In attempting to make tin can flowers as found on HGTV's website
I came up with something a bit more sophisticated. I'm very proud of what I got out of it and I'll upload an image when I can.
For now visualize sort of a calligraphic design of whirls, swirls and hearts with a spring shape attached to one of the swirls to add three dimensional interest.
supplies used
.
tin can top
old pair of scissors
superglue
tweezers
a few paper towels
instructions
.
carefully remove the tin can top with a can opener, with the old pair of scissors cuts off and jagged edges. Wash off any foodstuffs and go to your work area.
Start trimming very thin lines off the edge of the tin, if it curls - great! It's a lot harder to create those whirls than it is to unravel them. I had several 'strands'
to work with before piecing them together. Play with them a bit until you get a design that is pleasing to you then start gluing them.
Use an itty bitty droplet to bond the pieces together and have the paper towel handy to blot excess off.
You do not want a big blob of glue to take away from the visual appeal.
I mostly used my fingers to hold the more delicate bits together and clamped them with tweezers a bit later to ensure the bond.
This way can get messy and runs the risk of gluing your fingers together but it worked best and was less frustrating than using the tweezers the entire time as the metal strands tend to want to stick to the blasted tweezers.
Due to the fact that one would be working with potentially sharp - small bits of metal as well as superglue I can not recommend this project for younger crafty types. Certainly not for children. That said I'm especially clumsy and only stuck myself once of twice, which is considerably less than I do while hand sewing.
