Alright, one of the big things going here is that Aeris wants to know the real Cloud. Many Cleris say that this means she recognized that there was another Cloud underneath the totally messed up Zack impostor one. I will give them that, but wouldn't that mean that she DIDN'T know the real Cloud, and therefore wasn't in love with Cloud but instead was in love with the Cloud that thought he was Zack?
I, personally, see this scene as more proof toward Zeris than Cleris. It makes me think that Aeris was confused, and wanted to know if it was really Cloud that she was falling for, or if it was the part of Cloud that reminded her of Zack.
Also, this is a very one sided "Cleris Proof" as Cloud doesn't really react at all to this. He acts like a dumbass and doesn't get the implied meanings. With Tifa's date scene, he seems interested, at least a little, in what she has to say.

I think it's funny that it's optional. Because without getting Aeris in the date scene, you don't know that she wants to know the real Cloud and that might make the plot a little confusing? XD I think that's why Aeris is the default date, because it helps out the plot. It's true, the creators usually refer to the Cloud and Aeris date scene, even though it's optional. A lot of Clerises use it as proof though, and then say that the Highwind scene for Cloti is optional because it has "low" affection scenes possible. However, you see the creators refer ONLY to the high affection option. . . So is it really optional? I think the Highwind scenes options are different than the date scene options. In the date scene you can get different characters. For the Highwind, it HAS to be Tifa. And frankly, Cloud isn't even mean to her in the low affection scenes.

In every date scene Cloud is forced into it, and never whole-heartedly agrees with anyone even if you chose to accept the offer. He will get pushed out the door, and EVERY time his response will simply be "Hey..."

Tifa almost confesses her love for Cloud on the gondola ride, and Cloud is curious to know what she was going to say. But with Aeris, all it is is her telling him she wants to know the real him.
PLOT development, no?

Of course Aerith was in love with the Cloud she thought was Zack. She only longed to know the true one and all she saw through was that Cloud was not himself. That doesn't mean she knew the real him, that means she recognized he was one messed up mo-fo and she wished she knew what he was like when he wasn't almost exactly like her boyfriend.
