Just because you don't use a reference on something doesn't mean it is worse off than the rest.
I think what really catches people on the first one is the amount of detail, it has the most compared to the rest. And besides that, the coloring gives shading to it while the others are more solidly done.
And the amount of time you spent on it shows your amount of effort.
