A low hum resonated through his throat, so deep that only the nearest of crawly creatures could feel and hear. Oddly enough, that was pretty much the only sound he made - for such a big, brawny male, he made surprisingly little noise. Almost none, actually.
Baldev lived - for the most part - in these creepy woods. Though his orange coat did not exactly blend in, the black stripes in his fur and his uncanny ability to take advantage of any shadow made him all but invisible...until that final moment. He was a predator, a stealthy one at that. Not necessarily an evil one - he didn't kill any more than his stomach demanded. However, he didn't apologize for killing, either.
This particular excursion had nothing to do with food.
He was actually just taking a leisurely stroll, alone, in that silence that he was so good at maintaining. The occasional song of birds high up in the canopy made him smile a little, brightened that stoic mood he so often kept. It was odd that he had yet to run across any other living thing bigger than a squirrel-like creature. Maybe they had fled - he was rather intimidating, with his large size and battle-ready muscles....but if you spoke to him, that calmer, passive side came through. Unless he got mad. That wasn't pretty.
Sighing, he paused, rolling his neck to ease tired muscles. At least it was a nice day.

Dipping her muzzle she adjusted her paw over the small carcass and with a twist of her head, tore another lump of meat free. Swallowing it swiftly she bent to repeat the move. She was new here, having migrated from the lands to the south. Her journey had been hard and troubled. A single loan female, fairly small in appearance, appeared to be easy prey to the many lone males slinking about on the edges of the pack lands. It didn't matter how many she fought and beat, there were always more who thought themselves stronger or faster. And who assumed she would be theirs... Snorting she attacked her meal again. She had come to this dark place, the place others sought to avoid, in order to escape those others. Maybe here, she would have peace for a time. Distracted by her thoughts and assuming the forest was relatively empty of others like herself, she failed to be as alert as usual and simply concentrated on cleaning the small body of her current prey. The faint crunching and tearing noises filtering through the shadows that surrounded her.

Baldev's nose sniffed the air as a new scent wafted into recognition. Hmmm...smelled like meat. And another of his kind? Possibly female, though the overpowering aroma of fresh meat made that hard to discern for sure. It was already decided that he would follow, but how close would he get? Would he wait until the smell of meat was gone? He really feel like getting in a fight with someone who thought he was there to take their meat, but...eh. Maybe if it was female, it would cut him some slack.
Or give him more hell than a male would. Yeesh.
He began padding at a slow trot in the direction of the scent's origin, eyes half-closed in a a lazy fashion. The tiger-like male was in no hurry to get where he was going, obviously - if they moved on before he got there, fine. If not...that was ok too.

The female was a delicate eater, and since she thought she was alone, she was in no hurry to finish the first fresh meal she had acquired in some days. The scent of the meat and blood blocked her nose to others and she didn't scent anything that would have tipped her off to another approaching.
Dipping her head she licked at a splintered bone, working at the end with her rough tongue to tease the marrow free. A rare treat it was, to have time on her paws. Yes, she liked it here, the quietness, the lack of others seeking to hunt or claim her..
Smiling faintly she nipped at the meat, tearing off another strip to swallow contentedly.

Well well well, what a rare treat!
Baldev sat slowly upon his haunches, nearly silent in the movement, as he watched the female eat. He sat way back in the brush, hidden by the cover of leaves and shadow and the camouflage his stripes allowed. His golden eyes gleamed with fascination as he watched her, that femme that was striped just as he was. The hue among it was different - his a rust-tinted orange and hers a more bluish-grey, but...this was the first time he had ever seen another with stripes like his. Where did she come from? Why was she here? Well, this was no longer a situation that he was barely interested in.
And was she really going to take THIS long eating?
A deep rumble escaped his throat, one of amusement and annoyance put together. Females took so long eating. He couldn't gobble his food fast enough!

Gnawing on the end of the thigh bone, Khanti was unaware still of the male lurking some way off. The small carcass was nearly stripped, the tiger-stripped female crunching at the bones contentedly. Suddenly the faint rumble from the shadows to one side reached the females blue-grey ears. Sleek body tensed, graceful head whipping round to stare into the bushes where the sound came from, pale yellow eyes seeming to pierce directly through the shadows to the hidden male.
With a bone still caught tight in her jaw she rose to her paws, twin tails curling behind her restlessly. Was it something dangerous out there? She had heard the rumours of wolf-eating beasts in these woods but hadn't found anything on her first foray. Yet.. something was over there... the question was, was it predator or pray?

Ah, so he had been found....well, so much for secrecy.
"Please..I mean you no harm." he stated in that raspy bass tone, slowly emerging from the shadows. His posture was purely defensive, ready to react should she strike. He hoped she wouldn't - the male only wished to know why she had the same markings as he, only in a different color. Maybe she would wonder the same thing. Maybe that would help his case.
"I am Baldev," he stated, nodding slightly in greeting. "I smelled your kill on the wind, so I investigated....and happened to find someone who looked remotely like me. I was intrigued, so I watched you. That is all."

Dark ears swept back in a defensive posture as the deep voice rumbled from behind the bush. The blueish-grey female stepped back, slim body held tight and wary as the large burning ember-hued male rose up out of the shadows like some kind of demonic apperition. How someone so large could hide so easily was baffling, but she had to give him credit for his obvious skill.
Still, he had spoken, rather than attacked her. Letting her tight muscles relax she kept her pale eyes on the stranger as she slowly lowered her head, dropping the bone delicately to the ground at her paws. The least she could do was reply after all..
"I was not aware that there were others near here... my appolagies." She replied, her voice was soft and light, as graceful as her sleek shadow-hued body. "My name is Khanti." She added in return, pale amber gaze moving over the male, assesing the potential danger he could pose. Though for the moment she could sence no ill-will or violence in him.
Slender ears flicked forwards, narrow muzzle lifting slightly. "They call me shadow-touched.." She murmured softly, as if feeling the questioning look in his vivid, burning gaze.

He was visibly pleased that she did not bolt or attack, and decided to sit instead of approach further. Didn't want to push his luck, after all. The male was intrigued by her - pretty little thing, but obviously smart enough to be wary of him and still not run. He, however, was also smart - he wouldn't relax completely so soon. She was, after all, still a stranger.
"It is quite alright, no need to apologize." he rumbled, cocking his head a little. "Shadow touched? Indeed. As I said, I have never seen another like myself....how long have you been here? In these woods?"

The shifting of slender paws over the leaf litter proved that the male had chosen wisely in staying where he was. The female was, by necessity, cautious of others, especially of males that were far larger than herself.
Her twin tails curled behind her, slowly calming as she watched the male, pale eyes attentive and aware. "Not long, I am new in the area..." She replied, soft voice dipping with a barely audible growl rumbling in the back of her throat. Slender but deadly fangs partly visible as she added. "I have been travailing." By her tone it was clear that it hadn't been a particularly pleasant or welcome choice of lifestyle.
Catching herself she looked back at the stranger, narrow muzzle once again smooth as graceful ears flicked forwards. "You are the first like myself I have met also.." She finally admitted, studying the male with some curiosity now, head lifting.

He remained motionless, a large, striped boulder with glassy eyes. Baldev looked almost a little disinterested in her comments on travels. That was just how he looked, though - within his mind, he worked effortlessly to figure out whether that growl was directed at him, or at the situation. Probably the situation, though....females were confusing. He was not stupid by any means, but still. He blamed it on the fact that he was a male, and females were terribly cryptic.
After a moment of somewhat uncomfortable silence, he responded. "Mmmm...I suspect it was not a kind journey, by your tone. Either that or I have offended you," he commented, a little bit of humor behind his voice. "Which lands do you hail from?"
