Everyone says their first year sucked so hard, but my first year of playing bass was just fine. I would compare it more closely to learning to swim. You start out getting your toes wet, then start wading about in the shallows and splashing playfully around, and then when you find the confidence, you gradually paddle out into the deep end and start to really do it. I'm not quite at the deep end yet, but I'm tip-toeing my way there smile

My first year was pretty frustrating...i remember wanting to be like Michael Angelo Batio, and Jason Becker...it was funny though cause my skills kept on increasing as my hair kept on growing lol But once i relised it was all about Practice and having the passion for music, I no longer wanted to be like anybody else. I wanted to make myself somebody big in music...
maybe someday...

My first year was pretty good. I had fun learning all the chords and techniques and whatnot.

I recall sleepless nights and true, honest-to-goodness, bleeding fingers. It was hell in six strings, sometimes five when E just snaps. I worked myself to the bone, just burning through songbooks like no tomorrow, watching music videos to try to figure out what chord Hendrix was playing, often times being told to, as I quote, "Shut the ******** up and sleep God dammit, it's 2 in the morning!"

After that year and six months after, it became less hectic and more routine. One thing I regret not trying to learn that year: Learning songs by ear, which I still can't do very well.
