Journal Entry (5)

This evening, I met my friend, Darby, at the Wild Rose Tavern. She had some news to share and we decided to make a dinner of it. The egg was sitting on its bag on the table between us. Of course, she heard all about how I got it and what I’d exposed it to so far. We made guesses about what was happening with the other eggs.

Some older boys were getting rowdy in an argument about whose horse was faster. One stood up and challenged the other to a horse race. Well, the mistake was in standing up. The other one jumped up and took a swing at the first one. After that they were all over the place, throwing punches and falling over tables and chairs. One of them crashed into me and the mug of ale in my hand went flying. It bounced on the table and spilled ale all over my egg. I was so upset. I’m sure it did the egg no harm, but the bag was going to need a long soak in sweet salts to get the ale smell out of it.

My friend was laughing so hard she almost fell off the bench. She said my dragon was going to be stealing away to visit taverns when it grew up because I gave it a taste of ale before it was out of the egg. I told her to not even suggest such a thing. I dried off the bag the best I could and the barkeep threw the lads out in the street to continue their ‘discussion’. We were able to finish our meal quietly after that.

Research Center Report
Today I took the egg to the Wild Rose Tavern for dinner. The evening's events exposed the egg to a bar fight and being splashed with ale. Seriously, I am taking good care of the egg.

Day Three-Five

Let’s see… for the past few days, I’ve been camping out in the woods with my egg. I’ve been careful about the exposure though. I’ve already got two forest affinities and I’d be really disappointed to end up with another… anyway, exposures for the days.

I only opened up the box at night, so it was exposed to the night and shadows. A few dead leaves fell in the box, unfortunately. I took them out quickly, so I hope I didn’t ruin anything… e_e;; Anyway, to take up the time I sang a few songs to it too. I like singing. It makes me happy, although I’m sure Vlasia would laugh at me. Although, making her laugh is fun too.

Right, right. I digress.

On the last night---the night I’m writing this---I finally found foxfire. It wasn’t much, just a few mysterious wisps of smoke-like fire. It was gorgeous, however little it was, as it writhed up in the air, like plumes of blue smoke. I held the egg and showed it the foxfire---or showed the foxfire the egg, as the case may be---until it dissipated. Then I put the egg carefully back in its box once more.

Exposures:

Darkness, dead leaves, my singing, and foxfire.

Journal Entry--2

Today I took the egg and dragons on a picnic, but that proved to be a bad idea. It was overcast and windy, ants got into the fruit salad, and Abellio spirited the mystery egg away while I wasn't paying attention and attempted to bury it amongst a bed of flowers.

It started to rain as we were walking home and I hadn't brought an umbrella, so the poor little egg got rained on, as well. I do hope the dragon inside of it doesn't hatch traumatized, though I certainly couldn't blame it if it did.

Have set the egg among the assorted bones I use for my experiments and potions. Grey shell makes an odd contrast. Rather macabre, really. However, worth trying. Placed a line of finely powdered bone around the egg as well. Used the batch of powder that came out discolored; suspect that a small amount of iron crept into the mix. Nevertheless, too expensive to use best and purest only.

Day 6-10

It wasn’t easy, but, with Vlasia’s help, I managed to bribe a captain to allow me on board his ship. He was most reluctant about my little dragons, but I proved just how useful they could be. Apparently, this particular captain had a lot of trouble with seaweed and the like wrapping itself around his rudders. I think I took care of that problem, so I managed to buy myself passage onto his ship. The trickiest part was asking him to continue sailing in a storm.

Yeah… that probably wasn’t my smartest idea ever. Still, it was worth it. My dragons were busy cowering in my cabin. Everywhere, the wind whipped at the sails, as if it was urging the sea to make bigger waves and toss our little craft even higher. It was a miracle that I managed to keep a grip on my egg at all. Probably not the safest… but, every scientific venture must have some degree of danger. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be new, right?

Yeah, that probably needs some work. Anyway, while the storm was raging at its worst, the mast’s tip began glowing, as if on fire. That was St. Elmo’s Fire, a strange blue-violet glow. But, as I stared at it, something even rarer came into existence…

Ball lightning. Although the two are commonly confused, they are actually quite different phenomena; ball lightning is, I believe, just another type of lightning. St. Elmo’s Fire is far more… mysterious. This ‘ball lightning’, instead of lasting for only a split second, managed to float around for several seconds. It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen.

Exposures:
Storm, St. Elmo’s Fire, ball lightning

Journal Entry--3

Exposure to the elements during our failed picnic has left me with a cold; spent most of the day in bed. Found egg missing when I awoke, spent several hours looking for it only to find it among Fragment's horde of glittering gemstones. Attempted to wash the egg free of gem-dust, but sneezed and accidentally dropped the egg in the water. Quickly reclaimed it, and am now going back to sleep. Note to self: keep egg with me, lock dragons out of my room.

Dear Journal,

The egg was dipped, for a very brief second, in liquid mercury. Had to call a favor in for that one.

For the sake of this experiment, I have picked up something I almost wish never to touch again - my violin. I opened the crystal box, set it on a chair in front of me, and sat in front of it with that horribly beautiful instrument and played. Of course, this is no where along the lines of what I have been exposing it to. Rock and mineral and liquid metal are a far cry from beautiful string music...and velvet and satin. However, I had the oddest urge to play, and so I played for my little experiment. I quite enjoyed it, and I figure I may continue enjoying it as long as my mother does not find out - I absolutely despise only doing things because I have to.

So far: Crimson Satin and Velvet, crystal, ruby, granite, liquid silver, violin music

Journal Entry--4

Today I did not drop, lose, or do anything that might harm the egg in any way. It sat amongst inkwells and large feathered quills as I caught up on my other research. The day was sunny, and rainbows played over the egg, my desk, and the feathers through some crystals I had hung up over the window for that very purpose. I accidentally dripped a few drops of ink on it, but cleaned it immediately although I suppose it doesn't matter if the shell gets stained. The dragon within will survive.

Dear Journal,

The egg has set amongst diamonds and mirrors for the past few hours, a light shining above that casts the most spectacular display of refractory light. Besides that, these are the things the egg has been exposed to - silence, and diamonds.

So far: Crimson Satin and Velvet, Crystal, Ruby, Granite, Liquid Silver, Violin Music, Silence, Diamonds
