User ImageExhausted from the recent changes, shocks, and traumas, Arc threw himself across his bed. The jouncing motion made him grimace, as it shifted the skin uncomfortably along his neck. He mentally reached to cradle the cold lump of what had been Rairne. Already it was smaller, lesser, than it had earlier this long, long day. Rolling to his back, he draped one arm across his eyes, awash with what might possibly be a leftover surge of adolescent hormones, causing his emotions to swing dramatically. Whether or not it was, he didn't care.

He was busy feeling worse than useless. How had he managed to get himself used by the Enemy as a means of escape? The numbers mocked him with the unlikely odds of him being the tool amongst so many others present. Miserable, he groaned and rolled to his side, burying both hands in his unkempt brown hair. Logic might insist that it hadn't been his fault, but he could not banish the stinging sense of guilt that prevaded his mind constantly. Why had he let her use him that way? Blatently he ignored his hoarse throat that was evidence that he had had no choice in the matter. He should have DONE something! If only he'd been stronger! If only he'd thought quicker! If only he'd been newly reborn in some muscle-bound bodybuilder! But no, he'd chosen a not-so-innocent child instead. A handicapped child that had won his heart.

Perhaps a friendly voice, speaking soothing platititudes and bolstering reassurances could have snapped him out of it, but instead he was left with the soul-less remains of his host's conciousness and an echoingly empty room. Even his new servant was absent, apparently having gotten caught on the other side of that terrifying wall of nothingness. At least his room bore no windows to further depress him with evidence of their Enemy's powers. Agonized and left with nothing to occupy his mind, he writhed on the bed, feeling sorry for himself.

So caught up in his own trials and moanings, the godling hadn't noticed that his room was occupied by another as well. Glowing eyes peered from behind a large vase, an eerie glow brightening the shadow it hid in. He also missed the soft clacking of a beak and the scrabble of claws. He did not miss, however, the chirrup.

Startled, he sat bolt upright, which caused a wave of dizziness. Man, I really need to rest, he thought, bracing one hand against his temple. Blinking away the fuzziness that edged his sight, he narrowed his eyes towards the dresser. Something bright had ducked behind the large vase there, but within the grey of the shadow was a neon green glow. Intrigued despite his weariness, he moved to the edge of the bed, folding his legs beneath him. He clucked his tongue softly, settling himself to be still so he could coax whatever it was out.

Hesitantly, a birdlike head peered around the curved surface of the vessel, peering at him warily with one eye. Arctang continued making soothing sounds, encouraging the small creature out. What emerged was unusually feathered, with no wings. Large ears swept up and back, and longer tailfeathers flipped behind small hindquarters that bore a mark. The forelegs were clearly meant to resemble a bird's legs, but one was dangling loosely.

Somewhat aware of the fortuitousness of this distraction, he began to murmur quietly to the small creature. "Well aren't you just the tangent I needed? Come here, let me see that leg of yours." The words rasped in his throat, though he spoke softly, but he ignored the pain and held out a hand, big enough for the small thing to hop onto without much trouble. The glowing avian eyed him, then his hand, with a healthy amount of suspicion. However, it appared to come to a conclusion, for it suddenly gave a leap, sprawling into his hand.

Arc quickly steadied the fluffball with his other hand, drawing it close and petting it gently behind the head and beneath its ears. The small thing churred pleasantly. Having steadied it, he lifted it up so he could get a look at the injured leg. "Hmm, you seem to have done a doozy of a break there." He frowned uncertainly as he gently touched it to discover the extent of the damage. A sharp bite with a small beak made him jerk back, biting back a yelp. "That clearly doesn't feel good. Here, let me bind that up."

He settled the small bird-like critter on one of the pillows before digging through some drawers. Some thoughtful soul had left handkerchiefs in one nightstand, but he practically could bundle the entire neon body up in it. He made short work of it, tearing off a strip of suitable size. Keeping one eye on that swift beak, he cradled the useless limb in the bandage and tied it behind its back. "There now, my little Tangent, what do you say we rest from our labors, eh?" Tangent explored his bandage and moved in a circle experimentally before settled down with an apparently content chirrup. Nodding his satisfaction, Arc sprawled once more, his head on the neighboring pillow. "I think we both deserve a bit of rest and relaxation for a bit," he murmured to his new companion.

He was very nearly already asleep, but was aware enough to feel Tangent move over to his pillow and then nestle down in his thick hair, churring contentedly. It was with a smile that he finally drifted off into dream.
