I've been searching for good petticoats lately and I've been wondering about the "correct" amount of yardage. Or is it mostly a matter of opinion?
What do you guys think? 20yd? 30yd? 40yd? Please let me know. I just want some perspective ^^

Most square dancing petticoats are 60, which gives you the way wrong shape.
It honestly depends on your personal proportions, though. The petticoat I made for myself [which was ugly as sin but worked fairly well] was made with this tutorial:
It explains how to measure out what you'll need for your personal piece.

Hmm, when I make petticoats, I go 3 times the waist measurements, with a layer of nylon mesh. I call it "the fail proof Poof' petti. Its also very nice to wear by itself ;D

I my own and albeit ugly, it works wonderfully. I made a regular skirt and just sewed rows of tulle on it until it was poofy enough. My waist is about 33'' and I used 7 yards of tulle. Tulle is hella cheap, though. I got it at Walmart for about $1/yard.

Sorry, but someone will have to explain this to me better. 20 to 40 yards of fabric?

One could attempt that... but I think I personally do not have a skirt that would fit over that. Even the double circle would have an issue. Maybe it would work with the right fabric. If you make one that big, please take pictures. 3nodding
