noddes slowly. Hoping that he would release her if she did. He was very strong and his grip on her started to hurt.
He looked her straight in the eyes while talking.
"Im going to let go now if you start to scream bad things will happen is that clear?"
She nodded again a little bit more forcefull than before and he let her go.
She gasped as he released his grip on her. She wasnt sure what he was going to do, or what she was going to do for that matter. He just stood there looking at her catiusly. His eyes a little bit less silver in colour now. She looked at the ruined food at the floor.
"I guess i should clean that up..." She didnt move to clean it up.
"Im sorry about the food."
His voice startled her.
She felt as if suddenly all her limbs had become very very heavy.
" I didnt mean for you to see it, i just wanted a nice meal and a warm bed to sleep in for the night" he looked at the food scatterd across the room.
"I guess now i wont get either..." His voice sounded strange and it took har a few seconds to realice he had sounded more sad over the missed meal that about scaring her half to death. She suddenly got the feeling back into her body.
"You could at least apologice for threatening me!" She was angry at him for scaring her and for being so callous about it. He looked at her with suprice in his face. He had not expected her to talk back to him.
"Why should i apologice for that? You scared me too" he said in a tone she found very annoying.
"I scared you? How the bleeding abyss could i scare you? Your the one that attacked me!" she almost screamed at him.
He had looked at her almost laughingly untill the last sentace.
"Is it that strange?" he said calmly.
"If you had had a chance to scream you would have brought your family here and what do you think they would have done to me?" His voice was almost angry now.
"They probably would have attacked and i wouldnt have had a chance to explain myself. And to avoid getting killed i would most likley have had to hurt or even kill several of them." He stopped talking and stared at her.
Mirijan dindnt know what to say.
She hadnt thought about it like that, but now it seemed almost obius. He didnt want to attack her, he was just defending himself. As that thought went through her head an another one almost imidietly followed.
He was still naked.
Her cheeks turned red as she quickly turned to face the wall.
"Huh what is it now?" she could hear the confused tone in his voice.
"Your clothes..." she wispherd.
It took him a moment to realise what she meant. His thoughts still spinning on the whole thing about her seing his tail he had almost forgotten WHY it was visible in the first place.
"Ackh!" A strange cry came out of him as he dashed towards his clothes.
A loud thumping on the door made him stop right in his tracks.
"HEY IS EVRYTHING ALRIGHT IN THERE?!" It was the voice of her father. He had heard the loud voices and was worried that the stranger might do something to his daughter.
The man felt panic working its way through his body. What should he do? He was trapped naked in a room with the daughter of that giant of a man. He felt cold sweat run down his back.
"Its allright daddy! I just tripped and dropped the food, could you ask mother to make a new one while i clean this up?" she laughed and added
"And have her put some of her famus Doranigon drink on it to becouse i kinda think he might need it!" She looked at the man, her eyes glittering with amusement.
He just stood there staring at her.
He had been sure that she would run and let her father have his skin. When she could hear her fathers step going down the stairs and the thumphing sound of the artificial leg dampen as he walked, she turned towards him and added with a smirk.
"Your still naked remember? You should consider doing something about it."
He twitched and jumped towards his clothes. He was usually very shy about nudity but the fear of having to fight these people, that had seemed very nice, had made him forget about it.
When he had gotten all his clothes on he turned towards her again to find that she had started to pick the food of the floor.
Pulling his finger through his in lair in a nervous gesture he slowly aproached the kneeling figure.
Unsure of what to say he silently bent down beside her to help her with the cleaning.
Just as they picked the last pieces of the food of the floor there was a thump at the door.
He jerked up and stared at it as if he thought he would be able to see right through it if he tried hard enough.
Mirijan, hoping that it wasnt her father, held her breath for a second before she heard a voice at the other side of the door.
"Sis? Its me Mink, i got some food for you." The voice of her sister made Mirijan relieved.
If her father sent her he didnt belive there was a problem here.
He would never let his daughters come to any harm if he had anything to say about it.
"Come in we are all decent here" she said.
`Or at least i hope so` she thought with a sideglance at the man.
Mink carefully opend the door and looked at the dirtied floor, while the food was now free of any pieces of solid food there was still a large stain on it. Her eyes remained there only for a second before continuing to the red haired man standing over her sister.
He looked somewhat uncomfortable.
"Heres some new food for you" she said in a cheerful tone. Hoping that it would not be to obius that she was staring at him.
"I hope you vill get a chance to enjoy it this time".
Mirijan quickly stood up and showed her sister her tounge.Making sure the the angle made it impossible for the man to see it.
"Ha bloody ha sis. Go jump in a lake or something." She took the trey from her sister with an annoyed look at her face.
"If you dont need me down there yet im gonna eat with him. There is a couple of things i want to ask him about."
Mink looked at her sister with suprise written all over her face. There was an intruiged tone in Mirijans voice that Mink had never heard before.
What could it be that had captured her sister attention? Sure the man was not bad looking but there had been more than enough good looking men in the inn looking for Mirijans attention, but she had never actually showed any towards them.
She quickly arranged her face to a neutral state and leaned in to her sister ear and wisperd
"If you're gonna seduce him i dont think a food war would have been the best choice". She quickly moved out of the way as Mirijans foot shot out from under the dress with the intent to kick her on the leg.
"If your quite done with your stupid jokes could you go get some food for me as well? Were gonna eat in his room." Mirijan looked at her sisters amused smile and once again felt like kickíng, her but figured it best not to for the moment.
Mink just nodded.
"I will get you some food too then, just a moment and dont worry ill fix the rest of the mess for you as well."
Mirijan nodded thankfully, glad that her sister had the tact not to question her in front of their guest, though she had no doubt that she would be bombarded with questions later.
"Thanks sis i am gonna keep it as short as possible and be down to help you later. Dont worry." As Mink walked out the room she glanced towards the strange man again as she closed the door behind her.
Mirijan turned around towards the man as soon as her sister had left the room.
"Im sorry for deciding without really asking you first, but if you are going to stay here i want to know a little more about you. And i think you owe me at least a little of your time after threatening to kill me and my family." She waited for him to answer without rushing him, certain that he would argue about it.
He did not seem like he type to be pushed around to easily.
He on the other hand was still feeling shocked that things had not turned for the worst and that she still was not trying to get him killed.
Had someone threatend him the way he had just done to her he would not have been so polite.
"I guess i can tell you a bit then. I cant tell you evrything but at least some of it." He was sure she would complain about it.
She looked at him for a second with a curius look and turned to the door.
"That is fine with me. I can understand that you can not tell some stranger all about your life and where it will lead you. I am simply curius about you." She opend the door while carefully balancing the food trey in her hand and added.
"What room are you staying in by the way?"
For a second he felt an odd feeling about her, he could not indentify it however and just shrugged it off.
It had been a long time since anyone had known about his tail and not just reacted with screaming and fear.
"Its the one two doors to the left of this one" he said.
She turnedto the left and took a few quick steps to reach the door, opening it while once again balancing the trey on one hand.
"Well lets get in then."
The room was small with a small wooden bed standing right under a large window.
The moons shone in giving an added light to the small candle standing on a tiny table. Next to the table was a sturdy loking chair.
His pack was laying on the floor leaning on the bed.
"Sit down on the bed and ill take the chair." She pointed to the bed as she said it and he didnt object to her ordering him around.
He closed the door behind them as she put the trey down on the table.
"We can talk once my sister comes with the food, i havent eaten for a while and im really hungry." She sat down on the chair and didnt say anything more.
He walked over to the bed and sat as close to the table as he could. Slighty cautius but even more curius to what she would do.
They just sat there looking at each other quietly, each deep in their own thought when a thump came from the door.
"Sis? i got your food here." Minks soft voice broke the silence in the room.
"Im coming in" She pushed the door open balancing the trey agaist her hip. Lifting it up so she held it in both hand she took the trey over to the table and put it down next to the one already on there.
"Mom says you can take your time since it seems to be a slow night anyway." She bent down toward her sister.
"And she also say you should be careful not getting into something stupid" she wisperd. Mirijan just looked at her and nodded.
She already figured that part out when he had threatend to kill her.
But she didnt think he would do something bad right now.
"Tell her thank you from me." Mirijan took a look at the food.
"It looks good."
Mink nodded in agreeing.
"I will tell her that." She turned towards the man looking at him for a second then adding.
"Enjoy your meal." She smiled and then quickly left the room.
The silence were so deep you could have cut it with a knife.
They just sat there staring at each other neither of them sure how to start a conversation.
"I guess since im the one who asked you to do this i should go first." Mirijan finnaly broke the awkward silence after what had felt like an eternity.
"I just realised i have yet to introduce my self. I am called Mirja. What name do you want to be called?"
She waited for him to answer. He on the other hand was wondering what kind of odd way that was to ask for a name.
"What do you mean? what do i want to be called? You can call me Jinx. Thats my name." Before he had finished the sentace he heard her draw a deep gasp.
"Is that your real name?" She asked him slightly shocked. It was unheard of to give someone you didnt know your real name.
He looked at her, puzzled by her suprise.
"It is the name my parent gave me if thats what you mean?" He couldnt understand her reaction at all.
She shook her head shocked at his behavior.
"You mean you actually gave me your birth name? Thats a big responsibility for a person to have."
He couldnt figure out just what in the world she was talking about and started to wonder if he had done something wrong.
"I dont understand... Whats wrong about giving you my name? Where i come from it dont mean anything special." She thought at first that he was joking but the suprise in his eyes seemed real enough.
"Perhaps you dont understand then, that there is power in names." Her voice was still filled with shock but she started to understand that he simply did not know about names, how could it be possible?
He on the other hand started to feel really curius about it all what was the big deal?
Names were just thing you gave each other to make it easier to talk with each other right? But she seemed to think diffrent and he wanted her to explain more about it.
"I really dont know anything about this can you please eplain to me what youre talking about?" He shifted his weight and sat forward, his arm leaning against the table.
Mirijan shook her head for a second in disbelief, then she started to explain.
"People have three names you understand? The first is the name they want to be called, its the name you give strangers or people you dont trust much."
She paused and pointed at her self.
"My chosen name is Mirja. Then there is your birth name witch is given to people you trust or that you know well. Its the one you use most time around your home. It has power over you if someone that dont like you is given this. But it only has power if the person having the name gives it to you. I gave you my chosen name Mirja."
She stopped for a second, unsure if she should continue.
"But my given name is Mirijan. If you so choose you can use it against me. If someone else had given you my name it wouldnt have worked the same way." She paused again to let her words sink in.
He scratched his chin for a second in puzzlement.
"So does this men that you just gave me power over you? Even after the way i treated you? And even though im a complete stranger? Is that normal?"
She felt a shiver going down her spine.
"Yes i did, im not sure why. But i suppose i felt it was more equal for you to know mine as well since you already told me yours." She spoke in a very quiet voice now.
"Its not normal or even very wise, if my family knew they would get angry at me for it."
He still couldnt understand just how it could matter so much or why she then knowingly gave him the power over her but he had a question to ask.
"You said there was three kind of names? What is the last one?"
She took a deep breath and then continued with the explanation.
"The third name is your true name. It is a name that you keep to yourself at all costs since giving it away would give people complete power over you. It does not even matter if the person who knows it got it from you or someone else, it gives the same power nonetheless."
She looked at him with a very serius look in her eyes, she wanted him to understand just how dangerous names could be.
He, feeling very intrigued by the whole idea of it, felt like he should somehow confirm that he understood and nodded agreingly.
While he felt a little ridickulous since he really didnt get it she seemed to think it was enough and therefore continued.
"But using it right you can give someone great strenght through their name too. But its more likely to backfire and hurt you. Thats why not even your family gets to know it since there was always a chance someone could use it to hurt you. Even the best familys can run into problems and fight, brothers can turn agains each others children betray their familys and thing like that."
She looked a little sad as she said it and he couldnt help but wonder why. Then he focused on what she was saying and the thought fell out of his mind.
"There has been a few people whos let their lover know it but most of those times it ended badly."
She stopped and looked at him to see what kind of a reaction he would get.
He just sat there chin in his hand and looked as if he was in deep thought.
She wonderd what he thought about, did he understand it? Or was he thinking about something else?
She felt she had to ask.
"How come you dont know any of this? Dont people where you come from have any knowlage at all about names?"
He took his hand from his chin and put it on the table.
"No where i come from people only have one name, the one our parents give us when we are born. And we have never had any trouble with people missusing our names."
She couldnt belive it!
A whole place filled with people that had no respect for names! How could they be so ignorant of the danger?
Did they not even know their own true name?
Perhaps they had some form of guard against it so that people couldnt use their name against them?
Her head was buzzing with questions but eventually one became more clear than the others.
"Where are you from?"
He had suspected that would be something she would come to ask him and he already had though of a lie to tell her.
"Im from another world. not unlike this one but still very diffrent."
That was not the lie he had planned to tell her.
Why did he tell her that? She would probably not belive him anyway but it botherd him that he had told her.
"What is this other world called?" she asked quietly.
It took him a second to understand that she hadnt questioned him at all but seemed to take it as a natural thing that he would have come from another world.
"Its called Merikadel." She nodded agreingly.
"That is a nice thing for a world to be called. So how come you came here? Is there something your searching for?" She was still calm and relaxed and didnt seem to think of it as some kind of joke as he would have thought her to do.
"Im searching for something yes..." he said in a somewhat hesitating voice, he didnt want to tell her this but he couldnt seem to stop.
"I am searching for something, though i do not know what yet. I am hoping i will know what when i see it."
Mirijan tilted her head slightly and looked at his eyes for a second, they had gotten a green shade in the edges now. What could that mean?
He noticed her looking at him and moved his arm to his sides in a nervous way.
"How do you search for it if you dont even know what it is?" His eyes became even greener.
"I am not sure but there is something showing me the way. It takes me from one place to another giving me clues and even more puzzles each time. I dont know why or what will happen when i find it." He let out a small sigh.
"I can only hope it will be worth it. But i have a feeling it will be something that can change both our worlds in the end."
She nodded at his words, it seemed resonable enough. There was a lot of people who was led by some god or another on quests to change the world.
Most of them died.
Some of them found that it wasnt quite as big a change as they had been hoping for, and others still just gave up when it got to hard. But then there was the select few that didnt die or give up and who really changed the fundaments of the world.
Mostly for the better, sometimes for the worse but always a neccessary change.
She rather hoped he would be one of the ones that made a great change for the better. It seemed nicest of the alternatives.
"I hope you will find what your searching for." She said it with a very quiet and warm voice. He actually started to feel glad that he had told her. Even though he for his life couldnt figure out why he had done so.
"Me too" he said, streaching his arms out and grabbing some of the food food, a delicious looking fruit that looked as a red pear.
He had started to relax a bit and in doing so had finally heard the loud rumbling of his stomach.
She followed his example and grabbed a bit of the own food as well carving out a bit of meat for herself.
They ate under silence and rinced it down with the sweet Dorsagon juice spiked with a hint of lichorice Mirijans mother had sent up.
When they had finished all of the food they sat there for a second quietly looking at each other.
She with her hands folded in her knee and him wiping his on a bit of cloth. The fruit, although delicius, had been rather runny and his hands were coverd in sweet smelling juice.
Mirijan was the first to break the silence.
"There is one last thing i would like to know." She paused and looked out the window at the moons over the rooftops.
"What are you? I have never seen anyone with a tail like yours before." She hoped he wouldnt feel insulted by the question but he just smiled a second and answered her softly, hoping it would take the edge off the answer.
"Im a demon." He could hear her gasp and quickly added.
"But im not evil or anything like that. Not really. I just happend to be born by a demon. My father was a human though so i suppose im actually a half demon. My demon blood is stronger that my human blood, but im raised as a human far from other demons." He watched her face carefully, searching for signs that she would panic. But she just looked intruiged and not really afraid.
Then she suddely pointed her finger at him and let out in a loud voice.
"HA!"
That was not quite what he had expected but it sure was better than screaming.
"I KNEW IT!" she shouted while waving her finger at him.
"That was the first thing i though when i saw it. Well actually not the human blood part but still..." She shrugged her shoulders and then she smiled widely at him.
He felt very relived at her reaction. He had not been sure how she would react.
It was nice having someone knowing what he was after having been forced to hide it for so long.
"Well now you know. Is there something else you want to know while your at it?"
She only though about it for a second before asking.
"Whats with your eyes? At first the were copper and red, then in the bath they turned a silver color, and when we were talking before they got a green shade in them. Now they look almost blue around the iris."
He just stared at her with his eyes open.
"You can see that?" He was shocked.
No one exept his mother had ever seen the colours change in his eyes.
All people ever saw was a brown shade with copper in them.
She didnt understand what he meant. It was kind of hard not to see it after all.
"Off course i can see it, its kinda hard to miss them turning blue." He just shook his head.
It was odd and he didnt know what it meant.
"How about your sister could she see it too?" He felt exited about it. Perhaps this was a sign of some kind.
Or it could be that she had demon blood in her.
But he could not feel any sign of demonic aura from her and even a drop of blood should have been obius to him.
"I havent met any human before who could see the real colour of my eyes." He stood up and leaned over her.
"If you could find out if your sister can see it too then id be thankful. It could show if its a family thing or if it is just you."
She felt a bit suprised that it was such a big deal to see his eyes, but she figured she could ask her sister.
"I will do that but not tonight. The hour is late and she has probably already gone to bed. And so should i."
He felt a bit frustrated. He wanted to know NOW, but he resigned.
He knew he could not drag the girl out of bed to ask her to look at his eyes.
"Very well then, tommorow it is. I think i will stay here for a little while. I could need a short break to get my things cleaned and reapaired and my foodstorages filled anyway."
She stood up slowly, stretching her back a little then turned to the table and picked up the empty treys.
"Then i bid you goodnight." She gave him a small bow of her head and left the room. He stared at the door after she had left.
`Besides i could stand being around you for a little while longer`. he thought to himself as he laid down on the bed.
'Its nice having somebody to talk to` was his last thoughts as he fell asleep.
