In My other thread: "anyone else write fantasy?" I asked which ending I should use for my book. I then decide to make a poll on it.

Ending #1. One of the main characters dies.

#2. The bad guy sacrifices himself to help save the Island.

i think its more touching and sad when a main characters dies. it leaves a better imprint on the reader. when the evil bad guy sacrifices himself to help others, i cant help but think, "good for him, he deserves it" or something of the sort. but when a main character dies ( especially when its a character everyone has really come to love, even more than the main character itself) it really hits hard.

Almost all the main characters in my writings are "bad guys". Who you want dying has less to do with who is the bad guy, but rather what will have the greatest impact on the story.

I think it depends on the growth of the characters. Example: most bad guys are static characters, in which they have very little personal growth. They just stay bad. If you wanted that character to grow and change then a self sacrifice would be good. But if there is little to no growth for the bad guy, a self sacrifice wouldn't make sense and a death of a main character would.

All depends on who grows the most, the main characters, or the baddy.

In this case, it would be the good guy.

The good guy it is! Let the bonfire of self sacrifice be lit!

This too depends entirely on the story. For example, because in most of my stories there are barely ever any "good guys", the ambiguity of morality (or should I say the relativity of it) becomes the main focus. The characters don't stay static, neither do they 'become more good'. Only the reasoning being their actions become clarified. It all depends on the story.

hmm that's a good point. I was also thinking about how law or order fits into it, as well as personal morals.
I guess if a person was evil, but followed a certain rule of conduct a self sacrifice would make sense.
But that brings up the point of what kind of morals do you want in your story? Or perhaps what laws and rules are in place? If you followed the basic morals (don't kill, don't steal, etc) then one scenario would happen. If you followed morals, laws, rules that are in certain Role Plays (like D&D) then you would have Lawful evil, Chaotic evil, Neutral, Chaotic good, and Lawful good.
Everything just gets so complicated.

Also it depends on the growth the writer feels his character has made. Even if it takes a little longer to get to the eventual point the writer feels. This usually is the right point to finish the story. Weight your decision on how you the writer feels his baddie has grown or not grown or whether our lead act is the one to end in death.

Beings I'm a more tragic or twisted ending kind of guy I would say the main character dying, I'm actually using that for my one story except everyone dies.

i think one of the mains' should die. a bad guy just isnt bad if he sacrifices himself to save everyone, unless you want the bad guy to reform or become good or something like that. then if you want to, you can have the bad guy killed off somehow. thats just my idea though.
