I like that they have subtitled Spanish. I don't speak Spanish, but if you've ever lived in Miami or any state with a large Hispanic population, you hear it spoken. It's part of the culture of a place. You hear languages you don't speak, and you don't understand it. We don't get subtitles because the books are from Dexter's point of view, and he doesn't understand it. In the show they keep it like the book, and also true to life. In life there aren't subtitles to tell you what people are saying.

Why don't Dexter and Deb understand it. Well Dexter seemed to speak a little Spanish, but honestly, I have friends who took Spanish in High school and wouldn't be able to understand a conversation in rapid fire Spanish spoken by native speakers. Also, living in area where lots of people speak Spanish doesn't mean you do. I for one don't, I took Latin in highschool and I'm taking French in College, even though the majority of the population of my state is Hispanic, and we have lots of emigrants who speak Spanish, even the road signs have Spanish as well as English, but I don't speak Spanish.

It would be useful, but I just don't think I'd ever study it long enough to be fluent, and I liked Latin because I like classics, and I like French because I really like French literature, and even though I'll get to that level, at least I can say I've studied the language.

So, in sum. In real life some people speak Spanish, and some people don't.
