UNDER CONSTRUCTION ((Note: New Concept: Large ENORMOUS Tropical-like Trees which evolved below the nimbus and penetrate it with gnarled enormous limbs from which wood can be derived from, cities be built upon, or with the ability to shred airship envelopes and penetrate hulls. Huge leaves move towards sunlight. Atmosphere below nimbus in inhospitable to humans who have adapted to low pressures above clouds, so they cannot return beneath clouds. One still iffy concept: Where does their brass come from?! Dx )) A millennium ago, the world became a much warmer place. Not in that the spirits and hearts of man made it such a place, but that their constant delving into innovation and lack of regard for the environment led to a world where heat was trapped under the thick blankets of smog that covered it.
With the warming of the world, the ice caps, both Northern and Southern, did melt. Water engulfed the Earth. Those who did not die of drowning, starvation, or exposure were burned alive as the world only continued to get hotter. Calamity followed calamity as great stones fell from the sky spreading even more dust, smoke, and destruction.
As things heated beyond compare below the smoke and cloud cover, ever more water began to evaporate and join the vast veil which now engulfed the earth. What was once flooded and drowned was now as dry and dead as a desert. Life below the clouds was now impossible as plant life began to die from lack of sunlight, and with it, the animal life that depended on plants to survive, and with those, the animal life that resided on the better part of the food chain and depended on smaller animals to eat. Of these animals, the ones who had done their great part in this disaster, and who still had the innovation and knowledge to help themselves escape was Man.
Man looked for the only way out... And that was up.
They built flying ships that would take them above the veil with the little technology they had left which wasn't destroyed by the Calamities. On top of the veil they had found that clouds had grown to such density, that they lent enough buoyancy to keep not only their ships afloat but also bits of Earth that had caught in the stratosphere when the meteors collided with the planet.
Above the veil they found an environment which would support their life. Small islands of Earth upon which they could grow food, and birds of all sorts which they could hunt for meat.
As the centuries passed, other species began to evolve to survive in the new conditions, and cloud creatures which seemed part bird, and part fish began to populate the nimbus. Forests began to grow on the floating islands, which were carefully tended and replanted when felled for lumber, which was used to construct even more floating ships.
Cities sprouted on floating materials or large islands, and government was established. The human race had a second wind, but one thing was clear. They could never again return below the clouds. Pretty soon, many forgot about the world beneath the clouds, and all anyone ever knew was their new world, floating on the nimbus, treading the vast expanses of clouds, their eyes turned toward their desolate sky. 1 - The Liliputian 2 - H.M.S. *Note: Though the cloudsea is buoyant enough to support, say, an exploration age size sailing ship without any envelope, most of the transportation of the era in which this RP takes place is actually flying than relying on sailing on top of the nimbus. But that is simply because their technology has advanced since humans arrived above the clouds.
