it's just a stereotype. here's the thing, most really famous floutists are male. or at least the ones i've heard of.
now, i've met... 4 gay guys recently. one doesn't count cuz he's not in band, but two of them did play the flute. but the other one played the baritone. and i know a straight guy who plays the flute. it's just a stupid stereotype. you shouldn't really care about it. just prove it wrong.

Not necessarily. But I will say that when it comes to moving on to college and majoring in flute... about 75% of the males are either gay or really feminine in nature (these are just my observations from my own school).

No, of course not. In fact, I look up to the male flutists -- most of the times, they're better than the females. >_> Also, the best flutists in the world are males.

Ya know, it DOES take a real man to play flute. Well said. Although there aren't any guys on flute in our band...maybe I should play flute! Hmm, no. But honestly, a straight guy could play flute as easily as a gay guy. And! Whoever said that the best flutists in the world are guys, that's kind of true too. Not to be sexist. But--Ian Anderson!

Uh, Jethro Tull? He's a famous flute-rock artist. He's pretty darn amazing.
Also, because the flute is such an individual instrument, everyone band director is required to learn it in college.
If gay meant playing the flute made someone homosexual, I think we'd have a lot of gay band directors.
My band director is perfectly male, and is pretty dang awesome at flute himself.

Kirei_chan We didn't have a boy playing flute, we had a manflute. And he was the only one that could flutter tongue. He was not gay in the least. seriously? only one can flutter tongue? hah. that's one of the most fun things to do on the flute!

I've known 3 guys total that played flute. One was really bad, the other quit after getting his one year of performing art credit, and the last one is...kinda dumb and happens to sit behind me. No one's really sure how he plays so well, considering that he had quit flute for well over a year or two before coming back to play for Sophomore year. Even I can't play flute that well during pep band - and I've been doing that for two years after switching to oboe.
Bottom line: None of them were gay. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with instrument choice.
